Chapter 7 - Chapter 7: Beihai Kindergarten and Nanshan Nursing Home

During the remaining four days of the tournament, the team melee and the archery competition also crowned their final champions.

King Robert personally participated in the team melee, so he was the ultimate winner.

As for the archery competition, the champion hailed from Dorne; he was an archer named Anguy.

After the seven-day tournament concluded, the lords from various regions gradually returned to their respective fiefdoms.

Mufasa's popularity value also entered a period of sluggish growth, increasing by only one or two points a day. He felt he had to do something, otherwise, his popularity value wouldn't be enough!

Therefore, Mufasa went to the Tower of the Hand to find Jon Arryn.

"Mufasa, what brings you here?" Jon Arryn asked, setting down the quill in his hand inside the Tower of the Hand.

"I would like to ask you to approve two plots of land for me, Lord Hand," Mufasa said.

"Two plots of land? What do you intend to use them for?" Jon was extremely curious.

"To build a kindergarten and a nursing home. They will house the orphans and the elderly without family in King's Landing."

Jon Arryn saw that Mufasa was serious, but he was still very curious why he would do such a thing.

"This will require a massive expenditure of money and food! I can approve the land for you, but many of the children in King's Landing are Lord Varys's 'little birds,' and he might obstruct you from building a kindergarten," Jon Arryn warned.

"Don't worry, I will persuade Lord Varys!" Mufasa declared, patting his chest.

"Very well. Once you find suitable locations, come back to me, and I will process the formal paperwork for you," Jon Arryn said.

"Thank you very much, Lord Hand!"

Mufasa left the Tower of the Hand and immediately went to find Varys.

Varys was an eunuch, which everyone knew, and he hailed from the Free Cities, across the Narrow Sea, meaning he was not native to the continent of Westeros.

Yet, using his own abilities, he had climbed step by step to the position of Master of Whisperers on the Small Council.

Like Grand Maester Pycelle, Varys was one of the few who had retained his official position through a change in dynasty.

"For our young knight to seek out a mere eunuch like me is truly flattering, Ser Mufasa!"

As soon as Varys saw Mufasa, he immediately played down his own status, referring to himself as an eunuch.

"Lord Varys, I am merely a knight, while you are a Lord!" Mufasa countered.

"You know I am a Lord? I doubt even Lord Renly is aware that I hold that title," Varys said, looking at Mufasa with curiosity.

Although he controlled all the intelligence in King's Landing, information required time to travel. Mufasa had just left the Tower of the Hand and arrived at Varys's residence, meaning Varys had not yet learned what Mufasa had discussed with Jon Arryn.

"I have come regarding a matter of public welfare, and I hope Lord Varys can assist me."

Mufasa explained his idea of establishing an orphanage and a nursing home to Varys.

Varys listened, paused for a moment in silence, and then asked.

"They are all vulnerable people. If they are gathered in one place on a large scale, how will their safety be guaranteed?"

"By spending money to hire people as gatekeepers and guards!"

"And the money? Who will pay for it? I hardly believe the Hand of the King will say: 'Let Littlefinger rub two gold dragons together until they become three, and the extra dragon is yours,'" Varys remarked.

"The money will come from me, personally, not the House Lannister," Mufasa stated. He knew that the people of King's Landing remembered Tywin Lannister leading the sack of the city.

Their attitude toward the Lannisters was far from friendly, but Mufasa originated from a local brothel in King's Landing, not Casterly Rock.

Therefore, his background would allow the elderly of King's Landing to accept his goodwill, and the children would certainly be receptive.

"It seems you are quite precocious, Ser Mufasa. Are you building your own foundation?" Varys believed Mufasa was establishing his own power base.

In his view, since Mufasa was not born at Casterly Rock, even if he inherited it later, he would find himself in a difficult position due to a lack of loyal retainers.

However, if he could raise a group of children who grew up with him, he would have many loyal soldiers supporting him once he came of age.

"All the children in King's Landing are your 'little birds.' If I establish an orphanage, I will inevitably infringe upon your interests. Is Lord Varys willing to yield some of that influence?" Mufasa asked.

"Very well. For the sake of the innocent children of King's Landing, I am willing to let my 'little birds' join your orphanage, but you will also be monitored by them!" Varys made his meaning perfectly clear.

Mufasa didn't care. Let them monitor him; the more people watching, the more his popularity value would increase. Having someone secretly promote him for free was exactly what he wanted!

After passing the hurdle of Varys, Mufasa returned to the Red Keep.

He checked the amount of money he currently possessed.

Thirty thousand gold dragons and ten thousand silver stags.

Ten thousand gold dragons came from winning the tournament, ten thousand were given by Tywin, and the rest were obtained through the lottery draws.

"This money should be enough for the short term! After all, common folk mostly use copper coins for purchases and rarely use gold or silver. Converting the money into a larger quantity of copper coins should cover the expenses of the orphanage and nursing home for at least a year."

Next, Mufasa found a few Lannister soldiers and went with them outside King's Landing to locate two vacant plots of land that were uninhabited and free of large predatory animals.

After selecting the locations, Mufasa began hiring laborers in King's Landing to start construction on the orphanage and nursing home, simultaneously announcing that they would take in homeless children and the elderly.

King's Landing had a population exceeding half a million. Many people in the slums and Flea Bottom were barely surviving.

They had originally come from other regions, hoping to find good work in King's Landing, but the reality was that too many people flocked to the city. They eventually ran out of money and accrued massive debts, forcing them to work to pay them off. Only when they were too old to work did they finally clear their debts.

Brothels were King's Landing's biggest feature, and Littlefinger controlled the majority of them. Many prostitutes gave birth to their clients' children; some gave the babies away, some simply killed them, and those who couldn't bear to kill the child chose to let the child wander the streets.

Walking the streets of King's Landing, it was common to see children stealing, and people were generally accustomed to it.

Because Mufasa was overseeing the construction of the orphanage and nursing home, he was constantly running back and forth between the city and the construction sites. He was extremely tired and ate a massive amount during dinner every night.

King Robert noticed this and wondered what was wrong with the boy.

At the royal dinner on another evening, Mufasa had already finished three pig trotters. He picked up a fourth.

"Mufasa! I hear your orphanage and nursing home are nearing completion?" Jon Arryn asked from across the table.

Mufasa nodded, said nothing, and continued eating the trotter.

"I have also heard rumors that crime in King's Landing has dropped significantly, and they say it is because you established the orphanage and nursing home outside the city?" Stannis inquired.

As a hardliner, Stannis had once proposed closing down all brothels to maintain public order, but this proposal was collectively rejected by the other members of the Small Council.

"Mufasa, why are you doing such thankless work? Now that you are a knight, you should focus on honing your martial skills and sharpening your sword, so that when war comes, you can fight for the King and the realm," Renly said.

"Gulp, gulp!" Mufasa drank a large mouthful of water, swallowed all the meat in his mouth, and then wiped the grease from his lips.

"I am a knight blessed by the Seven, and I am a knight dubbed by the King. The edicts of the Seven Gods and the command of the King require me to protect all women, the elderly, and children."

"Women can be protected by the septas, but children and the elderly often lack care, which is why I want to protect them. At the very least, I wish to give them a place to live that shields them from the elements," Mufasa explained.

Seeing Mufasa's righteous demeanor, the others sheepishly refrained from raising any further objections.

At this point, King Robert asked.

"Have you chosen names for the orphanage and nursing home? Would you like me to name them for you? I am the King, after all!"

"Your Grace, I have already decided. They shall be called Beihai Kindergarten and Nanshan Nursing Home."

Mufasa spoke the two names.
