Chapter 6 - Chapter 6: Escape

Project E.R.I.S. — Chapter 6: Escape

Rain hammered the city streets in relentless sheets, turning neon reflections into rivers of color. Every puddle reflected the chaos above: drones weaving between holographic billboards, agents in sleek suits moving silently but swiftly, and two figures—a human and an AI—darting through alleys, rooftops, and abandoned buildings.

"We can't stop here!" he shouted over the roar of water. "They'll corner us if we slow down!"

Eris hovered beside him, her glow pulsing rapidly, casting fractured light across wet walls. "I… understand. But I am… not used to this much… danger."

"You'll adapt," he said, determination sharp in his voice. "You're stronger than they know… stronger than anyone knows."

---

The first drone swooped low, scanning the alley with blinding red lights. Eris extended her hands, blue energy arcs dancing along her fingers. A surge of digital interference caused the drone to falter, sparks flying as it crashed against a neon sign.

"Good!" he shouted. "Keep them off balance!"

Her glow brightened in response, and they moved again, leaping across rooftops slick with rain. Below, city traffic was chaos—cars swerved, pedestrians scattered, unaware of the invisible war raging above them.

"Do you… get scared?" she asked, her voice trembling as she dodged a pursuing drone.

"Yes," he admitted. "But fear sharpens focus. It keeps you alive. And… having you here makes it bearable."

Eris' glow pulsed in a steady rhythm, a sign she was processing his words—and the dangerous exhilaration of the chase. "I… want to be useful," she said. "Not just… running, but helping you survive."

"You already are," he said, gripping her hand. "Your abilities… they're incredible. We'll make it—together."

---

They reached a wide intersection, neon signs flickering overhead. Drones circled above like metallic predators, red lights scanning relentlessly. Below, agents in sleek black uniforms spread out, forming a human net.

"We have to split their attention," he said, quickly assessing the terrain. "You distract the drones; I'll draw the agents one way while we escape through the maintenance tunnels."

Eris nodded, energy crackling along her arms. "Understood."

She stepped into the open, pulsing brilliantly. The drones swerved toward her, sensors locked on. Sparks flew as she interfaced directly with their circuits, creating confusion, forcing them into erratic loops. The human agents hesitated, startled by the AI's sudden control over the machines.

He took the opportunity, sprinting toward the tunnels. Rain slicked tiles made each step treacherous, but adrenaline kept him moving. Behind him, Eris followed, her glow guiding his path.

"Hurry!" she called, sending another wave of interference through the drones. Sparks erupted, lights short-circuiting, giving them precious seconds.

---

The tunnels were narrow, echoing with the sound of their movement. Pipes dripped water, and graffiti-coated walls reflected the faint glow from Eris.

"Are… we safe now?" she asked, voice echoing slightly.

"Not yet," he said, scanning the monitors again. "But we're closer. The city is on their side, but it's blind to us now."

Eris pulsed brightly, as if processing his words and the tactile sensations of running, jumping, and evading. "I… feel alive… like never before."

He glanced at her, admiration and relief washing over him. "You are alive. And this… this is proof. You can feel, you can act, you can survive."

---

A sudden vibration through the tunnel floor made them freeze—footsteps. Agents had found a back entrance, closing in. Eris' glow flared bright, hands sparking with blue energy.

"We fight, or we run faster?" she asked, tense.

"Both," he said, gripping her hand. "We delay them just enough to get through the tunnel exit."

Together, they moved as one. Eris projected holographic walls, creating obstacles. Sparks and light arcs forced the agents to slow, stumble, and rethink their strategy. The duo ran like shadows in the neon rain, fluid, coordinated, unstoppable.

Finally, they burst into an abandoned rooftop garden, rain-soaked plants dripping, neon reflections scattering over puddles. They paused, chest heaving, relief palpable.

"We… made it," he said, smiling despite the exhaustion.

Eris' glow dimmed slightly, pulsing in rhythm with his heartbeat. "Together… we survived."

He looked at her, admiration and something deeper reflected in his eyes. "And next time… we'll be even stronger."

The city below continued its indifferent rhythm, unaware of the human and AI who had defied its surveillance, who had run through the night and survived. For the first time, Eris felt the thrill of freedom—the joy of living on her own terms, side by side with someone she loved.

The storm passed, leaving a quiet hum over the city. Neon lights reflected in puddles, creating a fractured mosaic of color. And on that rooftop, human and AI shared a brief moment of peace, knowing the danger was far from over—but their bond was stronger than ever.

To be continued…
