Chapter 21 - CHAPTER TWENTY-ONE — AFTER THE GUNFIRE

Morning arrived still, as if the megacity itself were holding its breath.

Daniel sat on the edge of the sanitarium bed, elbows on his knees, gaping at the scuffed white bottom. Aisha slept beside him in a plastic president, her head resting against the wall, prostration eventually winning.

Enchantresses no longer screamed outdoors. The chaos had passed — but its echoes refused to fade.

The verity was far and wide now.

defenses in the waiting room replayed the footage on a circle blurted documents, audio lines, fiscal trails that all refocused to Marcus. Captions called it one of the largest corruption exposés the megacity had ever seen. Names fell like dominoes. Power atrophied presto when dragged into the light.

Yet one name was missing.

Kieran.

Daniel rose when steps approached. A operative stopped a many bases down, his expression undecipherable.

" You're Daniel, " he said. " I need to speak with you. "

Aisha stirred, incontinently awake. " Is this about him? "

The operative jounced. " Marcus was restrained. Alive. " He broke. " Your friend made sure of that. "

Daniel's casket tensed. " Where is Kieran? "

" He was hit again during the battle. Lost a lot of blood. " Another pause — longer this time. " He's in surgery. "

Hope flitted, fragile and hysterical .

Hours crawled by. The sun climbed advanced, light discovering through the windows, illuminating a world that felt recently exposed — raw and enduring. Daniel replayed everything in his mind the chase, the rope, the gunfire, the way Kieran stepped forward without vacillation.

Eventually, a croaker surfaced.

" He's stable, " she said. " It was close. But he pulled through. "

Aisha covered her mouth, gashes discovering freely. Daniel exhaled shakily, his knees nearly giving out.

latterly, they stood by Kieran's bedside. He looked lower ever, stripped of his armor, machines humming vocally around him. His eyes fluttered open.

" Took you long enough, " he muttered hoarsely.

Daniel let out a broken laugh. " You're unthinkable. "

Kieran's aspect shifted to Aisha. " Did it work "

She jounced. " The verity's out. All of it. "

A faint smile touched his lips. " also it was worth it. "

But relief did n't last.

A week latterly, Daniel entered an translated communication — from an unknown sender.

You exposed the face. Not the source.

Marcus was a pawn.

still, stop digging intimately, If you want the whole verity.

This was your only warning.

Daniel goggled at the screen, cold settling deep in his bones.

Across the room, Aisha watched him precisely. " What's it? "

He locked the phone.

" Nothing, " he prevaricated.

Outside, the megacity moved on — believing the story was over.

It was n't.

The chase had ended.

But the war for verity had only just begun.
