Evelyn Lee slowly turned her head, her innocent eyes filled with fear and unease, and whispered:
"Sister Stanton…"
Eleanor Lee pulled out a clean chair and patted the seat a few times with her palm, "Lawyer Stanton, please sit."
"Thank you." Serena Stanton took her seat.
"You two talk, I'll go check the stew on the stove."
Eleanor Lee watched them for a moment, then left with a gentle smile.
"Evelyn, doing your math homework? That's wonderful." Serena glanced at the open workbook on the table, her voice soft and gentle, as if coaxing a child. "Are the questions hard?"
Evelyn Lee shook her head, voice barely audible: "Not really."
Serena smiled, her eyes crinkling, "Not hard, huh? Looks like our Evelyn is a bright little girl."
Evelyn lowered her head, brows tightly furrowed, her small hands twisting anxiously together, visibly conflicted.
"What's wrong?" Serena asked patiently and gently, "Have you been troubled by something lately?"
