Lilian's POV
The phone screen glowed with his name, and my fingers trembled as they clutched the device. My knuckles had gone white from the pressure.
Since Rosie's hospitalization, I had tried reaching him multiple times. Every call went unanswered. Now he was calling me back, probably because he had discovered my departure. He would demand explanations, justifications for abandoning him.
Yet he was the one who declared he never wanted to see my face again. My absence should have been exactly what he desired.
My thoughts spiraled into chaos, but somewhere deep inside, a pathetic spark of hope flickered to life.
Before rational thought could intervene, my thumb swept across the screen to accept the call.
The connection opened. His breathing filled the silence between us, while my heart hammered violently against my chest. Words escaped me completely.
Several heartbeats passed before he shattered the quiet.
