Chapter 8 - Chapter 8: Elevator Chaos and Confessions

It was another typical morning at Harlington & Co., with the hum of computers, the clatter of keyboards, and the faint smell of brewed coffee drifting through the open office. Lila Moreno was carefully organizing her desk, making sure every paper was perfectly aligned, when she heard a familiar voice.

"Good morning, demoness," Raven Hale drawled, leaning casually against her cubicle wall.

Lila stiffened, instinctively straightening her posture. "Morning," she replied curtly, though her heart was already racing.

"Big day?" he asked, flashing that infuriatingly charming smile.

"Always," she muttered, adjusting her blouse.

The Elevator Incident

The day's true chaos began when Lila stepped into the elevator, only to find Raven already there. She considered taking the stairs, but the elevator had been fast and convenient—until it decided otherwise.

Halfway up, the lights flickered, and the elevator shuddered to a stop.

"Oh… fantastic," Lila muttered, gripping the railing.

Raven, standing too close for comfort, chuckled. "Looks like we're trapped. Just you, me, and our thoughts."

Lila's heart raced. Too close… too close…

"Don't panic," he said casually, leaning against the wall and making it impossible to ignore how close he was. "I've survived worse. You'll survive this. And maybe… we'll get to know each other better."

Lila's cheeks burned. "I— I don't think this is the time to—"

Before she could finish, a loud click signaled the emergency lights turning on. The small space suddenly felt intimate. Raven's eyes softened, the playful teasing replaced by something almost sincere.

Close Quarters, Closer Hearts

Trapped in the elevator, conversation flowed naturally, punctuated by awkward pauses and nervous laughter.

Raven teased Lila about her "perfect posture," pointing out how tense she looked.

Lila retaliated by mocking his dramatic expressions.

At one point, their hands brushed as they reached for the emergency button simultaneously. Both froze, hearts skipping a beat.

Why does my heart feel like it's racing this fast? Lila wondered, trying to hide her blush.

And why does she make me want to smile like this? Raven thought, secretly intrigued by her nervousness and sharp wit.

Unexpected Confession

As the minutes stretched, Lila noticed Raven staring at her more intently than usual.

"Is something wrong?" she asked cautiously.

"No," he said softly, leaning closer, just enough that she could feel the warmth of his presence. "It's just… you're different from everyone else. I like that. I like seeing this side of you."

Her breath caught. This side of me? Does he… actually see me?

"I… I'm not sure I know which side you're talking about," she murmured, her voice barely above a whisper.

He smiled gently. "The real side. The one you hide from everyone."

For a moment, the elevator felt like the entire world—just the two of them, their shared space filled with unspoken words and fluttering hearts.

Rescue and Aftermath

Eventually, the elevator jolted back to life, and the doors opened. They stepped out, both trying to act casual, though their faces betrayed the intimacy of the moment.

Coworkers passed by, completely unaware of the closeness that had just occurred.

Lila and Raven exchanged one last lingering glance before walking to their respective desks.

At her desk, Lila couldn't stop replaying the conversation: He… he sees me. And he said he likes seeing me. Why does that feel… amazing?

Raven, meanwhile, was quietly smiling at his monitor. She's clever, she's nervous, she's perfect. And I want to see more of her.
