Chapter 12 - Chapter 12. The Mountain Tests Its New Disciple

Feng Xiao settled into her new hut by nightfall, though the nervous glances she threw at every small sound suggested she wasn't used to safety yet. Ruolan quietly brought her water and blankets, whispering instructions on how to activate the warming formation etched into the floor. Lin Xuanji watched them with a strange warmth—seeing two disciples interact made the peak feel less lonely already.

He stood outside, leaning against a tree, staring at the moonlit stone beneath his feet. The mountain had reacted twice today. Once for Ruolan. Once for Feng Xiao. He didn't understand it, and the System was being intentionally vague—something he'd come to expect.

"System," he whispered quietly so neither disciple would hear, "is the mountain going to do that every time someone joins?"

(Only if the individual meets certain compatibility thresholds.)

"Compatibility with what?"

(With the sect.)

"Why does that sound like you're hiding something?"

(Host is imagining things.)

"Liar."

The System didn't deny it this time.

He sighed long and hard. The night breeze swept gently across the plateau, almost like the mountain was breathing. Ling Xueyin stood further away, hands behind her back, watching the sky as if the stars bothered her personally. Lin Xuanji approached her cautiously.

"Grand Elder?"

She turned her head slightly. "Sect Master."

"Earlier… when the mountain reacted, Feng Xiao said she felt welcomed. Is that normal?"

"Some places choose their inhabitants," she said calmly. "Heavenly Peak is such a place."

"That still doesn't explain anything."

She looked at him fully now, her expression soft yet firm, the way someone speaks to a child asking about thunderstorms. "You do not need to understand yet. The peak accepts who it must. That is enough for now."

Lin Xuanji groaned. "Every time you answer a question, it's like you're handing me another question."

"Good. Curiosity means you are thinking."

He threw his head back dramatically. "Please stop being wise."

Ling Xueyin smiled—barely, but it was there. "Rest, Sect Master. Tomorrow will be another step."

He muttered something about mysterious elders and cryptic advice, but he headed back toward his hut anyway. Before he could enter, he noticed movement from Feng Xiao's hut. Her door cracked open, and she stepped out, breathing heavily. Sweat ran down her brow, and her eyes glowed faintly ember-red.

"Feng Xiao?" Lin Xuanji stepped closer. "Everything alright?"

"I… felt something," she whispered, gripping her chest. "Something calling me… outside."

Lin Xuanji frowned. "System?"

(Her physique is reacting to the environment.)

"What does that mean?"

(Unclear. Host should observe.)

"So helpful…"

Feng Xiao walked past him slowly, eyes drawn toward the center of the peak. Ruolan came out of his hut, startled. "F-Feng Xiao? Where are you going?"

She didn't seem to hear him.

The mountain vibrated again. Not violently. Not dangerously. But like it recognized her steps. The ground beneath her feet warmed, faintly glowing with red-orange lines that spread like cracks in cooling magma.

Lin Xuanji froze. "Hey—HEY! Mountain, relax! No exploding! No sudden holes!"

Feng Xiao stopped, breathing unevenly. "It's… reacting to me."

Ling Xueyin appeared beside Lin Xuanji without a sound, her gaze following the glow. "It seems the peak acknowledges her."

Ruolan swallowed. "I-Is that good?"

Ling Xueyin nodded. "Very."

Feng Xiao knelt instinctively as if compelled by something deeper than conscious thought. The glow beneath her spread into a small circular mark—nothing grand, nothing explosive. Just a sign. A sign that she belonged here.

Lin Xuanji rubbed his temples. "Okay… okay. Mountain magic. Physique magic. System magic. Too much magic."

The System chimed.

(Host should remain calm.)

"Easy for YOU to say!"

The glow slowly faded, leaving Feng Xiao trembling but unharmed. She looked up, breathing shallowly. "Sect Master… am I… am I allowed to stay here?"

Lin Xuanji blinked, then smiled despite himself.

"Feng Xiao, the mountain obviously likes you more than it likes me. You're not going anywhere."

Ruolan laughed softly. Ling Xueyin's eyes warmed with approval.

Feng Xiao wiped her eyes. "Thank you… all of you."

Lin Xuanji helped her stand. "Alright. Enough glowing ground for one night. Back to bed." He glanced at the mountain. "And YOU—no more surprises while I'm sleeping."

The peak hummed gently, almost smug.

Lin Xuanji groaned. "I swear the mountain's mocking me."

He escorted Feng Xiao back to her hut, Ruolan following closely. Ling Xueyin watched them for a long moment, her expression shadowed with something unreadable—nostalgia, grief, relief.

Under the starlight, the mountain settled again.

Three huts.

Two disciples.

One Sect Master who had no idea what he was doing.

But Heavenly Peak… was awake.

And it was watching.
