The maintenance hallway was narrow, dim, and smelled faintly of metal and damp concrete. Aisha's footsteps echoed too loudly, as if the walls themselves were listening. Daniel kept her close, guiding her deeper into the maze of back corridors beneath the station.
Aisha's voice trembled. "Daniel… how long until they find this way?"
"Not long," he said. "They know every exit. Every blind spot."
"So where are we going?"
"To the one place they won't follow."
That didn't comfort her—if anything, it terrified her more.
Behind them, a distant clang echoed through the metal passage. Aisha flinched.
Daniel stopped abruptly, listening.
Another clang. Closer.
"They're splitting up," he muttered. "Trying to corner us."
Aisha's heart pounded against her ribs. "Then why are we going further in?"
"Because going back is worse."
He wasn't lying. His voice wasn't just urgent—it was afraid. Not for himself. For her.
They reached a locked steel door. Daniel crouched quickly, pulling a thin tool from his pocket.
Aisha blinked. "Why do you even know how to do that?"
"Later," he said. "Promise."
The lock clicked.
Daniel grabbed her hand. "Stay low."
They slipped through, entering a wide underground tunnel that stretched into darkness. Old pipes lined the ceiling. Warning signs covered the walls. The hum of distant machinery vibrated under their feet.
Aisha stepped closer to him instinctively. "What is this place?"
"A service tunnel. Cameras don't reach here."
"That's good, right?"
Daniel didn't answer.
Then—
Footsteps.
Fast. Coordinated. Coming from the direction they just left.
Aisha's breath hitched. "They're here—"
Daniel grabbed her waist and pulled her behind a massive pipe as shadows swarmed the corridor.
Three of them.
Moving silently.
Searching.
Aisha clamped a hand over her mouth, her heartbeat loud enough to betray them.
Daniel leaned in, whispering in the faintest breath: "If they look down this row, run. Don't wait for me."
Her eyes filled with fear. "No. I'm not leaving you."
"You may not have a choice."
One of the hooded figures stopped.
Turned.
Looked straight toward the pipe they were hiding behind.
Aisha's lungs froze.
The figure stepped closer—one slow step at a time.
Closer.
Closer.
Daniel shifted, ready to launch himself forward if needed.
Aisha closed her eyes.
Then—
A loud alarm blared from somewhere above, echoing through the tunnels. A siren. Sharp. Unexpected.
All three figures snapped their heads toward the sound.
They exchanged a silent signal—
and sprinted deeper into the station.
Daniel exhaled shakily. "That wasn't me."
Aisha opened her eyes. "Then who—?"
Before she could finish, a soft click echoed behind them.
A flashlight switched on.
A silhouette stood at the far end of the tunnel—not hooded, not part of the group.
A stranger.
"Daniel," the voice said, calm but urgent, "we need to talk. Now."
Daniel froze.
Aisha stepped closer to him. "Do you know him?"
Daniel's silence was answer enough.
