Chapter 12 - Chapter 12 : What Remains of Damon Salvatore(part-II)

The mist moved.

It did not know where it was going.

It did not even understand what going meant.

There was no destination in its mind. No thought. No memory. No purpose beyond the primitive hunger that continued to pull it forward.

Something was drawing it onward.

A presence.

Warm.

Alive.

Different.

The mist followed.

It passed between the trees without disturbing the branches, slipping through the darkness like smoke carried by a wind that did not exist. It had no eyes, yet somehow it perceived the world around it. Shapes. Movement. Heat. Life.

And then it found them.

Six figures were moving through the forest.

Men and women.

They walked with the quiet confidence of people accustomed to dangerous places. Their eyes constantly swept across the trees, the ground, the surrounding darkness.

They were searching.

Five of them clearly did not know what they were looking for.

The sixth did.

He walked at the front.

Older than the others in appearance, perhaps, though there was something about him that made age difficult to judge. His movements were controlled, deliberate. Every few steps, his gaze returned to the same places, as if he were following traces invisible to everyone else.

The others followed because they trusted him.

The mist followed because something inside it had decided they were worth consuming.

One of the figures suddenly stopped.

His head turned toward the darkness.

He whispered something.

The sound was unlike any language Damon had ever heard.

The words were short and harsh, carrying strange combinations of sounds that felt almost unnatural to his ears.

The leader immediately raised one hand.

Everyone stopped.

For a moment, nothing moved.

Then the mist emerged from between the trees.

It did not attack like an animal.

It simply spread.

A portion of the darkness detached from the main mass and rolled forward, slipping across the ground before rising toward the nearest figure.

The man turned.

Too late.

The mist entered through his mouth and nose.

His entire body jerked.

His eyes widened.

For the first time since it had awakened, the mist encountered resistance.

Not physical resistance.

Something else.

A force reached into it.

The leader spoke.

The strange language echoed through the forest, each syllable precise and deliberate.

Symbols of pale light appeared around the infected man.

The mist recoiled.

It had never experienced anything like this.

It had consumed blood.

It had consumed life.

It had passed through bodies as easily as smoke passed through an open window.

But this—

This was different.

Something was trying to pull it out.

The mist resisted instinctively.

The pressure increased.

The man's body suddenly lifted several inches from the ground, his arms hanging uselessly at his sides as his mouth opened in a silent scream.

The leader's hand tightened.

The symbols surrounding the man brightened.

And then the mist was ripped from him.

It was violently expelled from his body, torn apart for an instant before reforming several meters away.

For the first time, the mist felt something.

Shock.

It had no understanding of pain.

No understanding of fear.

But this was close.

Something had reached into its existence and forced it to move against its will.

The mist contracted instinctively, becoming denser.

The man collapsed to his knees.

He coughed violently, trembling as he tried to recover.

The leader studied the black mass in silence.

His expression remained calm, but his eyes had changed.

He was no longer simply investigating.

He was observing a phenomenon.

One of the others spoke in the same unfamiliar language.

Another answered.

The leader listened without taking his eyes from the mist.

None of them seemed to understand exactly what they were dealing with.

Neither did the mist.

But it had learned something.

That light could hurt it.

That force could remove it.

That entering a body did not necessarily mean it could remain there.

Information.

Primitive, incomplete information.

But information nonetheless.

The mist moved again.

This time, it did not attack the same way.

It divided.

A larger portion remained in front of the group, drifting slowly between the trees.

A smaller fragment peeled away from it and vanished behind the others.

The leader did not notice.

His attention remained fixed on the man he had just saved.

He began another incantation.

The strange words flowed faster this time.

Symbols appeared around his hands.

The others immediately recognized what he was preparing.

One of them turned toward him and spoke sharply.

The leader answered without looking at them.

His expression remained focused.

Then the smaller fragment struck.

It entered another member of the group from behind.

The woman froze.

Her eyes widened.

Her body trembled once.

Then the mist began to consume her.

The leader stopped.

He turned.

Too late.

The woman collapsed.

The others reacted immediately.

Several of them shouted in the strange language and raised their hands.

The mist withdrew from the woman's body for an instant, only to surge back inside.

It had remembered.

The first time, it had been forced out.

It would not allow that to happen again.

The leader extended one hand.

The same symbols appeared.

The woman screamed.

The mist reacted.

Its structure changed.

It compressed itself inside her body, spreading through her faster than before, dividing into smaller portions that clung to different parts of her existence.

The extraction began.

A portion of the mist was pulled free.

But another remained.

The leader's expression hardened.

He changed the spell.

The symbols around the woman multiplied.

The pressure intensified.

The mist resisted with everything it had.

For several seconds, neither side moved.

Then the leader forced it out.

The black mass erupted from the woman's body and scattered through the air like smoke caught in a violent current.

The woman fell.

She did not move.

Silence descended upon the forest.

The leader stared at her body.

One of the others approached cautiously and said something in that ancient, unfamiliar language.

No answer came.

Another spoke.

Still nothing.

The leader's gaze slowly shifted toward the mist.

It floated several meters away.

Formless.

Silent.

Faceless.

And yet somehow, the leader had the distinct impression that it was watching him.

The creature had adapted.

That was what disturbed him most.

Not its strength.

Not its hunger.

Its ability to learn.

He looked back at the dead woman.

Then toward the black mass.

His voice finally broke the silence.

This time, he spoke in english.

Almost absent-mindedly.

"I suppose this is the anomaly responsible for making the ley lines shudder…"

Nobody answered.

The leader did not elaborate.

Neither did his companions.

They simply understood that whatever they had been searching for, they had found something far more complicated than expected.

The mist drifted closer.

The group immediately prepared themselves.

Three of them raised their hands.

The strange language returned.

The forest filled with unfamiliar words.

The mist moved.

A wave of black smoke surged toward them.

The first spell struck.

The mist was thrown sideways.

It did not hit the ground.

There was nothing solid enough for it to collide with.

Instead, its form dispersed violently, spreading into thin strands of black vapor before gathering itself again several meters away.

It returned.

Another spell.

The mist scattered once more.

It reformed.

Again.

Another attack.

Another spell.

Every time they pushed it away, it came back.

It did not understand tactics.

It did not understand strategy.

But it learned from every encounter.

The shape of their magic.

The timing of their attacks.

The sensation of being pushed.

The sensation of being contained.

Everything became part of it.

The leader continued preparing his spell.

His companions noticed.

One of them spoke urgently.

The leader ignored him.

Another shouted something.

Still nothing.

The spell was growing.

The air itself seemed heavier around him.

Symbols began appearing across the space behind his body, one after another, forming enormous patterns that overlapped without touching.

The others slowly backed away.

They knew what he was preparing.

The mist did not.

But it sensed danger.

It surged forward.

Three members of the group reacted simultaneously.

Their spells collided with the advancing darkness.

The mist dispersed.

It reformed.

It attacked again.

The same thing happened.

Again.

And again.

The leader remained completely focused.

Blood slowly appeared beneath his nose.

His hands trembled.

His breathing became heavier.

Whatever he was preparing was consuming an enormous amount of energy.

One of his companions looked at him.

He spoke.

The leader answered in the strange language.

The companion hesitated.

Then stepped back.

The mist continued attacking.

It was getting closer.

The defensive spells pushed it away, but the creature adapted faster with every attempt.

It began slipping around the edges of the attacks.

It separated itself into smaller fragments.

Some were destroyed.

Others survived.

It was learning how to exist around their magic.

The leader finally opened his eyes.

Everything stopped.

The wind.

The movement of the trees.

Even the mist seemed to hesitate.

The leader raised both hands.

His companions immediately retreated.

One of them whispered something.

Another followed.

The leader did not respond.

He spoke a long sequence of words in that incomprehensible language.

The symbols surrounding him ignited.

Space itself seemed to bend.

Not break.

Not tear.

Bend.

The mist suddenly froze.

Something had locked onto it.

It tried to disperse.

Nothing happened.

It tried to move.

Nothing.

For the first time, something resembling fear passed through its primitive consciousness.

It spread itself desperately.

Thin strands reached toward the trees.

The ground.

The air.

Anything.

Something pulled harder.

The mist began to stretch.

It did not feel pain.

Not in the way a human would.

It felt something worse.

Its existence was being forced apart.

The sound began slowly.

A low vibration.

Then another.

Then a shriek.

The mist had no voice.

Yet the forest screamed with it.

The black mass began splitting into countless fragments.

The sound grew louder.

Sharper.

More horrible.

As though something was being torn apart at a level deeper than flesh.

The companions of the leader stepped back.

Even they looked unsettled.

The leader's body shook.

Blood flowed from his nose.

Then from the corner of his mouth.

Still, he continued.

The mist tried to escape.

It could not.

It stretched farther.

Thinner.

Smaller.

The sound became unbearable.

Then—

Everything vanished.

The mist disappeared.

No smoke remained.

No trace.

Nothing.

The forest fell silent.

The leader lowered his hands.

His body swayed.

One of his companions hurried toward him and spoke in the strange language.

The leader did not answer.

He stared at the empty space where the creature had been.

After several seconds, he finally whispered in French.

"…Gone."

But even he did not sound convinced.

He had never encountered anything like that.

Neither had any of them.

The spell had succeeded.

Whatever that thing had been, it was no longer in their world.

At least, that was what they believed.

The leader looked toward the bodies of their fallen companions.

His expression hardened.

He raised one hand.

Golden symbols appeared beneath their feet.

The remaining members gathered around him.

For a moment, the forest was illuminated by the strange golden light.

Then the symbols flared.

And all of them disappeared.

The forest was empty once again.

Only the bodies remained.

And somewhere beyond the reach of their senses—

Something else had happened.

Something the group could not possibly have known.

The mist had not been destroyed.

It had been displaced.

Thrown beyond their reach.

Beyond their understanding.

Beyond the distance they could perceive.

And somewhere—

Very far away—

The mist still existed, now in the form of a man who looked as though he had survived the worst thing imaginable.

Damon Salvatore lay upon the cold stone of a forgotten rooftop, staring into the magnificence of the stars while a silent tear slowly traced the side of his face.
