Chapter 40 - Holding Pattern

Nothing happened.

Cain realized that before the first bell rang.

He woke early, staring at the dim ceiling of his room while the academy still slept. The silence wasn't heavy or ominous—it was familiar. The kind that existed every morning before the world decided to move again.

He stayed there for a while, breathing slowly, counting without meaning to.

Everything felt steady.

That should have reassured him.

It didn't.

When he finally sat up, he moved carefully—not because he expected pain, but because sudden movements felt unnecessary. He dressed, adjusted his uniform, and left the room without lingering.

---

The corridors were cool and mostly empty. Cain walked at an even pace, letting his hand brush the stone wall as he went. He kept his mana circulation shallow and quiet.

Nothing resisted him.

Nothing pushed back.

Rei appeared near the stairwell, hair still messy, yawning loudly as he walked.

"Please tell me today isn't another stabilization lecture," Rei said.

Cain glanced at him. "It is."

Rei stopped walking. "You're joking."

Cain kept going.

Rei hurried to catch up. "That's cruel. That's actually cruel."

They fell into step together, their pace matching naturally.

---

Mana Fundamentals passed without incident.

Cain followed instructions exactly, keeping his circulation restrained and unremarkable. When the instructor corrected him, it was routine.

"Steady, Cain. Don't rush."

"Yes, sir."

No one watched him longer than necessary. No one asked questions. The explanation given days ago fit neatly over everything he did now.

Cain made sure it stayed that way.

---

During the break, they sat on the stone bench overlooking the courtyard. Students sparred below, their movements confident and loud.

Rei leaned back on his hands. "You ever notice everyone here's either trying way too hard or pretending they don't care?"

Cain watched a student stumble mid-drill. "Which one are you?"

Rei grinned. "Depends on who's watching."

Cain let out a quiet breath that might've been a laugh.

He didn't test his mana. He didn't check inward. He focused on small things—the sound of boots on stone, the rhythm of sparring below.

Normal things.

---

As they crossed the courtyard later, Rei slowed slightly.

"Okay," he said, glancing sideways. "So I might be imagining things… but."

Cain looked at him. "But?"

Rei smirked. "You and Liora keep doing that eye-contact thing. I even saw you two yesterday near the corridor."

Cain stopped for half a second. "We weren't doing anything."

Rei raised his hands. "Hey, I'm not accusing. Just observing."

Cain resumed walking. "She's just… aware."

Rei nodded slowly. "Yeah. She looks like that kind of person."

And just like that, he dropped it.

---

The afternoon passed quietly.

Lectures. Light drills. Notes taken and forgotten. Cain stayed careful, unremarkable, steady.

By evening, the academy lights flickered on, casting long shadows across the halls.

"You training tonight?" Rei asked as they neared the dorms.

Cain shook his head. "Not today."

Rei blinked, then laughed. "Wow. Even machines need downtime."

Cain glanced at him. "I'm not a machine."

Rei grinned. "Could've fooled me."

They stopped at the dorm entrance.

"See you tomorrow," Rei said.

Cain nodded. "Yeah."

---

Inside his room, Cain sat on the edge of his bed and stayed there longer than he meant to.

Breathing.

Waiting.

When he finally raised his hand, there was no urgency.

"Status Window."

Nothing appeared.

Cain lowered his hand without reacting.

He lay back and stared at the ceiling, listening to the faint hum of wards woven into the academy walls.

Everything sounded normal.

The lie was holding.

And Cain understood something as sleep finally crept in:

Holding things together wasn't passive.

It took effort.
