Chapter 9 - Chapter 9: The Weight of an Unchosen Path

The morning sky above the Vale Clan was a different color from previous days.

The pale silver covering the horizon looked like the cold mist of the Highridge Spine descending faster than usual.

The wind wasn't as strong as usual, but it felt heavier every time it touched your skin, as if it carried an unspoken message.

The settlement was still quiet, but this silence did not feel peaceful. More like the silence that occurs when many thoughts move silently.

Ardyn walked along the eastern path, towards an old workshop under the shadow of a large cedar tree.

He intended to buy a new clasp for his sword sheath. There was no other purpose other than repairing the equipment to make it more stable when he walked with the nameless sword.

However, along the way, he felt a view that was not the same as yesterday.

Some residents looked down quickly when Ardyn passed them, trying not to meet their eyes.

Others stared as if they wanted to find out something from him. And there is a small group that actually looks at it in a different light.

A look that seemed to say that they realized something was changing beneath the surface.

Near the workshop, Ardyn passed Helmar Whiteshade, a wood fiber craftsman who was usually very vocal when working.

That day, Helmar just stopped his work and looked at Ardyn's sword seriously.

There's no fear there. There was actually a feeling of surprise, as if he felt the change in air pressure around Ardyn.

Helmar finally gave a small nod. "It's a tough morning for someone carrying a new load," he said.

Ardyn did not respond. He just noted that expression without changing his face. Information is more important than comments.

He continued his journey until a deep but muffled voice called him from the intersection.

"Ardyn."

Gareth Mornblade, the clan's martial arts instructor, appeared from behind a row of training columns. The man usually spoke in a loud and energetic voice, but this time he lowered his tone, as if he didn't want to attract attention.

"I want to talk for a moment," said Gareth.

Ardyn stopped right in front of him. "About what."

"There are reports that three students are stalking you. Daren Hillbluff, Emira Snowthorn, and Calven Mire. Are you aware?"

"Yes," answered Ardyn without additional explanation.

Gareth waited a few seconds, perhaps hoping Ardyn would explain further, but Ardyn was silent. There is no reason to drag out the conversation unnecessarily.

Finally Gareth sighed. "I'm not an elder, so my job isn't to set the direction of the clan. But I've seen ambition like that when I was still a disciple. Ambition is normal. But ambition without direction can be dangerous."

"Ambition is not wrong," responded Ardyn. "What's wrong is not knowing where to direct it."

Gareth stared at Ardyn for a moment, as if trying to judge his way of thinking. "Sometimes I forget that you are not an ordinary student."

Before leaving, Gareth added, "Pay attention to Lorin too. He thinks a lot. People who read too many signs can misinterpret everything."

Ardyn did not comment. He just took note of the advice, then continued his journey towards the training field.

There, Lorin and Seraphine were waiting. The two looked like they were discussing before Ardyn arrived. Lorin looked nervous, but not because he was afraid. More like someone trying to connect something without enough pieces of information.

"Ardyn," called Lorin. "I feel like something has changed in the clan. People are starting to talk about your sword as if it has something to do with things that don't make sense."

Seraphine added, "Some of the students even started comparing it to clan artifacts. Even though they didn't know anything about it."

Ardyn stood up without interrupting. He let them say what they wanted to say.

"I don't know if this is the start of something big or just a misunderstanding that's about to explode," Lorin said. "But I can sense an unusual pattern."

"If they want to understand, they can ask directly," said Ardyn. "If they choose to guess, that's their business."

Seraphine looked at Ardyn for a long time. "Not everyone has that kind of courage."

"Or they are too afraid of the wrong thing," said Ardyn calmly.

Seraphine didn't argue. And Lorin just took a deep breath, as if Ardyn's answer emphasized the anxiety he felt.

---

Meanwhile, in a small meeting room behind the training hall, another discussion was taking place. Not an official meeting of the elders, but a special meeting led by Gaius to assess the situation.

Gaius sat at the head of the small table, accompanied by Sylen, Mirra, and Brom. Lorin was summoned as a witness to the phenomenon he saw yesterday. Renar was not invited, a clear indication that Gaius wanted to keep the discussion clear of the pressure of excessive authority.

Gaius opened the conversation. "The clan is starting to move in a way that we are not directing. This is not healthy."

Mirra rubbed her chin gently. "Society will always try to give meaning to something they don't understand. Ardyn's sword gave them enough reason to start guessing."

Sylen stared at the scroll of notes. "Collective resonance is not an empty theory. If the sword responds to the direction of the community, then social change can accelerate the response."

Brom, who was usually reluctant to speak unless necessary, finally spoke up. "If rumors about the 'clan's new direction' get bigger, Ardyn will become the center of conflict. Not because he is wrong, but because people need a figure to pin their hopes or fears on."

Gaius looked at the other elders. "The question is simple. Is Ardyn the starting line for something, or just a catalyst for something bigger."

Everyone was silent for a moment. There is no answer that is safe enough to say.

---

At the same time, far away from the meeting, Daren Hillbluff, Emira Snowthorn, and Calven Mire gathered quietly behind the armory.

Daren looked left and right before speaking. "Ardyn is getting closer to a space we can't access. If he continues to expand, all clan hierarchies will change."

Emira nodded. "I want to know what the sword did. I have no intention of stealing it. But I want to know what made the elder change his attitude."

Calven added, "If his sword can open a new path, we must understand it first before it is too late."

They don't mean any harm. They only see uncertainty as an opportunity.

---

Ardyn went to a small forest on the eastern edge of the Vale, where he usually observed without interruption. The tall trees filtered the light of the morning sun, making the place calm and gentle. He came not to train, but to verify a hypothesis that had arisen since leaving the Inner Archives Room.

He stood still, holding his sword close to his chest, eyes closing briefly to calculate the rhythm of the air. The sound of the leaves was clear, as if the world was waiting for his movements.

He swung the sword without any intention. No response.

Then he thought of the clan. Small changes that are starting to move:

rumors are spreading

three disciples' plan

elders meeting

unclear form of fear

The sword vibrated thinly.

Ardyn opened his eyes slowly. "So you're an indicator," he said quietly.

He imagined the concept of an undecided direction. A concept formed from many thoughts that influence each other.

The sword vibrated a little stronger.

Ardyn lowered his sword. "If the world doubts, you doubt. If the world judges, you live."

The sound of twigs being stepped on came from behind. Lorin appeared from behind the trees, his breathing a little rapid.

"You're talking to the sword?" Lorin asked.

"I was testing something."

Lorin came closer, but not too close. "I'm not sure the clan is ready for the answers you found."

"Readiness doesn't change anything."

Lorin fell silent. He knew Ardyn was right.

---

When they returned to the settlement, the atmosphere was still different. People see Ardyn as someone who is leading a new, unread path. Not only students, but also ordinary citizens.

Seraphine approached him. "Ardyn. What do you plan to do after this?"

Ardyn answered without hesitation. "I didn't choose the road. The road came closer."

Seraphine was silent, trying to understand the meaning of that answer.

In the distance, Renar watched Ardyn with a sharp gaze. He began to realize that he could not control this problem with authority alone.

The nameless sword vibrated again subtly, very subtly, but Ardyn felt it like a small pulse in the air.

The sword listened to the clan's new direction. And started aligning himself.

Ardyn stepped forward without looking.

He began to understand that he was no longer walking the path the world had left behind.

That path is actually shaping him.
