The glow from Athena's laptop painted her face in pale blue as her fingers moved rapidly across the keyboard. Code scrolled endlessly, numbers and symbols blurring into purpose. Beside the laptop, her phone was propped against a book, Madeline's face flickering on the screen.
"So," Madeline said, resting her chin on her palm, "now that your father's buried… what's next?"
Athena didn't look up.
"First, I change schools."
Madeline raised an eyebrow.
"Then?" she prompted.
Athena paused, finally leaning back in her chair.
"Then I start planning how to retaliate against the Black Thorns Mafia Organization."
Madeline's expression sobered.
"And after that?"
Athena's voice softened.
"If my mother's still alive… I'll find her. And we'll live quietly. Happily. At least try to."
She smiled faintly, like she wasn't sure she deserved that ending.
"I hope she really is alive," she added.
Madeline studied her for a moment before smiling.
"Don't forget," she said gently, "you've got a sister who isn't going anywhere."
Athena finally turned her full attention to the screen.
"I know," she said. "And I'm grateful for you."
Madeline grinned.
"Good. Now tell me—what's tomorrow?"
Athena frowned.
"Tomorrow?"
"Yes. Tomorrow."
"What about it?"
Madeline leaned closer to her camera.
"You seriously don't know?"
Athena glanced at the small desk calendar and shrugged.
"January thirteenth."
Madeline threw her hands up.
"Oh my God, Athena. It's your birthday!"
Athena blinked.
"…Oh."
"Oh?" Madeline repeated. "That's all you've got?"
Athena rubbed her temples.
"I've had a lot going on."
Madeline sighed dramatically.
"I remember it better than you do."
"I know," Athena said softly, then froze.
Her eyes locked onto the laptop screen.
"Wait."
Madeline straightened.
"What?"
Athena's fingers hovered over the keyboard. Her heartbeat thundered in her ears.
"I think… I think my mother just sent me a message."
Madeline's smile vanished.
"Are you serious?"
"The codename," Athena whispered. "G GOD. That's hers."
Madeline swallowed.
"What does it say?"
"It's encrypted."
Silence.
"How long to decode?" Madeline asked.
Athena exhaled.
"All night."
Madeline nodded slowly.
"Then I'll let you work."
"Aren't you mad?" Athena asked. "It's my birthday."
Madeline smiled sadly.
"You'll get cake another day. This… this matters more."
Athena nodded.
"Talk tomorrow?"
"Tomorrow," Madeline agreed. "Be careful, okay?"
"I always am."
The call ended.
Athena stared at the encrypted message, her reflection staring back at her from the screen.
"Please," she murmured to no one, "don't let this be bad news."
Her fingers dropped back onto the keyboard.
And the night answered with silence.
