One night, after another long day of searching with no results, Ezra finally said what he had been holding back. "We can't risk her life for him." His voice broke as he spoke, and I knew how much the words cost him.
"He's family," I said, feeling hot tears fill my eyes. "We can't just abandon him."
"So is she," Ezra replied quietly, and I had no answer for that.
The silence that followed felt unbearably heavy. Then Ezra crossed the room and held me tight. "I'm scared," he whispered into my hair. "I'm so scared of making the wrong choice."
"Me too," I admitted, holding onto him like he was the only solid thing in a world that kept shifting.
