Chapter 14 - Chapter 12: Tempestuous Upheaval

The changes to the impact wall are even more astonishing than the previous spiked floor!

Su Lin suppressed his inner joy, maintaining a facade of "ignorant bewilderment," even showing a bit of helpless panic.

He scratched his head, looking at Su Tongxi, who was so shocked she couldn't close her mouth, speaking with a touch of uncertainty:

"Isn't this... this wall growing a bit... too impatient? And covered with spikes?"

Upon hearing this, Su Tongxi snapped back to reality, her petite throat moved difficulty.

She looked up, gazing at the wall occupying nearly the entire space, solidifying at a visibly fast speed, covered with menacing iron spikes, her almond-shaped eyes widened, filled with shock and great confusion.

Could Brother Kirin really be exceptionally gifted?

With this thought, Su Tongxi tightly covered her rising and falling chest, and a light of joyful surprise instantly shone in her eyes!

If that's true, it's simply a heavenly blessing!

But for something like this...

"Brother Kirin!" she shouted urgently, her tone carrying an unprecedented sense of urgency, "Quickly activate the daily disguise mode of the safe house! Don't let others find out... about your special talent!"

Su Lin was stunned, did this little blockhead really believe it?

But well, it saved him a lot of effort explaining.

He immediately followed up, asking, "Daily mode? How do you do it?"

He genuinely didn't know this.

"Just communicate with the house title deed through your mind," Su Tongxi explained quickly, "Once activated, all mechanisms will be hidden."

"Oh oh, got it." Su Lin followed her instructions, slightly adjusting his thoughts.

In this isolated village, the safe houses of each family are quite far apart, originally designed to disperse risk during the terrifying "Night of Survival".

At this moment, dusk had passed, darkness covered the surroundings, every household had their doors and windows tightly shut, no one noticed the anomaly in front of the Su family's door.

With the activation of the daily disguise mode, in Su Lin and Su Tongxi's vision, the two already physical scary mechanisms instantly turned into looming shadows.

Su Lin glanced at the remaining materials in the house, again communicated with the house title deed.

Symmetrically positioned on the right side of the door, he began constructing the second impact wall without hesitation.

The anomaly reappeared!

Between the flow of light, the right-sided wall was also covered by a rapidly expanding giant impact wall, densely packed with fierce iron spikes!

Two massive walls angled toward the doorway, with countless tips flashing coldly, akin to the fangs and teeth of a lurking giant beast, waiting quietly to tear and knock away any intruders!

The pitiful three 1x1 small mechanisms originally planned, had now transformed into:

A carpet full of intimidating spiked nails covering five meters in length and two meters in width at the front of the door!

Two massive impact walls filled with deadly iron spikes occupying almost the entire walls inside the door!

The materials Su Tongxi previously painstakingly broke down had now been completely consumed.

Looking at the formidable defense stance akin to a copper wall and iron bastion, Su Lin's heart raced wildly.

This "King of the Garbage Can" entry, its effect is simply outrageous!

Is this picking up garbage? Clearly, it's turning stone into gold, transforming rot into divine weapons!

"Bro-Brother Kirin..."

Su Tongxi stood behind Su Lin, her small hand still covering her chest, her voice trembling slightly, looking at the alarming spikes and impact walls, her eyes intertwined with great relief.

The sense of security these mechanisms brought was just too adequate.

"Looks quite intimidating," Su Lin shrugged, feigning calmness though his heart was pounding, "just not sure how effective they are."

Looking so mighty, it should easily fend off tonight's monsters, right?

He pointed at the earth spike: "Does this thing have a switch? How to activate?"

"There's no switch," Su Tongxi shook her head lightly, slightly biting her lip, twisting her fingertips on her clothes unconsciously, "All mechanisms in the safe house, the homeowner only needs to communicate with the house title deed, and can control the switch with thoughts."

Su Lin examined the three faint shadows under the daily disguise mode and nodded:

"Alright. Let's keep it this way for now and get to it when the monsters come."

...

The sun sank, night descended

The temperature plummeted, the evening wind carried the unique earthy smell and biting cold of the wild as it whistled through the silent village.

Dinnertime.

Su Tongxi brought out the cooked porridge.

The two sat closely together.

Su Lin stirred the thick porridge with his chopsticks.

Though the braised pork was mushy, without the flavor of the braised pork, this simple vegetable porridge seemed even blander.

The tension of the night combined with the pickiness toward food made him lose appetite.

Seeing him in this state, Su Tongxi extended a white, delicate hand, with a cool slippery touch, gently caressed Su Lin's face. Her fingertips brushed over his tightly knit brow as if trying to wipe away the displeasure.

"Brother Kirin, this is all we have right now."

Her voice soft and soothing, with a hint of comfort: "Tomorrow I'll make more bullets to sell, definitely getting you something tasty. Tonight... endure a bit, eat more, okay?"

She worried that Su Lin might lack the stamina to withstand the impending danger.

"Get something tasty tomorrow?"

Su Lin forced out a smile, his gaze falling on her pure and charming face, "Isn't there a 'good dish' ready right here?"

"Hmm?" Su Tongxi was taken aback, her reaction delayed, as a shadow enveloped her sight.

The next moment, her cherry lips were sealed.

Su Tongxi was caught off guard, her wide-open and teary eyes filled with disbelief.

With lips parted, Su Lin licked his lips, a mischievous smile spread across his face:

"Fragrant! Sweet! Now my appetite is truly whetted, why wait for tomorrow or the next day?"

Savoring the lingering taste of the beauty's kiss, he defiantly stiffened his neck and forced down three bowls of porridge, his throat painfully scraped.

Meanwhile, at the Su Family's Old Mansion.

Around the Eight Immortals Table, four generations sat together, but only one from each generation remained.

The youngest, Su Yingying, held her small, exclusive bowl, eating noisily, carefree and innocent.

Zhao Yaxin occasionally reached out to wipe the little glutton's mouth, a subtle warmth flowing from her cold eyes.

Su Qi and Su Can, this father and son duo, sat with identical postures, focused on eating, silently chewing, the table's atmosphere heavy and solemn.

Su Qi took the only piece of meat from his bowl and placed it in his granddaughter's bowl.

Su Yingying raised her little face, beaming: "Thank you, Grandpa!"

Su Qi's lips curled slightly, as he retracted his chopsticks, his brow suddenly furrowed tightly, abruptly lowering his head.

Next—

"Cough, cough, cough—!"

A violent cough shattered the table's silence.

Zhao Yaxin was startled, quickly stood up to support him: "Dad!"

Her eyes filled with deep worry.

Su Yingying also cried out urgently: "Grandpa!"

Su Can's face darkened: "Old injury... acting up again?"

Su Qi's coughing gradually ceased, but he couldn't respond.

Only his face reddened as if blood-filled, neck veins bulged prominently, teeth clenched audibly, drawing sharp breaths through clenched teeth, his limbs shaking uncontrollably.

Su Can's old brow twisted into knots, knowing his son suffered from recurring injuries, hurriedly stepped forward, and took over from his granddaughter-in-law, his strong arm quickly lifting Su Qi's rigid, shaking body, rushing him upstairs to the room.

When the old man settled him on the bed, Su Qi abruptly opened his eyes!

His eyes bloodshot and terrifyingly red!

His lips parted, revealing tightly clenched jaws and terrifyingly white teeth, his face contorted and twisted, drool uncontrollably dribbling from the corners of his mouth.

"...Dad..." He endured the searing pain spreading from his bone marrow throughout his body, his voice muffled and hoarse.

Su Can maintained a stern face: "What for?"

"...Lin... you... go..."

Su Qi's neck veins threatened to burst, eyes bulging, words squeezed out through gritted teeth.

"Rest your nonsense!"

The old man's steel-like mustache trembled violently as he shouted angrily: "He's old enough! He should take responsibility for himself!"

"You!! Go!!" Su Qi growled, seemingly using the last bit of his strength, his body shaking even more.

"Rest your nonsense!"

The father-son confrontation ended with the old man storming out of the room furiously.

Outside the door, Zhao Yaxin stood with the anxious Su Yingying by the stairs.

"Grandpa..." Zhao Yaxin lightly bit her lips, hesitating to call out.

Su Yingying, on the verge of tears: "Great-grandpa! Is Grandpa in pain again? Can Yingying go blow on it for Grandpa to feel better?"

Su Can's white mustache trembled suddenly, the expression in his tiger-like eyes instantly frozen.

A heavy silence quickly enveloped the corridor.

Zhao Yaxin lowered her gaze, her bangs hiding the emotions in her eyes.

Though Su Yingying was young, she had quickly learned to read people's expressions in the end times.

She glanced at her grandpa and mom's expressions, not understanding why the adults suddenly turned so strange, but she nervously closed her mouth, reddened her eyes, and hugged her mom's leg tightly.

"Go down and eat." The old man's voice dry and harsh, "Tonight... I'll keep watch. Take care of the child, don't worry."

"...Okay." Zhao Yaxin seemed relieved, quickly picked up her daughter and hurried downstairs.

Su Can silently walked to the balcony in the corridor, leaning on the railing, looking into the distance.

The night was like ink, with a deep chill.

He himself was poisoned.

The eldest couple died trying to distract the monster lord, no remains were found on the Night of Survival.

The second child's old injuries frequently acted up, growing heavier.

Tonight, he, with his aging body, guarded this precarious family, old, young, sick, and frail…

"Su Lin..."

The old man closed his bloodshot old eyes, his throat moved, his voice so low it was almost a mutter:

"If you've truly matured even a little... tonight... survive for the Su Family!"
