Chapter 133 - Chapter 133 - Crestwood PD — The Circus Stays Open

The Crestwood Police Department's third-floor detective bureau looked, at any given hour, like the aftermath of a filing system that had given up on itself and decided to become abstract art instead.

Case folders occupied every horizontal surface with the democratic disregard of things that had long since exceeded the storage capacity designed for them. Coffee cups formed small civilizations around monitor bases. Whiteboards carried the layered archaeological record of cases solved, cases stalled, and cases that someone had partially erased to make room for new information without fully committing to the erasure. The overhead lighting had been described by no fewer than four separate maintenance requests as *aggressively mediocre*, and it remained so, casting everything in the particular pallor of a room that had made its peace with looking slightly unwell.

Nia Halloway sat at her desk in the way that detectives who have been in a building too long sit — not quite upright, not quite relaxed, occupying the specific posture of someone whose body has negotiated a truce with an uncomfortable chair over a period of months and arrived at something functional if not dignified. Case notes spread across her workspace in an arrangement that looked chaotic and was in fact a system she would have been able to navigate blindfolded. Her jacket hung on the back of the chair. Her sleeves were pushed to the elbow. The expression on her face was the quiet, concentrated variety that people mistake for blankness until they say something worth reacting to.

Around her, the bureau was running its usual evening ambient noise.

"—I'm just going to say it." This was Drummond, two desks over, leaning back in his chair with the exhausted philosophy of a man who had stopped filtering his observations sometime around year seven of the job. "The world is a clown show. Full production. Big tent. We are the circus, and I mean that in the most literal departmental sense possible."

"Some of us got into this job because we thought we'd be catching criminals," said Petrov, not looking up from whatever she was typing, the rhythm of her keystrokes suggesting she had been saying variations of this for long enough that it had become reflex. "Turns out the criminals had departments too. Better funded, arguably."

"You're talking about Griggs and Slate."

"I'm talking about the fact that our former deputy chief and our former chief of the entire Crestwood PD — the two human beings most structurally responsible for the institutional integrity of every badge in this building — turned out to be running Effexaine pipelines through half the supply infrastructure in this city." Drummond said it with the flat affect of a man who had processed his shock some time ago and was now operating purely on residual disbelief. "Cartel-adjacent. Documented. On record."

"And we found out because of a murder investigation," Petrov said. "Which is — when you sit with it — a genuinely special sentence."

"The Isley case." Drummond rubbed his face. "That unhinged kid stumbling into all of it by accident. The bodies he left behind basically drew a map that our own people had been paid not to draw."

"And then Blackwell." This from Okafor, the youngest of them, who had the particular energy of someone still in the phase of finding institutional corruption more horrifying than mundane. "The mayor. Murdered by the chief. On a secret camera. While they were — what — renegotiating terms? Dividing territory?"

"While they were having what appeared to be a business discussion, yes, and someone somewhere had installed a camera for reasons that remain officially unexplained, and now both of them are dead and the footage exists and none of us are supposed to talk about who it benefits that both of them are no longer able to answer questions." Drummond paused. "I ask again: clown show. Big tent."

"You know what I think?" Okafor dropped his voice a fraction, not enough to be subtle but enough to signal that he thought subtlety was appropriate. "Marcus. The Isley guy. The things he seems to know before he should know them. The things he's capable of that don't—" He searched for the word. "There's people online calling him a harbinger. Like some kind of chosen figure. I'm not saying I believe that, I'm just saying when you look at the pattern of what he's walked into and walked out of—"

"Oh, here we go."

"I'm being observational—"

"You're being a Veil Break listener is what you're being."

"I'm saying the pattern is unusual. I'm saying that if our own government wanted to examine unusual patterns, maybe they'd start closer to home." Okafor leaned forward. "Because the Halvern Consortium funded a significant portion of Blackwell's — let's call them *enterprises*. Publicly documented through their fundraiser organization. And Blackwell, before he was mayor, before any of this, was a chauffeur. Working for that family. Which means—"

"Which means someone needs to keep their voice down," Petrov said, with a new quality in her tone that wasn't quite warning and wasn't quite fear but sat somewhere in the geography between them. "Because the more you say those things out loud in a room with thin walls, the more you start sounding like—"

"Danny boy," Drummond said quietly.

The room went a degree cooler.

"Yeah." Petrov's keystroke rhythm had stopped. "Poor Danny. He didn't deserve that."

"Guy was just connecting dots." Okafor's voice had lost its argumentative energy. "Just saying what he was seeing. That those — those things, whatever you want to call them, those *appetite entities* — that they weren't just outside the institutions. That they were *in* them. Walking around in positions of authority and—"

Drummond did an impression — a wide-eyed, gesticulating mime of conspiratorial ranting — and a few people laughed, because laughing was what you did when the alternative was sitting with the fact that Danny had been right about several things and was now no longer available to be right about anything.

Nia had been listening to all of it with the expression of someone eating food they hadn't chosen from a menu they hadn't asked for. Her jaw was set at an angle that those who knew her recognized as the outward indicator of an inward response that was several layers deeper than what her face was showing. She didn't speak. She turned back to her notes and let the conversation carry on without her participation, because participating would have required her to say what she actually thought, and what she actually thought was not something the current temperature of the room was equipped to handle.

The door at the far end of the bureau swung open with the authority of someone who had decided somewhere in the corridor that they were done with the pace they'd been walking at.

Lieutenant Detective Caleb Saye moved through the room with the particular forward-leaning energy of a man who had received information recently and was still deciding what to do with his face about it. He was mid-forties, sharp through the eyes in the way that either indicated intelligence or the performance of it, and tonight the lines around his mouth were doing something that suggested the evening had not been gentle with him.

"Drummond." He pointed without slowing. "Turn on the screen. Channel seven. Now."

Drummond turned it on.

The WELB 7 logo appeared in the corner of a broadcast already in progress — the breaking news graphic pulsing with the electric urgency that news design departments deployed whenever something had gone structurally wrong in the city. The chyron at the bottom of the screen read in stark capital letters: **MAISON SALON EXPLOSION — EIGHTH FLOOR DESTRUCTION — LIVE COVERAGE.**

The aerial footage showed the building's upper section with a clarity that made the damage look almost deliberate in its specificity — which, Nia thought, it probably was. The structural damage was contained primarily to the top floor, but the radius of debris and the secondary impact on the surrounding block gave the footage the visual grammar of something considerably larger. Emergency vehicles clustered at the perimeter. Glass had reached the roofs of police units parked in the cordon below.

The anchor's voice carried the clipped, controlled urgency of someone delivering numbers they were still processing: twenty-three confirmed fatalities within the building prior to the detonation event. Law enforcement units on scene reporting — the word *ruthless* appeared in the coverage twice within ninety seconds, which was not an accident.

"Twenty-three," someone said.

No one else said anything for a moment.

Nia and Caleb looked at each other across the space of the room, and the look carried several simultaneous conversations, none of which were spoken aloud.

"Saye." This was Okafor, from his desk, staring at his phone screen with an expression of compressed alarm. "You might want to look at Vtube. Veil Break just dropped something — they're saying it's significant. Like, actually significant, not their usual—"

"Later—"

"They're saying they have documentation. Financial trails. Business registration records. Names attached to the Maison Salon's actual ownership structure." Okafor paused. "They're running it live."

The room shifted in the way rooms shift when information enters them that reorganizes the weight distribution of everyone in it.

Nia watched Caleb's face.

She had a talent for watching faces — not the performed parts, not the deliberate expressions that people managed for audiences, but the fraction of a second before management kicked in. The involuntary geography. The tells that arrived and departed before their owner had authorized the visit.

What she saw on Caleb Saye's face in the half-second after Okafor said ownership structure was not the reaction of a lieutenant detective processing a development in a case.

It was the reaction of a man calculating distance.

"If I'm not wrong, Mr. Saye," Nia said, keeping her voice at the conversational register she used when she wanted a question to sound casual and needed it not to, "isn't that the same establishment where you and your former partner allegedly ran several of your—"

She let the sentence end where it ended.

Caleb turned to look at her with the specific expression of a man who was deciding, in real time, how many of his options still existed.

He became aware, in the way that people become aware of these things, that several sets of eyes in the room had completed a slow drift in his direction without their owners having made a visible decision to redirect them. The awareness sat on him visibly.

His phone rang.

The sound of it in that particular silence had the quality of something that had been waiting for exactly this moment to announce itself.

He looked at the screen.

The number displayed was not one he recognized, but that was not what made his expression do what it did. What made his expression do what it did was the name that appeared beneath the number — a contact name that should not have been calling him, because the person attached to it was not currently in possession of a phone, or at least not one he knew about.

Aubrey.

He answered it.

"Caleb Saye." He had moved two steps away from the nearest desk, dropping his voice to the register of a man trying to have a private conversation in a room full of people trained to notice things.

The voice that came back through the speaker was Aubrey's. Exactly Aubrey's — the cadence, the particular way she shaped her vowels, the tone that sat just slightly to the left of what most people would call warm.

"Daddy." A pause that lasted long enough to be deliberate. "I'm hurt that you don't seem pleased to hear from me."

Caleb's jaw did something that was not a response to the words so much as to the entire architecture of the situation they represented.

"That's okay, though," the voice continued, carrying now a note of something that had been carefully arranged to sound like wounded sincerity. "You never told me, by the way. About Mummy. That she was a rotten apple." Another pause. "I'm quite sad about that, Daddy. I really am."

The color that departed Caleb Saye's face did so with conviction.

"It's not funny, Marcus." The words came out low and controlled and containing approximately eight different categories of anger compressed into a single sentence. "Whatever game you think you're playing — whatever you think this achieves — you need to understand that I will personally—"

"I left you a little present," the Aubrey-voice said, in the tone of someone delivering genuinely good news to someone who does not yet know it is good news. "Don't worry about the parts that trace back to you. For now, I won't reveal them." The warmth in the voice dropped exactly one degree. "Well. That's if you don't make me any sadder than I already am, Daddy."

The call ended.

Not disconnected. Deleted — the log clearing itself from the screen with the quiet efficiency of something that had never intended to leave a record of its own existence.

Caleb Saye stood holding his phone in a room full of detectives, and the silence around him had the specific texture of people who were professionally trained to notice when someone was holding something they shouldn't be.
