The moment Serena heard I was taking her to make fireworks, she bobbed her head enthusiastically.
"Yes, yes, yes! Thank you, Aunt! You're absolutely the best!"
Seeing her bubbling with joy, I ran my fingers through her soft hair, though my thoughts wandered unbidden to Romano's face.
A familiar ache twisted in my chest.
Romano only ever wore that radiant, unguarded smile for Lorelei. With me, all I got were scowls and irritation.
Perhaps my departure would be his salvation. No more lectures, no more meals he despised, no more seeking my approval for anything.
The following morning.
Serena was up before dawn, practically vibrating with anticipation. I could tell she was dying to rush to the fireworks factory and watch the magic happen, but the sweet girl held back. Instead, she perched on the couch, waiting patiently.
