Chapter 139 - Unplanned

Separation worked.

On paper.

In meetings.

In schedules.

But not in reality.

Because reality didn't follow structure.

It happened during a joint committee review.

Unplanned.

Unavoidable.

The academic board and policy committee had overlapping approvals.

Which meant—

Same room.

Same table.

Again.

Anaya walked in first.

File in hand. Expression neutral.

She didn't react when she saw him already there.

Didn't pause.

Just took her seat.

Across the table.

Like nothing had changed.

Like everything had.

The other members filled the room slowly.

Conversations started.

Papers shuffled.

The meeting began.

"This proposal requires joint approval," one of the committee members said.

Anaya nodded.

"Proceed."

He picked up the file.

Read it once.

Then—

"This clause doesn't align with academic enforcement."

Her pen stopped mid-note.

Of course.

That tone.

That precision.

That—

Correction.

She looked up.

"It aligns with policy structure."

"It conflicts with implementation."

"It strengthens accountability."

"It complicates execution."

Silence.

The room stilled slightly.

Because this—

This hadn't happened in days.

Anaya leaned forward slightly.

"Explain the complication."

He didn't hesitate.

"Your clause requires dual verification."

"Yes."

"That delays processing."

"It ensures accuracy."

"It reduces efficiency."

"It prevents misuse."

Back and forth.

Sharp.

Controlled.

Familiar.

The other members exchanged glances.

Because this—

This was what had been missing.

"You're prioritizing control over speed," he said.

"You're prioritizing speed over reliability," she replied.

"You're overcorrecting."

"You're underestimating risk."

A pause.

Then—

Both of them stopped.

At the same time.

Because they realized something.

This didn't feel like conflict.

It felt like… alignment again.

The room felt it too.

Because instead of clashing—

They were building something.

Together.

Even while disagreeing.

"Compromise," one of the members suggested carefully.

Anaya didn't look away from him.

"Single verification with audit fallback."

He considered it.

"Conditional approval?"

"Yes."

A pause.

Then—

"Accepted."

Just like that.

Done.

The tension in the room shifted.

Not heavy anymore.

Just… focused.

The meeting continued.

But something had already changed.

After it ended—

The others left quickly.

Again.

Leaving them behind.

Again.

This time—

Neither moved immediately.

"You adjusted the clause," he said.

"So did you."

"You didn't resist."

"You didn't push."

A small silence.

Then—

"You missed this," he said.

Not a question.

A statement.

She didn't answer immediately.

Because denying it—

Would be a lie.

"…it's efficient," she said instead.

He almost smiled.

"That's not what I asked."

She looked at him.

Carefully.

"…yes," she said.

Honest.

Simple.

A pause.

Then—

"So did you."

He didn't deny it.

"No."

That silence again.

But different.

Less controlled.

Less distant.

Outside the room—

Kiara stood still.

She hadn't entered.

But she had heard enough.

Seen enough.

The distance she created—

Was already weakening.

And that wasn't supposed to happen.

Back inside—

Neither of them stepped away.

Not immediately.

Because some things—

Didn't follow rules.

Not council rules.

Not structured boundaries.

And this—

Whatever this was—

Wasn't something they could keep separating.
