Chapter 60 - Chapter 60: The Cost of Staying Close

Rea adjusted.

Not because she wanted to.

Because she had to.

The man in front of her didn't fight like an enemy.

He corrected.

Every movement she made, every strike, every shift in rhythm—it was as if he had already seen it before it happened.

Not prediction.

Recognition.

She exhaled slowly.

Then—

She stopped attacking.

The shift was immediate.

The man tilted his head slightly.

"...You're changing your approach."

Rea didn't answer.

Instead, she stepped back.

Lowered her blade.

Just slightly.

The corridor around them fell into a strange stillness.

The other figures—the Custodians—remained where they were, watching.

Always watching.

"You adapt faster than projected," the man continued.

Rea's eyes didn't leave him.

"You talk too much."

But she didn't attack again.

Not yet.

Because now she understood.

This wasn't about overpowering him.

It was about breaking his pattern.

"You're not trying to kill me," she said.

The man didn't deny it.

"No," he replied. "You're not the priority."

That landed.

Rea's grip tightened.

"Thomas."

"Yes."

Her eyes darkened.

"You're in my way."

The man stepped aside.

Just like that.

Rea froze.

Not from force.

From confusion.

"You're letting me pass," she said.

The man met her gaze.

"We don't need to stop you," he replied. "You'll lead us where we need to go."

Silence.

Then—

Understanding.

Rea's expression shifted.

"You're using me."

"Yes."

No hesitation.

No deception.

That was enough.

Rea moved again.

Not forward.

Backward.

Breaking line of sight.

Breaking trajectory.

Breaking expectation.

For the first time—

The man didn't follow immediately.

"…Interesting," he murmured.

Back in the chamber—

Thomas felt it.

A sharp spike in the system.

Rea.

Moving.

But not toward him.

Away.

His chest tightened.

"She's not coming back," he said quietly.

Nyx watched him carefully.

"No," she said. "She's thinking."

That didn't make it better.

"She's alone," Thomas added.

Nyx's expression didn't change.

"She chose that."

Thomas turned toward her.

"That doesn't mean she has to stay that way."

Nyx stepped closer.

"You can't save everyone," she said.

"I'm not trying to."

"Then what are you doing?"

Thomas hesitated.

Then—

"I'm trying not to lose everything."

Nyx studied him.

Longer this time.

Deeper.

"You already lost something," she said quietly.

That hit.

He didn't respond.

Because she was right.

The system pulsed again.

Stronger now.

More stable.

Thomas felt it open.

Not pulling him this time.

Inviting him.

"I can track them," he said.

Nyx's eyes sharpened.

"The Custodians?"

He nodded.

"And Hale," he added.

Nyx stepped closer again.

Too close.

"That's not tracking," she said. "That's integration."

Thomas didn't move away.

"I need to know where they are."

"And they'll know where you are."

Silence.

The distance between them vanished.

Again.

This time—

Neither of them stepped back.

"You're going to do it anyway," Nyx said softly.

"Yes."

She watched him.

Really watched him.

Then—

Her hand lifted again.

This time—

Not tentative.

She placed it against his chest.

Directly over his heartbeat.

"You're accelerating," she said quietly.

Thomas's breath slowed.

"I know."

Her fingers pressed slightly.

Not force.

Not control.

Awareness.

"You're not just reacting anymore," she continued. "You're choosing the system."

He met her gaze.

"I'm choosing what it gives me."

Nyx's lips curved faintly.

"That's the same thing."

The air shifted.

The tension changed.

Not confrontation.

Not manipulation.

Something more dangerous.

Mutual.

"You're not trying to stop me," he said.

Nyx didn't look away.

"No."

"Why?"

A pause.

Then—

"Because I want to see how far you go."

That honesty—

Was worse than lies.

Thomas exhaled slowly.

"You're not afraid of what I'll become."

Nyx's expression softened.

Just slightly.

"No," she said.

Another pause.

"Are you?"

The question hung between them.

Close.

Too close.

Thomas didn't answer.

Because the truth—

Was complicated.

The system activated again.

This time—

He didn't resist.

He stepped onto the platform willingly.

Rea felt it instantly.

Far away.

Her body tensed.

"No," she whispered.

Back in the chamber—

Light surged.

"Expanded interface access granted."

Thomas's vision fractured again—but this time, he stayed standing.

Stable.

Controlled.

Nyx watched carefully.

"…You're synchronizing faster," she said.

Thomas didn't respond.

Because he was already inside it.

The world opened.

Not just the city.

Not just the systems.

Everything connected to it.

Hale's networks.

The Custodians' interference patterns.

Rea's position.

He saw her.

Moving.

Alone.

His chest tightened—

But he didn't pull away.

Not this time.

"Target convergence detected," the system said.

Nyx frowned.

"What does that mean?"

Thomas's voice came out distant.

"They're all moving toward one point."

"Where?"

A pause.

Then—

"Here."

Silence.

Heavy.

Nyx exhaled slowly.

"Of course they are."

Thomas turned his head slightly.

"I can move it."

Nyx's eyes narrowed.

"The node?"

He nodded.

"Shift its position. Relocate the access point."

Nyx's mind raced.

"That would buy time," she said.

"And split them," Thomas added.

But there was something else.

A cost.

Nyx saw it immediately.

"What does it take?" she asked.

Thomas didn't answer right away.

Because he knew.

When he finally spoke—

"More than before."

Nyx stepped closer again.

Close enough to feel the heat of him.

The tension.

The change.

"Then don't do it," she said.

That stopped him.

Because it wasn't logical.

It wasn't strategic.

It was—

Different.

"You said—"

"I know what I said," she interrupted.

Her voice dropped.

"But this isn't about the system anymore."

Her hand moved again—

This time—

Not to his chest.

To his face.

Light.

Brief.

But real.

"You're still human," she said quietly. "Don't trade that too quickly."

Silence.

For a moment—

Everything else disappeared.

Then—

The system pulsed again.

And the moment broke.

Thomas made his decision.

"I'm doing it."

Nyx closed her eyes briefly.

"…Of course you are."
