Chapter 18 - Chapter 18 – Awakening II

The slow hum of mana vibrated through the massive hall, a living pulse that seemed to penetrate bone and breath alike. Hundreds of children stood in perfectly ordered lines upon the polished floor, dwarfed by towering pillars and floating platforms above. Each child faced forward, eyes wide, shoulders stiff with a mix of anticipation and fear, awaiting the physical assessment and compatibility test—the test that would define their future.

The air was thick with tension. Parents filled the elevated galleries, their eyes heavy with expectation. Some whispered prayers under their breath, others leaned forward with arms crossed, evaluating each child as if they were inspecting weapons rather than offspring. Every parent's gaze weighed like gravity, pressing down on the young shoulders below.

John swallowed hard. His palms were slick with sweat, and he wiped them quickly on his trousers. He tried to appear calm, but his heart thumped against his ribcage with deafening force.

I hope mum is watching, he thought, forcing himself to straighten his back.

A low, vibrating hum rose from the center of the hall. The sound seemed to pulse with the very heartbeat of the building. Then, a deep, commanding voice shattered the silence:

"LET THE ELITE CLASS STEP FORWARD FOR TESTING."

Instantly, the atmosphere shifted. Every eye snapped toward the elite queue. Whispers rippled through the hall like a rising tide. Some children in the elite line fidgeted, swaying under invisible pressure, while others stood motionless, faces pale but resolute.

Among the elite, one figure moved differently. Calm. Relaxed. Almost bored. Aeon.

He walked leisurely through the line, hands at his sides, his golden eyes sweeping over his peers with sharp, dismissive precision. He radiated confidence, the subtle arrogance of someone who knew he belonged above everyone else. Children of his class trembled as he passed, their rigid stances faltering under his unspoken scrutiny.

They're fidgeting? Aeon thought, a faint sneer on his lips. So much for showing why we are above them… weaklings.

He stepped onto the segregated platform reserved for the elite. The glow beneath his feet reacted instantly to his presence. His posture remained casual, yet his aura radiated undeniable dominance.

"Dr. Nathan," Aeon said, voice smooth and even, carrying effortlessly across the hall, "I am willing to go first."

Dr. Nathan's expression flickered for a split second—a subtle flash of disapproval—but immediately hardened into a composed, controlled smile. Only John, with his keen attention, noticed the faint glint of irritation in the man's eyes.

"Ah… of course," Dr. Nathan replied, his tone exaggeratedly calm. "Step forward."

He turned to the audience, sweeping his hands over the testing area. "As you can see, there are multiple testing crystals prepared. Yet none have stepped forward—except the son of Zei."

Murmurs rose like a wave. Every parent, guardian, and observer shifted slightly, craning their necks to catch a glimpse of Aeon.

Dr. Nathan's voice hardened, carrying authority. "Place your hands on the machine. Allow the energy to flow through you. Do not resist. The system will project your elemental affinity and reflect the state of your subconscious—"

Before he could finish, a thunderous clang erupted behind him.

The crystal flared violently, erupting in blinding light that forced many in the hall to shield their eyes. The mana hum spiked into a sharp, crackling roar that rattled the walls and floors. Air surged, whipping hair and clothing, sending tremors across the elevated platforms.

John stumbled back a step, eyes wide with awe and fear. Smoke coiled and twisted, thick and shimmering with sparks, masking Aeon from view for a heartbeat that stretched into eternity.

Then the smoke began to clear.

Aeon stood, perfectly composed, hand pressed against the crystal. Veins along his arm glowed faintly blue-white as lightning arced across his skin in thin, living serpents. His golden eyes shone with fierce brilliance, reflecting raw power.

Above him, the projection bloomed—a towering column of lightning branching into veins that illuminated the hall like a storm captured in a single frame. The symbol of the pure elemental affinity etched itself into existence, sharp and radiant.

For a moment, silence swallowed the room. No one dared speak.

Then a voice broke the stillness, cracking with disbelief. "A PURE LIGHTNING AFFINITY?!"

Chaos erupted. Parents and children alike gasped, some shouting in awe, others frozen in terror. Researchers and officials scrambled, holo-pads flickering in panic as they recorded and analyzed the unexpected display.

Dr. Nathan's smile froze. His eyes darted to the crystal, then to Aeon.

Pure… he thought, a chill crawling up his spine. Not diluted. Fully aligned.

Lightning responded to Aeon's presence, snapping and coiling as though alive. The testing crystal began to fracture, thin fissures spreading across its surface with sharp, metallic pops. The raw elemental energy was so intense that the protective barriers of the hall seemed to hum under strain.

Aeon exhaled softly, golden eyes sweeping over the crowd with faint amusement. "So," he said, his voice calm yet commanding, "is that sufficient?"

John's chest tightened. Every nerve in his body tingled as he watched. This—this was the son of a Pillar. The living embodiment of the elite, someone who had mastered the very essence of his being.

Dr. Nathan's mind raced behind a composed exterior.

Calythar, he thought, darkness creeping into his chest. Soon.

High above, hidden sensors flared, recording the unprecedented spike in Aeon's energy. Restricted system alerts blipped across screens only a handful of eyes could see. But the warnings were buried, quietly masked—just another silent step in the ritual of awakening.

The ceremony had barely begun.

And already, something had shifted in the balance of the academy.
