In an instant, the monster army vanished. The flames had charred the cavern walls black. Roy was satisfied with the Holy Sword's debut; its power was equivalent to a high-tier Level 3 mage's long-form chant, but it required no incantation.
Because it absorbed mana from the air, Roy only had to use a small amount of mental energy. It was effectively a "Magic Sword" that would never break.
"Wow!" Marie clapped her hands. As a sentient Xenos, she understood that Roy was defending himself.
The Enhanced Mermaid, however, was paralyzed with terror. She had survived only by cowering behind a rock while her "shields" were vaporized. Her instinct told her to run, but she knew if she showed him her back, she'd be dead in a second.
She began to sing again. Roy frowned; even if she summoned hundreds more, one swing of his sword would end them. But then, a dozen figures crawled out from the crevices—the missing adventurers.
Roy realized Freya's plan. She hadn't killed them; she had the Mermaid control them as pawns. The controlled adventurers, all Level 2, rushed at Roy like dolls.

"Are you misunderstanding something?" Roy's eyes turned cold. Did she take him for a soft-hearted saint like Ryuu? His reputation was built on blood. Between the Rudra and Apollo Familias, he had killed more people than he could count.
He put away the Holy Sword—he didn't want to use it on adventurers, especially since a few were elves.
Zap!
Lightning formed a blade in his hand. He lunged forward. In a blur of movement, he harvested their lives. Cold steel flashed, and heads rolled as blood sprayed the cavern. These controlled puppets were weaker than monsters of the same rank.
As Roy approached like a god of death, the Mermaid panicked. She tried to cry, her tears turning into crystals as she sang. This time, the remaining adventurers regained consciousness.
"Save me! Mr. Roy, save me!" they wailed, even as their bodies continued to attack him against their will. The mages in the back began chanting for help.
Roy's expression remained indifferent. Nice try. If he killed them while they were "mindless," he might feel nothing. But killing them while they begged for mercy? That was a test of his resolve. His response was a single swing, taking off three more heads.
"AAAAAAGH!" The survivors screamed in terror. Seeing no rescue, their pleas turned to curses.
"How dare you! The Guild and our Familias won't let you get away with this!"
Roy sneered. Go tell it to Freya. These gods played with the world like a toy; why should he play by their rules? He tanked their incoming magic with his gauntlet's shield and waded through the blood-red water to finish them off.
The Mermaid tried to dive into the water. Roy hurled a lightning spear with every ounce of his Level 3 strength. The bolt nailed her through the chest, pinning her to the cavern wall.
She was only Level 3 with low stats. Without her puppets, she was nothing. Roy reached her in a flash. She tried to claw at him, but he blocked with his gauntlet and thrust his lightning-covered hand into her chest. He felt something hard, gripped it, and ripped it out.
Rip!
He held a dark-purple magic stone. The Enhanced Mermaid stiffened and dissolved into ash.
At the top of the Tower of Babel, Freya swirled her wine, watching the scene through her divine sight. "If that child's justice had returned only for you to slaughter those adventurers, you would have lost the right to stand beside her. But you didn't hesitate. Disappear, then."
