Chapter 21 - Interlude: A World of War Part 1

[ Location: Nazi Germany ]

[ Date: January 27, 1945 ]

[ Third Person POV ]

An army jeep approached the entrance of a forward operating base that had been established not too far from the front lines. In the back a blonde-haired man in an odd collage of a military uniform and a brightly colored outfit of red, white, and blue.

Steve Rodger's had been all over Europe by this point. He'd fought against injustice wherever he found it and his howling commandos had gone head-to-head against some of the worst of humanity had to offer and prevailed all the same.

What Steve had never expected though was to be hunting a Greek god alongside an Amazon, two Canadian men with bone claws, the woman he loved, and his best friend.

"Yo Steve we got an answer from headquarters," Bucky called from the driver's seat. Bucky aka Jain Brooklyn Barnes had been Steve's best friend ever since they were little. The two of them had been together through thick and thin, and even when the war started, they had promised to enlist together.

Even though female soldiers in the military had been widely uncommon it wasn't unheard of and Jain had been a shoo-in for exactly what the military had been looking for in a woman.

Steve had been stuck deep in his own thoughts as the group had approached their current camp.

"And?" Steve looked up with a smirk.

"They said they wonder girl and her team will be joining us for this one."

The howling commandos all cheered as the transport truck came to a rattling stop as the group approached the current camp gates.

"Alright boys and girls this one's a quick opp so only the supes are going in with us," The boys immediately started groaning in protest but he just chuckled.

A few hours later Steve stepped into the command tent.

"Steve." General 'Happy' Sam Sawyer greeted him as he entered.

"General I hear we have an important mission," Steve said but instead of Sam a voice to his right.

"You've heard right Steve," The two of them were joined by his fellow super soldier, Captain Carter formerly Agent Peggy Carter, or as she was now more commonly known, Captain Britain.

[ Insert image of Captain Carter here ]

The two of them had been chosen by Dr Abraham Erskine for the Super Soldier program for different reasons but the results had been the same. While Steve was the one meant to be a true super soldier. Peggy had been chosen to examine the effects of the super soldier serum on women.

Many in command saw the fact that by sheer numbers female soldiers were far less common than men and as a result, they hadn't wanted to waste the resources on making a female super soldier.

Erskine however insisted on doing trials for birth to make sure both genders would have the same results just in case. So the program recruited several candidates and Agent Carter had just barely beaten out Bucky as the chosen female candidate.

However, as soon as the experiment to transform them was finished two Hydra agents had infiltrated the facility to take the serum and the blood samples that were extracted from both of them.

After that, they killed Erskine and attempted to escape with both samples but only the Hydra agent with the blood managed to get away.

They'd been able to stop the one with the serum samples but the agent with the blood samples had gotten away. Ever since then the two of them had been working together in all sorts of different capacities.

"The lady is right Steve and not to mention this is gonna be a hard and fast hit. We'll be meeting up with the wonder broad and her pals on the plane there," Another man, Howard Stark aka the Hydra Stomper said from the opposite side of the general putting a friendly arm around his soldier.

[ insert image of Hydra Stomper here ]

Howard Stark had been assigned to the strategic scientific reserve in order to aid in the creation of the super soldier program after his own work had hit a wall. After Dr Erskine's death though a fire had been lit in him and Howard had finally managed to climb over that metaphorical wall and helped him finish the creation of the Hydra stomper armor suit. Unfortunately for the government, though they didn't have the rights nor the blueprint to build more of them and Howard stubbornly refused to give it to them.

So when Howard had volunteered to join Steve's newly specialized team of commandos at the very least the government and the military couldn't object to that.

Soon enough after Howard had joined the two superhumans in their endeavors the commandos had been clearing out Hydra bases at a record speed like never before. Now he was even joining them on specialized missions like this one.

"Will Hank and Janet be joining us for this one as well?" Steve asked staring down at the table in front of him. Atop the surface was a sprawling map of Europe marking multiple war fronts and Hydra bases.

"Unfortunately no. They won't be able to get here in time for that. Now shut up and let me give you all the rundown," General Sam said, and just like that the real meeting began.

"Today we're liberating a Hydra-controlled experimentation camp called Auschwitz," The room gre grimmer at his words. They'd all seen and heard the type of horrific things both the nazi's and Hydra were doing in their wicked camps, but if this one was specifically for experimentation then nothing boded well for them.

"From what we know the camp is being run by one man going by the alias of the black king. From what we know he's not a member of Hydra so much as he is cooperating with them on supe experimentation," Sam explained his tone filling with distaste at the idea of humans being used as lab rats.

"What exactly have they been doing there?" Steve stepped forward narrowing his gaze on the map where Auschwitz stood.

"From what we know they've been gathering up any natural-born super and their families as well as a sample population. From what we can tell their hoping to find a way to mass-produce artificial supes to turn the tide of the war," Sam said, then walking over to a desk off to the side Sam pulled out a file and dropped it onto the table. Flipping it open to reveal an aerial image of the camp.

"From what we know there will be at least a few supers from the other side there but we don't know which. More than that we have reason to believe that Overman will be there." The whole team grimaced at that. Overman aka Ubermensch or as the boys in camp liked to call him Captain Nazi.

The blonde bastard was the pride and joy of the Third Reich. Despite him being a raging, crazy-asshole, Albrecht Krieger was the semi-successful result of a nazi space program headed by his own father that had him use a rocket to approach a meteor that was orbiting Earth for millennia. That same meteor had been constantly emitting cosmic radiation which affected Albrecht and gave him remarkable powers.

The only negative aftereffect seemed to be that it caused Overman to continuously mentally deteriorate into a raging berserker. Steve hadn't encountered the man on the battlefield yet but from the many horror stories he wasn't exactly eager to do so.

The stories had been just as bad as what Steve had heard of this Black Adam head heard was tearing up anyone who tried something with Kahndaq on the Middle Eastern front of the war. Still getting fried to death by lightning from the isolationist despot or torn apart by the bare hands of a super Nazi.

Well… Steve considered both to be rather bad options.

As the meeting continued and the group discussed a plan of attack Steve kept wondering if their team would be good enough to counter the enemy with so many unknown factors. He did know this though, the longer that he waited to face him the more people would get hurt.

.

.

.

A few hours later the sun had already gone down and the plane to get to their destination was ready and waiting. Steve hopped out of another jeep alongside Peggy and landed on an airstrip. Running up the ramp first, he was met by the sight of the full team for this operation.

"Captain Rogers, it's good to see you again. I've brought a few more heavy hitters to join but sadly Hourman couldn't join us," The first to greet him was Wonder Woman. He and Diana had met before on her hunt for Ares and had crossed paths a few more times during the war.

"It's good to see you too Diana," Steve said shaking her hand and taking his seat aboard the plane. Three other people sat on his side of the plane while another group sat across from him. To Steve, it seemed like he and his crew were the last to get here.

"And you Captain Carter." Diana nodded to Peggy and quickly to her hand as well. The two women had shared a level of mutual respect and for Diana finding a strong fellow female warrior in a man's world had reminded her of home and her sisters.

"Good to see you as well Diana," Peggy nodded her head politely before taking her seat beside Steve. Across from them an already seated Howard Stark sipped wine from a canteen. Beside him, two wild-looking men sat with two completely different demeanors. By the wall to the cockpit, another man stood leaning against it, his eyes covered by dark aviator glasses. He nodded at Steve with respect and the captain nodded back.

"What took you two so long? Having fun on your way from the meeting," He said, wiggling his eyebrows at the two super soldiers. Peggy just rolled her eyes while Steve closed his eyes and chuckled. Beside him, the Hydra Stomper suit stood deactivated and tied down waiting for Howard to climb inside it.

"Sorry Stark but not everyone can fly to the plane," Steve said as Diana sat down on his other side, and as the plane took off the pilot started speaking from the intercom. Next to her the Doctor Fate meditated silently as he floated above the seat between her and two other heroes. The Doctor remained completely silent and Steve raised an eyebrow and glanced at Peggy who returned his confused gaze when they saw him but ultimately the two just ignored the seemingly harmless magician.

"Ha speak for yourself," Another man this time in bright red and green spoke up. Contrary to the golden lord of order the emerald peacekeeper was quite the talker though in his opinion not as much as his speedster best friend.

"Here here!," A woman in a strange-looking Hawk costume said spinning a mace around casually. Beside her, another man in Hawk costume simply crossed his arms and huffed as Steve looked to him.

The two smirked at each other as Shiera adjusted to get more comfortable in her seat.

"Captains Britain and America charmed to meet you," Peggy said smiling at the duo.

"Hawkman and Hawkgirl," The two introduced themselves simultaneously as the cabin door closed and the internal lights flickered on. The engine began to warm up as one of the others spoke up.

"Nice blade you've got there," Sheira said nodding at the sword in Peggy's hip. It was meant to be paired with Steve's shield when the two were first crafted but the two items ended up getting split between both of them.

Peggy was already experienced in blade combat from fencing to a few other kinds of swords and of course knives. Meanwhile, Steve had proven himself far more than just a natural with the shield but a true prodigy. Even when Peggy had practiced wth it should could never quite match his prowess with it. She was too far outmatched by Steve when it came to swordsmanship and her prior experience only strengthened that notion.

"I'm much more of a mace woman myself though," Sheira said lifting her Nth metal weapon and tapping it twice on the steel floor.

"What about you Diana?" The redhead asked the Amazon tilting her hawk-themed helmet at her fellow hero. The Amazon smiled, pondering the question for a moment before answering.

"I have been trained in the use of many weapons. Though if I had to pick one I am partial to the sword as well," She said unsheathing her own blade at her hip.

"Albeit I prefer to pair that blade with a shield of my own," She said tilting her body to display the shining Amazonium shield attached to her back.

"And if you had to choose between them?" Peggy asked calmly rubbing soothing circles on the pommel of her own blade.

"Well they do say that the best offense is a good defence," Steve spoke up raising his shield with a smile. Peggy rolled her eyes with a soft groan of exasperation, lightly shoving an arm against Steve's shield playfully.

"Many would agree with your assessment friend Rodgers," Diana said resheathing her own blade.

"Why bother with swords and shields when you can have good old-fashioned firepower!" The man on Diana's other side spoke up as a shimmering green construct of a glowing gun manifested in front of him. A few of the others in the cabin let out different noises of surprise at the man's ability but most said nothing as the construct resolved into thin air.

"Now that! I can drink to!" Howard cheered draining the rest of his canteen, casting it to the side, and swiftly pulling out another one to replace it.

"Maybe you should slow down buddy, we're on the clock. Unless you're scared or something?" A man in an odd red costume next to his green companion spoke up.

"Call it liquid courage if you need to but I refuse to die sober," The inventor said swiftly downing another gulp.

"Your arms tricks and potions mean nothing before the might of magic," Fate said finally speaking for himself.

"I wouldn't say all that Dr." The blonde man dressed in green said before turning to fade the flag-wearing duo.

"Green Lantern nice to finally meet you, Captains, my friends with the feathers and I flew our way over here," The man in green said nodding at Steve since he was too far for a handshake.

"Lucky you, some of us have to use our feet," Another man said, this time brightly dressed in red and yellow with an odd metal bucket hat with two lightning bolts on his head.

[ insert image of The Flash Jay Garrick here ]

"The Flash your Captain America right and Captain Britain too," He smiled and Peggy responded politely. Then Jay looked over to the two wild-looking men and smiled.

"Don't bother with those two over there though. Canadian black ops or so I've heard their brothers actually," He said flicking the hat on his head.

"Grrr watch your mouth bub or I'll cut it off," One of the two brothers said, hands balled into a fist. Flash drew up his hands in a feigned surrender.

"Hmph," next to them Hawkgirl and Hawkman both suppressed simultaneous laughs as the two brothers responded with another growl. After a few moments the plane took off and they all grew silent until a voice came in over the intercom 30 minutes later.

-["Alright everyone we're almost there so let's get to it. The name's Steve Trevor by the way I'll be the main pilot and Howard here is my backup."]-

The slightly intoxicated man raised his canteen with trademark charming smile and lifted it back to his lips. Cap and Peggy exchanged slightly worried glances.

"Don't worry, I fly my best with a little alcohol in my system," Hayward said with a laugh drinking even more from the flask and patting a fist against the stomper suit. The others laughed too and soon enough the main conversation died and they paired off for smaller talk.

Steve and Peggy kept to themselves while Diana and Fate seemed content to remain silent. The couple of continuously reincarnating Hawk people spoke with each other while the Canadian duo spoke only to each other and rarely at that. Meanwhile the Flash and the Lantern both casually spoke and joked around with each other.

-[We'll arrive in thirty minutes so brace yourselves for some rough air soon. You all have been chosen for this mission because you're special in one way or another. More than that you all need to act as quickly as possible to get this mission done right]-

"How quickly exactly?" Steve shouted the question as the aforementioned turbulence began. The group started hearing the explosions starting outside and the cabin lights going red. The entire team readied themselves.

-["Think of it this way."]- Trevor said jovially as the bay door reopened. Outside missile strikes and bullet trails filled the air as the song of several torrents attempting to shoot down not just them but several other allied planes could be seen, felt, and heard.

-[ "You don't get parashoots,"]-

One by one the ragtag team of misfits and mutants all stood up from their seats and suited up for what would be one of the most difficult battles they'd seen yet.

XXX

I wrote this interlude because I was thinking about how interesting the world war 2 period of this world must have been. It would have been super interesting to do a fic based on this time period with a mix of worlds but since I can't do that right now feel free to take the idea for yourselves and write a fic about it if you totally listen to it.

Plus this era is so different from the current era in Kai's time which although I haven't determined an exact date yet should be around the early to mid 2000's.

Although my biggest regret in writing this story was actually making Kai a kid other than that I'm pretty happy with how it's going so far. So I'm probably going to try to not exactly recon him being a child but find a way probably through some sort of Time Machine shenanigans or something like that to bring him up without having him gain so many tickets. I kind of already have an idea that makes sense with the plot as well so I think I'll be pretty good.

Anyway, I labeled this as part one because this side story is obviously not finished and I may or may not come back to it depending on what you guys think as I have a few more ideas about it but I want to spend more time writing on a fic that I haven't posted yet so yeah.

Part of me is having the idea that traditional gender roles might be a bit different in this universe thanks to the effects of the ticket.

[Rule 63]

|Rare Trait|

["Where Banana?" Reality across all of existence has been twisted, warped, retconned, and remade to make some men women. Or women, men.]

Also, side note I think I'm going to change the relationship between Hercules and the Amazons because Marvel Heracles is actually a good guy for the most part. I've also been thinking of switching him with the Record of Ragnarok version. I'm going to do a lot of mythical gods for example, Zeus. He's going to be a mix of his DC and Ragnarok versions with his mortal appearance resembling his Ragnarok more and his higher form being the one from DC. I'm thinking maybe an aspect system or an avatar/icon system but I'm not sure yet.

Anyway, things like Rule 63 have caused several powerful important figures and warriors to become women and some to become men. Which has given me several ideas actually I just don't know if I'll ever get around to using them.

So let me know what you guys thought of this chapter in the comments and have a nice day/night.
