"And as for this bitter old woman," Kolton's voice turned glacial, "I'd suggest you remind her to show Jenifer some basic decency. I can't guarantee my courtesy will last if there's a next time."
His opinion of the Gould family had already soured because of Reed. After Eliza's outburst, that contempt crystallized into outright animosity.
Callan's face grew stormy. He cast a sharp warning look at his wife before facing me.
"Jenifer, we had no idea you were connected to the Zach family."
Before I could answer, Kolton cut in with razor-sharp precision. "And why should she? Must she file a report about her relationships with you? Just because she married into your family doesn't mean you control every aspect of her life."
Feeling the atmosphere grow more volatile, I grabbed Kolton's sleeve.
"Mr. Gould, Romano remains unconscious," I said steadily.
