Chapter 178 - Chunin Exams # 37

Konohagakure No Sato :

Ichiraku Ramen :

Naruto disregarded The Pervy Sage and got on his way to The Ichiraku Ramen , Getiing inside , naruto directly ordered 10 special Ramen and dig in , and didn't stop till he felt satisfied .

"Thank you for the wonderful food!"

"Hoho, no problem at all!"

Naruto clapped his hands in thanks after finishing his dinner, he putted his hands in his pockets to pay when Teuchi's booming voice drifted over from the kitchen.

"How are the preparations for the Chunin Exams coming along, Naruto?"

Hearing the old chef's question, Naruto casually scratched the back of his head and grinned at Uncle Teuchi who came out of Kitchen area "Haha, it's all good, Uncle Teuchi! Just you wait—the next time I eat here, it'll be Chunin Naruto ordering the bowls!"

"Haha! Now that is what I like to hear!"

Ayame chimed in from the side, wiping down the counter with a smile. "Haha, you know, we actually already went ahead and bought our tickets for the finals!"

" huh..??" Naruto blinked.

"I mean, obviously we're going to be right there in the stands cheering on our best customer! So you better do your absolute best out there!"

The exact microsecond those words left Ayame's mouth, the color completely drained from Naruto's face. In a panicked reflex, he slammed his [Acting] skill into overdrive, violently forcing a normal expression back onto his features.

But that split-second lapse was all it took.

Teuchi, who had literally watched Naruto grow up from a scrawny toddler under his direct watch, picked up on it instantly. The civilian chef might not have been some elite tactical detective, but he knew Naruto's tells. He could see the deep, sudden look of trouble flash across the boy's face, even if Naruto was currently smiling like nothing happened.

Narrowing his eyes slightly, the Ichiraku boss asked quietly, "Is everything okay, Naruto?"

Naruto didn't miss a beat, smoothly playing it off. "It's nothing, Teuchi-san."

"..Are you sure?"

"Well.... it's just that this is going to be the first time I'm ever going to perform in front of the entire village," Naruto said, letting a soft 'vulnerable' tone seep into his voice. "And it'll be the first time I actually have people in the stands cheering for me."

Hearing those apparently "heartfelt" words, Teuchi and Ayame's expressions instantly melted. Their hearts ached for him. As the handful of people who had witnessed the darkest, loneliest chapters of Naruto's childhood, they interpreted his reaction in a completely different light.

They figured he was just deeply overwhelmed by the idea of public performance, of finally earning the villagers' acknowledgment, and the alien feeling of having a real support , Finally understanding that there are people Cheering for him too .

It completely caught them off guard to realize that something they considered a normal, casual gesture meant the entire world to the boy.

The stand fell into a brief, emotional silence, which was quickly shattered by a hyperactive Ayame bumping his shoulder. "So, the future 'Greatest Hokage of all time' actually gets stage fright, huh?"

"..Haha! Cut me some slack, Ayame-nee! Even the greatest Hokage has to start as a nervous genin & first Chunin Exam , you know!"

"Well, she's got a point there," Teuchi chuckled warmly. He reached across the counter, placing a heavy, reassuring hand right on Naruto's blonde hair. "Regardless of what happens, we'll be right there to cheer you on , Naruto."

"Yeah! Just go out there and give it your all," Ayame piped up, winking. "And hey, just so you know—even if you lose, the post-heartbreak consolation ramen is completely on the house!"

".....Don't tempt me like that, Ayame-nee."

"Hahaha!" X3

The three of them laughed together, sharing a genuinely warm moment. Chuckling, Naruto unzipped his slick new Fox Wallet—a massive upgrade from his old, battered green frog pouch—and pulled out the bills to pay Teuchi for the meal.

"Here you go, Uncle Teuchi."

"You know what? Let's make this one on the house," Teuchi replied heartily, waving his hands to reject the cash. "Consider it a good luck charm from the shop for your big exams."

"No way, absolutely not. You can treat me after I win. For now, take the money." Naruto forcefully shoved the bills directly into Teuchi's palm.

"Alright, alright, you stubborn kid." Teuchi smiled.

With the bill settled, Naruto waved farewell to Uncle Teuchi and Ayame-nee, turning on his heel to stroll down the bustling street. Teuchi stood at the entrance, watching Naruto's retreating figure. Staring at that back, which had grown significantly broader and stronger over the past few months, the old chef's eyes filled with deep nostalgia.

"One Tokubetsu Ramen, please!"

The sudden shout of a new customer snapped Teuchi violently out of his trip down memory lane.

"Coming right up!"

Shouting his standard customer response, Teuchi turned back toward the steaming cooking vats. He glanced down at the cash still crumpled in his hand, intending to drop it into the register, but his eyes caught something strange. Mixed directly into the middle of the paper bills was a small, tightly folded strip of plain white paper.

(...Hmm??)

Frowning, Teuchi slipped the cash into his apron and quietly unfolded the hidden note. His eyes scanned the Neat handwriting:

[Don't attend the Chunin Exams. Take a vacation and get completely out of the village during those days—especially the finals. Don't mention this to a single soul, and don't make a scene about leaving. I'm not entirely certain yet, but just in case... BELIEVE ME. — Uncle Teuchi]

The moment he finished reading the words, Teuchi's brows furrowed in deep bewilderment. He re-read the message three times, his brain working furiously until it clicked that Naruto had explicitly planted this on him. A dread began to settle in his stomach.

(Is the boy in some kind of trouble?)

But Teuchi immediately shook his head, dismissing the thought. Even if he wasn't privy to the classified military details, he knew Naruto shared a close, almost grandfatherly relationship with the Third Hokage. If Naruto was safe with the Hokage, then what did this mean?

(Can I even help him?)

He looked down at his own calloused hands. He was just a civilian. A regular guy without a single drop of active chakra running through his system. Even if a storm was brewing around Naruto, a ramen chef couldn't do anything to stop it.

"Dad? Is the order ready yet?"

Ayame's sharp voice sliced right through his spiraling thoughts, asking about the customer's food. Teuchi quickly balled up the note, shoving it deep into his pocket as he went back to prepping the noodles. But his mind was already completely made up. His eyes lingered on the final two words of the letter.

Believe me.

(...Maybe it really is time for us to pack up and go visit Grandma out in the countryside . It's been a while since we traveled anyway.)

Teuchi handed the steaming bowl of ramen over to Ayame, looking at his oblivious daughter with a headache.

(...Sigh... It is going to be a nightmare trying to convince Ayame to skip the finals.)

Teuchi decided he would handle that troublesome conversation later tonight. He also quietly resolved to casually invite a few of his close civilian merchant friends to tag along on the "spontaneous vacation," keeping the underlying reason completely secret.

Up above, entirely unnoticed by the occupants of the shop, a tiny, ordinary-looking toad was stuck flat against the ceiling. It had been there since the moment Naruto stepped inside, watching everything from the cash transfer to the exact text written on the secret note in Teuchi's hands.

Meters away, the visual and mental data immediately transmitted back to a certain white-haired Toad Sannin. Jiraiya closed his eyes, exhaling a long breath of relief.

(...It seems the kid actually has quite a few people he cherishes.)

Completely unaware of the total, sentimental hogwash currently running through the Sannin's misinformed brain, Naruto continued walking down the main thoroughfare.

(...If Uncle Teuchi doesn't take the hint and start packing within the next week or two, I'll just have Honekawa-san mobilize his corporate network and officially drag Teuchi out to the Fire Capital under the guise of an exclusive 'Business & Investment')

Naruto walked along the pave-way, popping a sweet lollipop into his mouth as a massive, thumping migraine began to violently expand inside his skull.

The headache had absolutely nothing to do with Teuchi or the literal spy toad currently hopping across the rooftops behind him. It was simply the biological tax of his [Great Sage] buff hitting its hard expiration limit.

Back in the early days, the exact second the Great Sage buff wore off, Naruto would immediately get knocked out cold, collapsing onto the dirt or wherever he stood. Over time, through sheer stubborn adaptation, chugging sugar lollipops, and fine-tuning his recovery windows, he had managed to drastically shorten the unconsciousness threshold.

But the definitive turning point had arrived the moment he Invented the [Eternal Forge]. Since integrating that into his system, not only did his post-sage "burnout" phase entirely disappear, but as of two weeks ago, he could actively walk around and maintain complete operational awareness—even if it came with a split-headache

(....Seriously, I am so glad I went through the trouble of forging that skill.)

Of course, Naruto wasn't naive enough to think that The Eternal Forge was solely responsible. The sheer stack of passive physical buffs he carried, alongside his unique [Internal Strength] Unique skill, acted as the primary shock absorbers for his nervous system. But there was no denying that the Eternal Forge had massively accelerated his body's adaptation.

Rubbing his temples to dull the pulsing ache, Naruto kept his sandles moving at a steady pace through the crowded streets. Disregarding the trailing toad completely, he steered his path directly back toward the Konoha Hospital.

Walking into the Konoha Hospital, Naruto made a beeline straight for Tsunade's office. He was officially out of patience regarding a certain Toad. It had been ten days, and somehow, that giant white-haired Sannin kept miraculously "bumping into him" through one absurd coincidence or another.

Yeah, Jiraiya was clearly hell-bent on forcing these "lucky encounters" with him—something Naruto had absolutely zero interest in.

(Sasuke is out training with Kakashi, Choji is recovering comfortably at home, and Lee never got seriously injured in the first place... honestly, it's a relief that none of my friends are stuck in the hospital right now.)

Strolling down the sterile white corridors leading to the Hokage wing, Naruto suddenly came face-to-face with someone completely unexpected.

Walking toward him was a tall kunoichi for her age, wearing a crisp hospital coat over her clothes, pushing up her glasses while reviewing a medical chart. Her signature red ponytail swayed behind her.

"Karin?"

Karin immediately recognized his voice. Her eyes instantly lit up with pure joy as she quickened her pace to meet the blonde.

"Naruto! What are you doing at the hospital?" Karin asked, her eyes darting over him from head to toe to check for injuries. Seeing nothing wrong with him, she looked back at his face, patiently waiting for an answer.

"Nothing much. I'm just here to visit Tsunade-nee," Naruto replied casually.

"Tsunade-sama? Is it something serious?"

"Nah. Just some annoying toad problems."

"Toad...?"

"Don't worry about it, it's nothing major. But what about you? What are you doing here? Shouldn't you be over in the Sealing Department?"

Naruto was genuinely curious. He remembered that Karin used to violently hate the idea of healing or medical ninjutsu because it dragged up traumatic memories of her past in the Grass Village.

and Now She is focusing entirely on Fuinjutsu with Her Goal to be sealmaster .

Hearing his question, Karin adjusted her glasses, a soft smile playing on her lips. "I'm checking in on Gian and Shizuka-chan."

"Oh."

(Totally forgot about them,) Naruto thought, feeling a sudden twinge of guilt.

He had visited them initially, but between dealing with Jiraiya, his business Pans, and upgrading his arsenal, this Genin team had completely slipped his mind.

Before he could dwell on it, Karin spoke up again, her voice filled with quiet pride. "I'm also learning Medical Ninjutsu under Tsunade-sama."

"Really?!"

"Mm... I've decided I want to become just as strong and capable as Tsunade-sama."

Naruto looked closely at Karin's face. She really had matured after surviving the Chunin Exams. The terrified girl who wanted absolutely nothing to do with healing was now willingly pursuing the exact field she used to loathe.

(.*Sigh*...Growth. )

Thinking about Karin's special Uzumaki physique, it made sense. She was biologically engineered to be a medical ninja. Because of her past trauma, Tsunade and the others had completely backed off and hadn't pressured her into it. But now that Karin had freely chosen this path for herself?

The sky was the limit for her future.

"But wait, what about Sealing?" Naruto asked.

Karin paused for a moment before answering, looking a little shy. "I'm going to learn sealing too."

"Hoh."

Feeling her cheeks heat up under Naruto's impressed gaze, she quickly elaborated. "Well, Tsunade-sama said I actually have the raw talent to pursue both... kind of like you. So I decided I'm going to master Medical Ninjutsu and Sealing at the same time."

"Haha, then good luck! If you ever hit a wall or need help, just ask me."

"Mm!" Karin nodded enthusiastically, her face bright red.

"Alright, I'm gonna head over to Tsunade-nee's office now. Catch you later."

"Hm."

Naruto gave her a quick nod and continued down the hall. Karin stood there for a moment, watching his retreating back with a fierce determination in her eyes—remembering the new resolve she had forged after the Chunin Exams.

(...Being weak is not a sin... but staying weak without putting in the effort to change it... ABSOLUTELY IS )

------------------------------------------------

Naruto finally reached Tsunade's office and knocked on the heavy wooden door.

"..Come in."

Pushing the door open, Naruto was met with the sight of Tsunade completely buried behind a mountain of paperwork. Despite it already being 7:00 PM, she was aggressively stamping documents while Shizune sat at a side desk, frantically trying to help manage the overflow.

Naruto walked inside, pulled up a chair right in front of Tsunade's desk, and just sat there in total silence.

The silence stretched incredibly thin, until Tsunade finally snapped.

"Spit it out, brat. I already have a massive headache just looking at these papers."

Hearing his cue, Naruto leaned forward. "Why are they already dumping this much paperwork on you? Aren't they worried you're just going to run away before you actually become the Hokage?"

"....Because they know that only a fool would ever accept the position of Hokage. And I am precisely that fool."

"Hoh."

"And you're a fool too, which happens to be an inherent quality required to become Hokage."

"Are you serious?"

"If you genuinely want to surpass my grandfather, the First Hokage, you definitely need to surpass his sheer foolishness too."

"...Ugh. You really don't want to become Hokage, do you?"

"Oh, whatever gave that away?" Tsunade replied with biting sarcasm, not even looking up from her papers.

"....Aren't there other people who could take the job?"

"...It's not that simple. Not just anyone can become Hokage."

"What about your other teammate? Isn't he just as strong as you? Shouldn't he step up and do it?"

"Pfft..... That one is only good at running away from these exact kinds of responsibilities. He might be willing to throw his life away for the village in a fight, but he will absolutely never sit behind a desk and become Hokage."

"...Oh. So why isn't he helping out around the village instead of wasting all his time?"

"Wasting time?" Tsunade finally paused, looking up at him.

" Yeah..... Why is that Toad following me around the village every single day?"

Hearing the direct question, Tsunade's hands visibly quivered. She set her pen down. After a long, heavy pause, she finally spoke, but her answer was entirely outside of Naruto's expectations.

"....Do you really not know?"

Hearing Tsunade throw the question right back at him, Naruto immediately clamped his mouth shut. In his rush to get the stalking to stop, it seemed he had momentarily forgotten the carefully crafted "Genius Persona" he had established with the village Higher-ups .

( ...Ofcourse , The Genius Should have deduced this )

Of course, while Naruto might have forgotten for a split second, Tsunade definitely hadn't. That was exactly why she countered his question instead of giving him a straight answer. She knew perfectly well that Naruto already possessed all the pieces to the puzzle, and was just trying to use her to force the conversation into the light.

*Whoosh.*

Tsunade's eyes blurred slightly as a brilliant flash of yellow light erupted in front of her. In a fraction of a second, Naruto had vanished completely from his seat.

( ....*sigh* I am sorry kiddo , This village is such a dissappointment )

Seeing him literally teleport away to avoid the conversation, Tsunade let out a massive, exhausted sigh. She leaned back in her chair and aggressively massaged her temples. Her headache had just leveled up.

Shizune, who had silently witnessed the entire bizarre exchange, finally spoke up. "Tsunade-sama?"

"...Hm?"

"Wouldn't it have been better to just explain things to him?"

Tsunade looked at her assistant with tired eyes. "Shizune."

"...Yes?"

"Naruto is exceptionally smart."

"So?"

"...What I mean is, he actually already knows everything mostly "

".....Then why did he ask?"

"....To force the issue into the light. He wanted me to be the one to formally explain all the various secrets tying him to Jiraiya."

"...?? I don't understand. If he already knows, then whether you explain it or not shouldn't matter, right?"

"*Sigh*.... The person who actually needs to sit down and give that boy answers is not me."

"Not you? Then who...?"

"Jiraiya or The Third Hokage ? He's the one who made this colossal mess, and I absolutely refuse to clean it up for him. Especially after he already dumped this entire ruined village in my lap."

Tsunade suddenly stopped talking, her eyes shifting toward the window. Shizune followed her gaze just as the office window slid open. Jiraiya tumbled inside, muttering under his breath.

"How the hell did that brat's chakra just vanish into thin air? Did he seriously just use the Flying Thunder God to instantly return home?!"

Seeing Jiraiya step into her office, Tsunade's eyes instantly narrowed—specifically locking onto the large bottle of premium sake dangling from his hand.

Noticing her gaze, Jiraiya grinned, stepping fully inside. "Yo, Tsuna. How about a drink?"

Taking the obvious bribe without an ounce of shame, Tsunade snatched the bottle, popped the cork smoothly, and chugged directly from the glass to soothe her raging migraine.

(....Aah, what a blessing )

After taking a hefty swig, Tsunade understood the terms of Jiraiya's bribe. She wasn't going to reject free, high-quality alcohol, but she also didn't mind dropping a few harsh truths on her former teammate either.

Taking another aggressive gulp under Jiraiya's twitching eye and Shizune's deeply worried gaze, Tsunade wiped her mouth.

"Jiraiya."

"...Come on, let me have a chug too."

(Hehe..... indirect kiss...!!)

Jiraiya thought perversely, reaching out to try and take the bottle back.

Tsunade ruthlessly slapped his hand away. "Naruto inherited Kushina's physical traits, you know."

"Hm? What are you talking about?" Jiraiya blinked, totally thrown by the sudden shift in topic.

"He possesses the Mind's Eye of the Kagura. He is a high-level sensor. He knows perfectly well that you are stalking him every single day."

Hearing this, Jiraiya's perverted demeanor instantly evaporated. Deep lines of stress formed on his forehead as he fully sobered up. After a heavy silence, he asked quietly, ".....Did he ask you about me?"

" He did."

"What did you say?" Jiraiya asked, a desperate glimmer of hope in his eyes.

"..... nothing," Tsunade replied, shaking her head.

"Huh?! Why?!"

"WHY?! YOU IDIOT TOAD...!!" Tsunade roared, slamming the bottle down on the desk. "You tell me! Why should I be the one to tell him about YOU?! Why couldn't you do it yourself, or make that damn Monkey do it?!"

Jiraiya panicked, holding his hands up defensively. "But he's actively ignoring me! I don't get it! Just what exactly did I do wrong?! Didn't the MIsunderstanding cleared Already ?? "

Hearing his sheer, unfiltered ignorance, Tsunade's temper strangely cooled off, replaced by utter disbelief.

(....Why am I constantly surrounded by idiots?)

Tsunade slowly sat back down in her chair. She looked at him for a long time before throwing the exact same question she had given Naruto.

".....Do you really not know?"

"..." Jiraiya just stared at her in total confusion.

Tsunade pinched the bridge of her nose. "Naruto is smart."

"...Yeah... I heard he was the top graduate of his class this year," Jiraiya said, puffing his chest out slightly with unearned pride.

Seeing him completely missing the point, Tsunade decided to just take the safety off and fire point-blank. "With his own wits and intelligence, Naruto has already deduced that his father is the Fourth Hokage."

"Huh?!"

"He's also a frequent visitor to the Konoha Archives. He definitely already knows exactly who the Fourth Hokage's teacher was....not that it is much of secret "

All the color violently drained from Jiraiya's face. But Tsunade wasn't even close to finished.

".....He also successfully deduced that Kakashi was his father's student."

"..."

"Naruto never actually acknowledged Kakashi as his sensei until the Wave Mission. He only accepted him after Kakashi put his life on the line and literally lost his Sharingan eye to save Naruto and Team 7."

"..."

"It seems the old Monkey never bothered to give you the actual details... or maybe you were just too busy 'researching' to even bother meeting with him and asking how the kid was doing?"

"..."

"Naruto knows way more about you than you think. Between the fact that your famous book shares his exact name, and your highly publicized history with Minato.... a tiny bit of digging was all it took for a genius like him to connect the dots."

"..."

" As I said , Not just Intelligent but also sharp as Nara .....Like a proper shinobi "

Seeing Jiraiya standing there in silence, Tsunade shook her head and asked the question one final time.

"Now, I will ask you again..... do you really not know why Naruto is actively avoiding you?"

The final piece clicked into place. Jiraiya's face went completely deathly pale. He finally realized the truth: Naruto wasn't avoiding him because of some funny misunderstanding or because he thought Jiraiya was just a creepy stranger. Naruto was avoiding him because he knew exactly who he was—and he knew that his Godfather or someone Related to him had abandoned him for years.

(.....12 Years )

Standing off to the side, Shizune ducked her head, finally understanding the heavy implications of the conversation.

(...No wonder Naruto-kun teleported away so fast.)

Full-blown panic set in. Jiraiya desperately turned to Tsunade, practically begging her. She was his only hope to bridge the massive, icy gap between him and Minato's son. He absolutely could not stand the thought of his own godson treating him with cold hostility for the rest of his life.

"Tsunade, please, you have to help m—"

"...No." Tsunade cut him off coldly, shifting her gaze back down to her paperwork. She didn't have the courage to look him in the eyes right now. Or maybe, she didn't have the courage to look at her own reflection.

"WHY...!!!"

"...Why? 'Why,' you ask? Jiraiya, you might not fully understand this, but I only came back to this village a year ago."

"..."

"I have absolutely zero right to defend your case to that boy.....much less try to explain my own absence."

"..."

"You might be his Godfather... but Kushina was my distant cousin. Naruto and I share actual blood."

"..."

"I abandoned this village during the Second War. I stayed away through the Third War, right up until now. I haven't been a part of this village for nearly twenty years. The fact that Naruto hasn't screamed at me and demanded answers for why I abandoned him is already a god-given blessing..... And you want me to help you?"

"..."

" I really don't have any right , And I am not shameless as the Old man either "

"..."

"I really can't , Jiraiya. I am incapable of defending Myself ...much less to help you"

"..."

Looking at Jiraiya's hollow, devastated expression, Tsunade rubbed her forehead wearily.

( At least Minato and Kushina didn't ask me to look after him .....but how can they , when I left the village after 2nd war , they were just 13-14 year old ....and then we never talked either....technically we were knowing strangers )

Kushina did come to stay at Senju compound , but she came at 7-10 year of age , and at that time Tsunade was already busy with Jonin and medical reforms and then later in second war, The war that took away nawaki and Dan .

"Go talk to Sensei. He knows Naruto better than anyone else. He might be able to help you.... I can't."

Tsunade said this while purposely omitting the current cold war happening between Naruto and the Third Hokage. Despite knowing that Naruto was fully aware of his heritage, Hiruzen still stubbornly refused to come clean and officially legitimize Naruto's identity in the light.

( The one who let the boy down are not me )

Or maybe The The Third Hokage was not worried about the indentity issue but the questions Naruto will throw at that time . The so called 'care' of Hokage's son recieved from the village and also from his 'grandpa Hokage' .

(...*Sigh*... The ones who truly owe that boy answers are the Third Hokage and Jiraiya.... This is their mess. Not mine.)

Tsunade grabbed the bottle and took one , long chug of sake. She looked back at Jiraiya, who was now just standing there silently like a corpse. Shaking her head, she fully buried herself back into the paperwork on her desk.

( At the very least, I can distract myself from all this guilt with these damn forms.)

A few moments later, Jiraiya practically dragged himself out of the office, heading straight toward the Hokage's office—a place he had actively avoided since returning to the village.

(...What the hell do I do now?)
