Chapter 64 - Chapter 63 : ErdTree Avatar !

The Boss Fog surged, and Orion stepped through into an open area. It looked like a cavern with a vast clearing—very similar to the floor from the anime where the first Dungeon Boss, Goliath, emerged.

As Orion looked around, the Dungeon floor trembled. He could feel a powerful presence rising from below. He had a feeling this boss fight wouldn't be as easy as the previous ones. Beldia had been difficult, but that was because he was a Level-Up Boss. The normal bosses he had faced so far hadn't been that strong—until now.

Orion stopped walking and readied himself, staff in hand.

Soon the ground shook, and a massive crack split open before him.

From the broken stone, something enormous rose.

It looked exactly like the Erdtree Avatar from Elden Ring.

A massive, twisted tree trunk formed its body. No leaves—just rough bark and thick wooden limbs. Two heavy legs rooted into stone. Two long arms ending in clawed wooden hands.

And in its grip—

A gigantic golden club, faint light shimmering around it.

Orion swallowed. "You've got to be kidding me…"

Of course he remembered this boss. It was definitely from the game.

[A Minor Erdtree Spirit…] Marika's eyes widened. She clearly recognized the creature.

[But how? How is it possible for it to be here?]

The monster let out a deep, wooden groan.

Orion's instincts screamed at him. This fight would not be easy.

"I don't know why it's here," Orion muttered, tightening his grip on his staff, "but I know what we have to do. Beat the bastard."

After leveling up, this would be his first real test.

He was currently in a mage setup—no blades, no incantations, and no close combat if he could avoid it.

And here was a fun fact: a mage didn't necessarily have to fight alone.

"I've wanted to try this for so long," he grinned, reaching into his inventory.

He pulled out the Spirit Calling Bell—and a gray ash shaped like a massive figure. Immediately, he felt a large portion of his mana burn away.

He rang the bell.

A hollow chime echoed through the chamber. Dark energy gathered before him.

He quickly drank another Mana Flask to replenish what he had lost.

Then—

A Spirit Ash manifested.

It was the same Spirit Ash he had obtained after clearing the USJ dungeon.

Before him appeared a spectral version of NOMU.

Huge. Muscular. Brain exposed. Eyes empty.

The same monstrosity.

It let out a distorted roar.

Marika stared at it silently.

[That creature again.]

"USJ incident souvenir," Orion replied dryly.

The Erdtree Avatar roared in response.

And the battle began.

Orion didn't need to give Nomu orders. It charged first, slamming into the wooden giant and forcing it back a step.

Orion blinked in surprise but immediately acted, taking his role as a backline mage.

"Glintstone Pebble!"

Blue shards of magic shot forward, striking the Avatar's torso.

Crack!

Bark splintered.

"Okay, that's damage." Orion pursed his lips. Against the massive tree monster, however, the damage looked almost laughable.

The Avatar lifted its golden club.

BOOM!

It slammed into the ground. A shockwave exploded outward.

"Move!"

Orion jumped back just in time as the stone floor shattered where he had stood.

Nomu grabbed the Avatar's leg, holding it in place while Orion fired more pebbles.

Again.

And again.

And again.

He kept firing Glintstone Pebbles from a distance, slowly chipping away at the Erdtree Avatar's health. If not for Nomu's regenerative ability mirroring the original, the Avatar would have torn it apart already.

The damage accumulated—but far too slowly for Orion's liking.

"…This is going to take forever," he grumbled. The fact that the same attack had nearly knocked out a fully grown Orc earlier showed just how much stronger this boss was.

Then the Avatar twisted suddenly.

WHAM!

Its club swung sideways.

Nomu took the full hit and crashed into the wall at the edge of the chamber.

"Shit…"

The Erdtree Avatar turned toward Orion.

Golden light gathered around its body.

"Can I ask for a break? No? Didn't think so."

Small orbs of golden energy formed in the air.

Just like in the game, they fired forward in rapid succession.

Missiles of golden grace.

Orion sprinted sideways.

Boom! Boom! Boom!

Golden explosions chased him across the chamber. He dove and rolled, barely avoiding each blast.

'I never liked this attack in the game either,' he complained internally while running for his life.

Marika's calm voice echoed in his mind.

[Dodge better.]

"Thanks!"

He fired pebbles while moving.

A few hit.

Most missed.

Nomu recovered and tackled the Avatar again, grabbing its torso and punching repeatedly. Arguably, the brainless monstrosity had done more damage so far than its summoner.

The wooden boss groaned and smashed its club down onto Nomu's back.

Orion quickly checked his flasks.

Three mana flasks total.

One used before entering.

One used after summoning Nomu.

One left.

No healing flasks.

That was the downside of being a mage—most flasks were allocated to mana recovery. He simply didn't have enough charges for health restoration.

"…If I get hit once, I'm dead. But staying long-range won't last forever. Sooner or later, I'll get hit—if not by that club, then by the golden light."

Marika glanced at him.

[Then do not get hit.]

"Brilliant advice," Orion muttered.

Still, she was right.

His current strategy wouldn't work. He needed more damage.

"Golden Order incantation?" he asked quickly. "Discus of Light?"

Marika's eyes sharpened.

[Foolishness. The Erdtree Avatar is born of the Erdtree itself. Golden incantations will be weakened against it.

I detest admitting it, but this is precisely the time for that 'useless' sorcery you insist on using.]

Orion blinked. "…You're serious?"

[Yes.]

He groaned.

"So my holy magic is useless against the holy tree."

[Correct.]

"Of course it is."

That meant one thing.

He had to go close.

Carian Slicer was his only option.

Sighing, Orion rushed forward. A glowing blue blade extended from his staff.

He dodged a heavy downward smash—

And slashed across the Avatar's leg.

CRACK!

This time, it did real damage. Bark split open. Golden sap sprayed out.

"Okay! That's good!"

But fighting up close was terrifying.

The club swung again. Orion ducked under it, wind pressure brushing past his hair.

He slashed again.

And again.

Nomu grabbed the Avatar from behind, holding its arms briefly.

"Nice!"

Orion leapt forward and carved a glowing line across its chest.

The Avatar roared.

Golden light erupted outward once more.

"Shit!"

Both Orion and Nomu were blasted backward.

Orion rolled hard across the stone floor.

His heart pounded.

He had narrowly dodged, but the explosion was so violent he was clipped anyway.

A third of his health was gone.

"Motherf—"

His mind raced.

"This isn't working. Two more hits like that and I'm done."

The longer this dragged on, the more likely he'd make a mistake.

He needed a decisive attack.

He stood slowly.

"…Guess I have no choice."

He grabbed his last Mana Flask.

"Bottoms up."

He drained it in one go. Energy surged through him.

Nomu charged again, keeping the Avatar occupied.

Orion stepped back.

Closed his eyes.

And began chanting.

"If this doesn't work, I'll have to do this all over again…" he muttered, grimacing as he poured all his mana into the spell.

[…Reckless fool.]

Marika sighed heavily.

The Avatar smashed Nomu into the ground repeatedly, trying to break free. Thankfully, Nomu possessed regeneration and shock absorption.

Mana surged violently around Orion.

He opened his eyes. They glowed faintly.

Instead of casting from afar—

He ran straight toward the Erdtree Avatar.

Marika's eyes widened.

[Where do you think you're going?!]

He didn't respond.

He rushed forward, entering the Avatar's reach just as it raised its club to crush him.

He thrust his staff forward at point-blank range.

"EXPLOSION!"

A blinding flash of red and orange erupted.

The blast swallowed everything.

The chamber shook violently.

Stone shattered.

The golden club cracked.

Nomu dissolved back into Spirit Ash as the explosion consumed the battlefield.

In the final moment before the light overwhelmed him, Orion saw a torrent of mana pierce through the Erdtree Avatar.

Then—

Everything went blank.
