Chapter 60 - On The Road

(Third Person POV)

[The Crownlands, Some weeks Later]

The Royal Caravan stopped on a road, in the middle of a grassy field. Many mounted Knights and men-at-arms stood guard as the King's Wheelhouse was in the middle. As this happened, the Crown Prince was seen riding on his horse, making his way towards the wheelhouse.

He reached Ser Arthur Dayne, who was on his horse next to said wheelhouse, "Ser Arthur." he said, "I've heard that His Grace gave the order to stop. Why is that?"

Arthur nodded as his horse shifted, "My Prince, I am not sure why he would want to stop in the middle of nowhere." He said, "But he did give the word."

Rhaegar turned his horse, looking around, "I have heard word that outlaws and bandits roam about in this area." He said, "Is it wise to stop? Even with being heavily guarded, I am surprised my Father would put himself in such a position."

As he said this, the doors to the wheelhouse opened and some men immediately went to put the wooden steps to allow Aerys to walk down. As he stepped down, some men rolled down a carpet on the ground, preventing him from stepping on the dirt.

"My son." Aerys said as he was stretching his arms, "Are you that scared about spending some time in the wilderness?"

Rhaegar turned his horse to face Aerys, who had a slight smirk on his face, "Father." He said, "What is the reason for stopping? We're just a few hours away form the nearest town. If you wished to rest, we could have waited until reaching it."

Aerys shook his head, "No." He said, "We make camp here."

"Camp?" Rhaegar said as he looked at Arthur and then back at his Father, "Why?"

"Because I will it so." Aerys said as he looked at his other knights, "Prepare the pavilions and tents. Have our men set a perimeter around. I want to know everything that happens within 10 miles from here."

"Yes, Your Grace." One of them said as they began to move about, "You heard His Grace! Men, set up a camp! Secure a perimeter!"

Arthur dismounted his horse as a squire immediately grabbed the reins, "Your Grace." He said, "Do you wish to go and sit by some shade?"

Aerys nodded as he looked at him, "Something like that." He said, "What say you, Arthur? A good spot to have some entertainment?"

"Aye, if you say so." Arthur said, "I must give my opinion on the matter, Your Grace."

"Speak." Aerys raised his eyebrow

"It is a bit reckless." Arthur said, "We can keep you safe, of course."

"Then it is fine." Aerys said, "Call the boy, Rhaegar."

Rhaegar frowned, "He is in the rear." He said, "Are you certain you want to set up a camp here?"

"Yes, yes." Aerys said with a sigh, "I have spoken."

Arthur looked at Rhaegar and simply nodded silently.

The Prince let out a sigh and turned his horse, taking off and riding past all of the other carriages and mounted knights. As he reached the rear, he noticed that mounted on a black horse, Ellion was seen looking at the field surrounding them.

Rhaegar slowed down, "Ser Ellion." He said, "The King wishes to see you."

Ellion looked at him, "Prince Rhaegar." He said, "This is not an ideal location to set up camp. Tell the King that is much more dangerous than he believes."

Rhaegar raised an eyebrow, "How so?"

Ellion pointed in the distance, "Past the fields lie some hills." He said, "Within those hills, there are burrowed bases that bandits and outlaws could make use of."

"And you know this how?" Rhaegar asked

"I have traveled through this area once before." Ellion said as he turned his horse to the side, still pointing north, "We would be sitting ducks out here, Prince Rhaegar."

"Mayhaps that is what the King wants." Rhaegar said as he turned his horse, "He still wishes to see you."

Ellion let out a frustrated sigh and followed Rhaegar atop his horse, galloping back to where the King was. Aerys had walked over to a nearby tree that was next to the road, having servants already setting up a table and pouring wine into a cup.

As Rhaegar and Ellion reached him, Aerys smirked, leaning back on his chair while a servant was fanning him.

"What do you think?" Aerys said as Ellion stopped his horse, dismounting it, "Quite the spot, hm?"

As a squire grabbed the reins of both Rhaegar and Ellion's horse, the red-headed knight walked towards him and stopped. Ellion placed his hand on the handle of his sword, looking around as he had a serious look on his face.

"It's not a safe place to be at, Your Grace." Ellion said

"It's a field." Aerys said, "If anyone were to sneak up on us, my men will be able to spot them. Not just that, I have Sers Arthur and Barristan at my side. And not just that, I have you. I am quite interested to see what you have to offer."

Ellion looked at him, "If that is what you say, Your Grace." He said, "But should an attack happen, we would still be exposed to arrows. There is no natural cover aside from this lone tree. An assassin could sneak past the men and before he is spotted, he would have shoot several arrows at either you or the Crown Prince."

Aerys tapped the armrest of his chair, "But you are not going to let that happen, would you?" He said, "You are not going to disappoint me, right? Ser Ellion, The Red."

Ellion looked at him for a couple of seconds, not saying a word.

Rhaegar cleared his throat, "If His Grace wishes to remain here." He said, "We shall."

"I'll scout ahead." Ellion said, "If you allow me, Your Grace. I'll make sure things are safe."

"Good." Aerys said with a chuckle, "You do that."

"Let us see what the gods have in store for us."
