I laughed too, watching them. This was what I loved about them—the ease, the familiarity, the way they could turn anything into a joke. They had been doing this for years, long before I came along, and they had never made me feel like an outsider. They had just... opened up and let me in.
"I've got a question," Phoenix said suddenly.
The room went quiet. Everyone looked at Phoenix like he was crazy. What did he mean by j have a question? Only kids did that. He could just ask the question no one actually cared. He was behaving like some of the kids I tutor.
"What are you? A child?" I asked him.
"I guess?" He shrugged.
"Honestly, what the fuck is 'I've got a question'?" Soren said, throwing a piece of popcorn at him. "Just ask it."
"Why not just raise your hand and say 'Teach! Teach! I've got a question'?" Jamie suggested, grinning.
"Teach! Teach! I've got a question!" Phoenix raised his hand and waved it in the air, his face split in a ridiculous grin.
