Chapter 1 - Prologue — The Whisper of the Nine Imperial Heavens

Long before the stars learned their names and the void knew silence, existence trembled.

The First Universe, vast and ancient, sensed a hunger beyond its laws. Entities that should not be — formless, law-devouring voids born from the cracks between realities. They were called Demons, not for malice alone, but for their nature: to consume, to unravel, to erase entire cosmoses as if they were fleeting dreams.

The Universe could not fight them directly. Its own rules bound it. So it chose desperation.

It fractured itself.

In the year 2037 of the Old Calendar, the Second Big Bang erupted — not to create anew, but to realign. Earth trembled as it fused with eight hidden realms, birthing the 9 Imperial Heavens: a colossal vertical cosmos layered like an ascending jade pagoda piercing the firmament.

• The Four Mortal Heavens formed the turbulent foundation. Harsh, mana-rich, and brimming with raw potential. Earth, the Fourth Mortal Realm, stood as the lowest and weakest — a crucible where survival forged the sharpest wills and hidden potential could bloom brightest.

• The Three Divine Heavens rose above, realms of ancient bloodlines, soaring divine beasts, elegant elven spires, and stabilized cosmic laws. Here, power flowed like rivers and legends walked openly.

• The Two Celestial Heavens crowned the apex, closest to pure Cosmic Energy. Ethereal domains where Supreme Gods and the mightiest Divine Beasts reigned, their mere presence warping reality.

For 100,000 years, the Stairway to Heaven has stood as the spine of this new order. Born in the same cataclysmic moment as the alignment, it connects every layer — an infinite path of ascension where strength, will, and Dao comprehension alone determine how high one may climb. No forced floors to clear, no universal seals demanded. Only the burning desire to rise.

On the Stairway, beings chase power, fame, wealth, glory, or simple survival. Some seek to protect their loved ones. Others crave dominion. All know the truth whispered in higher realms: every 1,000 years, the Demon World Portals tear open, forcing a brutal war across all Nine Heavens. The strong ascend to fight. The weak perish.

The Path of Power

All life awakens in the Mortal Heavens. At age 16, humans may step onto the Stairway to Heaven.

Ranks and Breakthroughs govern all existence:

• E to S Rank (Mortal Realm): The foundation. Lifespan reaches a maximum of 1,000 years. Climbers may travel between the Four Mortal Heavens but cannot yet leave them. Qi and Mana form the primary energies, often blended with remnants of old-world technology in hybrid techniques.

Upon surpassing S Rank, one enters the Pseudo-Immortal Threshold. The body refines, mortal weaknesses fall away, and lifespan surges to 100,000 years base.

Beyond this lie the true peaks of the 9 Imperial Heavens:

• Divine Ranks (descending order):
Divine Sovereign → Heavenly Marquis → Dao Lord (e.g., Dao Lord of the Eternal Flame).
Lifespan leaps to 100,000,000 years base upon entering these ranks. These existences command domains, lead spirit beast armies, and weave fate across entire layers. Divine Dragons and ancient elves often seize these titles through bloodline or conquest.

• God Ranks and Celestial Titles (descending order — the summit):
Celestial Emperor → Void Sovereign → Jade Immortal → Star-Devouring Saint.
These approach true godhood. A single thought can calm raging mana storms or shatter mountain ranges. Lifespan extends even further, approaching practical immortality. Divine Beasts at this level can rival or surpass titled humans through raw instinct and cosmic attunement. Humans, though starting weakest, have proven most unpredictable — their adaptive spirit allowing some to stand equal to even the mightiest Divine Dragons.

Every major breakthrough multiplies lifespan by four and explodes capabilities exponentially. The higher one climbs the Stairway, the heavier the burden — and the closer one draws to the Demon Portals that threaten all existence.

The Ten Most Powerful Divine Beasts

At the apex of the Divine and Celestial Heavens dwell the Ten Supreme Divine Beasts, ancient existences whose bloodlines and might have shaped the 9 Imperial Heavens since the Second Big Bang. These beings rarely descend to lower realms, but their names alone command reverence and fear. Many hold titles equivalent to Divine Sovereign or higher, and their descendants or contracted partners often dominate entire layers.

1. Primordial Azure Dragon — Sovereign of the East, ruler of wind, wood, and storms. Its roar can summon tempests that reshape landscapes.

2. Eternal Vermilion Bird (Fenghuang) — Queen of fire and rebirth, whose flames grant nirvana or utter annihilation.

3. Indomitable White Tiger — Lord of the West, embodiment of metal, war, and slaughter. Its claws tear through space itself.

4. Mysterious Black Tortoise (Xuanwu) — Guardian of the North, master of water, earth, and unbreakable defense. Its shell can withstand heavenly tribulations.

5. Radiant Yellow Dragon (Huanglong) — Central sovereign among dragons, controller of earth and imperial authority.

6. Heavenly Qilin (Kirin) — Auspicious bringer of prosperity and judgment, whose steps cause flowers to bloom and evil to wither.

7. Yinglong (Winged Dragon) — Ancient rain-bringer and warrior dragon, said to have aided in the alignment of the Heavens.

8. Nine-Tailed Celestial Fox — Master of illusions, charm, and fate-weaving. Its tails can manipulate destiny and devour souls.

9. Bifang (Crimson Fire Bird) — Harbinger of flames and omens, whose cry foretells disaster or fortune.

10. Taotie — The Devourer, gluttonous beast of chaos whose maw can consume laws, energy, and even fragments of reality — a living warning of what unchecked hunger can become.

These ten stand as pillars and potential allies or rivals in the higher Heavens. Their blood, scales, feathers, or cores are legendary treasures capable of granting immense power — or inviting catastrophe.

The Stairway itself possesses a living spirit: Tian'yu, the ancient guardian born of the alignment. Elegant and vast, with a voice like jade chimes carried on cosmic wind, it watches all climbers with detached amusement and quiet curiosity. Most it addresses with polite detachment. A rare few earn special notice.

In the Fourth Mortal Realm — Earth — Driftbreak City

The salty wind howled through the half-submerged streets as the Awakening Ceremony reached its peak. Lanterns infused with low-grade Qi flickered against the perpetual twilight of the coastal fortress.

Sixteen-year-old Joshua Kane stood at the center of the square, his family close by. His father, Kane Voss — a high-talent Qi technician whose hands could forge weapons that sang with energy — watched with quiet pride mixed with old regret. His mother, Lira Kane — a gifted Mana weaver whose barriers had saved countless lives — squeezed his shoulder gently. Beside them, the twelve-year-old twins bounced with unrestrained energy: Kai (Yang affinity, fiery and loud) and Mira (Yin affinity, sly and quick with illusions), already showing sparks of talent that made the city elders whisper.

Both parents could have climbed far higher decades ago. Their talents were exceptional. Yet Joshua's birth — and the strange "tie" it created through his hidden Anomaly Seed — had anchored the family here, in the weakest layer. They had chosen to stay. To raise their children together.

Joshua felt that weight in his chest like a solemn promise.

He looked up at the colossal Stairway to Heaven, its base shimmering where it pierced the clouds above Driftbreak, extending endlessly into realms beyond mortal sight.

Most chosen teens cheered or struck proud poses as the light selected them.

Joshua simply stared, hazel eyes sharp.

"…We're all going," he whispered. "Or none of us."

As he stepped forward onto the first shimmering platform, the world around him flickered — just for half a second.

A calm, resonant voice, like jade chimes carried on cosmic wind, echoed solely in his mind:

"Welcome… The Anomaly."

Tian'yu had spoken.

And somewhere far above, in the Divine and Celestial Heavens, ancient eyes — including those of the Ten Supreme Divine Beasts — turned with faint interest toward the lowest realm.

The climb had begun.

Not for glory alone.

Not for power alone.

But for the family that had given up their own ascent so he could one day pull them all upward — and perhaps, in time, stand before even the mightiest beasts of legend.
