Chapter 396 - Chapter 396 - The Unraveling

Location: The Crucible Grounds - Arena Floor

Time: Present Day - Tournament Finals

Slate's grip tightened around Chloe's neck, his body trembling with barely contained fury. His voice carried a note of cold, venomous rage.

"No answer, huh? Fine. I guess you don't care about your flower after all."

His finger pressed against the trigger of the G-Volt. Chloe's eyes closed, her body tensing as she accepted her fate.

And then it happened.

One of Slate's men moved. His body jerked forward, his arm swinging in a sharp, arc-like motion. Something hard connected with the back of Slate's head with a sickening crack.

Slate's eyes widened. His grip on Chloe loosened, his body stumbling forward. He released her completely, his hands flying to his head.

The crowd's reaction was immediate—a chorus of gasps, laughter, and disbelieving murmurs.

"Did you see that?! His own man just clocked him!"

"Talk about a mutiny! This is better than any movie!"

"Slate getting bodied by his own crew? I've seen everything now!"

"I don't know who that guy is, but he's my new hero."

A younger spectator leaned forward, his voice carrying a note of Gen-Z amusement. "Bro got his whole world flipped. L + ratio. Man's out here getting packed by his own squad."

Another spectator nodded, his voice dripping with sarcastic glee. "This is the best thing that's happened all day. I hope he gets humiliated even more. Maybe they'll start doing the Macarena next."

A third spectator, a woman with sharp eyes, shook her head slowly. "Imagine being Slate right now. You come in all tough, ready to capture the most wanted man in Crestwood, and your own guys turn on you. That's gotta sting."

The geeky kid remained silent, but a small, knowing smile played at his lips.

---

Slate held his head, his eyes blazing with cold fury. He stared at his men, his body trembling with rage.

"What the hell do you think you're doing?!" he shouted, his voice cracking with fury. "Have you two gone mad?! Or are you secretly Elijah's minions that infiltrated my Taskforce department?!"

His men's expressions were one of terror-stricken confusion. Their lips moved, but no words came out. Their eyes were wide, their bodies rigid.

Slate's voice carried a note of cold realization. "If that's the case, you two can forget leaving here alive."

The men moved.

Their bodies lunged forward with mechanical precision, their movements fluid and terrifying. Their steps were quick, deliberate—the kind of motion that belonged to puppets with a hidden directive. One man's fist arced toward Slate's face, while the other's knee drove toward his midsection.

Slate's body reacted with practiced skill. His head twisted, the fist passing harmlessly by his ear. His arm shot down, blocking the knee with a sharp, controlled motion. His foot swept low, catching one of the men's ankles.

The man stumbled, but didn't fall. His body twisted, his elbow arcing toward Slate's head.

Slate ducked, his body moving with fluid grace. His fist shot out, connecting with the man's ribs. The impact sent a shockwave through the attacker's body, but he didn't flinch. He didn't react. He just kept coming.

The crowd watched in stunned silence, their voices lost in the chaos of the fight.

"Look at them go! It's like they're not even feeling the hits!"

"Something's wrong with those guys. They're not acting normal."

"Normal? Nothing about this day has been normal. I'm just waiting for the aliens to show up at this point."

---

The OSI agents raised their weapons, their movements sharp and deliberate. They aimed at the two men attacking Slate, their fingers on the triggers.

And then the snipers moved.

A series of sharp, precise shots echoed through the arena. The OSI agents crumpled, their bodies hitting the ground with heavy thuds. The crowd screamed, their bodies ducking for cover.

"What the hell is happening?!"

"Someone's shooting at the OSI! Who's doing this?!"

"I don't know, but I don't want to be anywhere near it!"

Spectators dove to the ground, their hands covering their heads. Others scrambled toward the exits, their bodies pressing against each other in a desperate attempt to escape.

"Move! Move! Get out of the way!"

"Don't push me!"

"I'm trying! Everyone's trying!"

A middle-aged man with a briefcase held it over his head like a shield, his voice carrying a note of desperate humor. "I knew I should have stayed home today! But no, I had to come see the 'big tournament.' What was I thinking?!"

His companion, a woman in a business suit, rolled her eyes even as she ducked. "You said it would be 'a good networking opportunity.' I'm going to network my foot up your—"

Another shot rang out. Both of them hit the ground.

Valerik craned his neck, his expression one of deep unease. Jericho's body was rigid, his eyes scanning the chaos with cold intensity.

Nikolai Morozov's voice carried a note of genuine shock. "Just what the freaking f*ck is going on here?!"

Dhivya Rana's voice was sharp, calculating. "I don't know, but something tells me some wacko's hand is painted all over it."

Valerik separated from the group, his body moving with exaggerated care. His voice carried a note of mocking apology.

"With the madness going on right now, I don't trust any of you. No offense."

His hands raised in a placating gesture as he moved away.

"Don't take it personally. It's just... you know... survival instincts. I'm sure you understand."

Jericho's voice carried a note of cold irritation. "You're really going to bail on us now?"

Valerik's voice carried a note of theatrical innocence. "Bail? I'm just... repositioning. Strategically. It's a tactical decision."

Nikolai's voice carried a note of dark amusement. "Tactical. Right. You're scared."

Valerik's voice was flat. "I'm not scared. I'm... cautious. There's a difference."

Brenna's voice was calm, measured. Her body tensed, her gaze fixed on the chaos below. Eugene Torrent's hand moved to his weapon, his expression one of cold suspicion.

Brenna's voice carried a note of quiet observation. "Something's not right here. These men—they're not acting like themselves. They're being controlled."

Eugene's voice was sharp. "Controlled by who?"

Brenna's gaze shifted to the chaos below. "That's the question, isn't it?"

---

Michael Snovidenie leaned toward Brenda, his voice carrying a note of genuine concern. "Quantum Flow Adept, what is happening?"

Brenda's expression remained calm, her gaze fixed on the chaos below. But something shifted in her eyes—a flicker of recognition.

A subtle ripple moved through the air. A faint, spectral presence emerged from one of the snipers, drifting through the chaos like a ghost. It moved with a fluid, almost hypnotic grace—a shape of shifting, rippling light that seemed to pulse with a life of its own. It was like a fragment of the ocean's deepest depths given form, a piece of subconscious void given shape.

Michael's eyes widened. His body tensed, his voice carrying a note of genuine fear.

"What—what is that?!"

Brenda's expression shifted to one of quiet surprise. Her voice carried a note of wonder.

"As expected of the deviant's capabilities."

The spectral presence drifted toward Brenda, its form shifting and rippling. It reached her, then dissipated—melting away into the air like mist in the morning sun.

Michael's voice carried a note of quiet awe. "Did you see that? It just... vanished."

Brenda's voice was soft, almost reverent. "He is here. Even I can't sense his presence. Which is odd."

Her gaze swept the arena, her eyes narrowing with curiosity.

"I wonder just how he does it."

Michael's expression was one of quiet fear and fascination.

"Deviant... what is he?"

Brenda's voice carried a note of quiet certainty. "Something we've never seen before. Something that shouldn't exist. And yet, here he is."

---

The arena continued to descend into chaos. Slate fought his men, his movements a blur of controlled violence. The crowd screamed, scrambling for cover. The OSI agents lay on the ground, their bodies broken and still.
