Things were stirring in the shadows of Clearwater University that I had no clue about.
Even if I'd known, I wouldn't have given a damn.
The campus belle contest that could land someone a vice presidential spot? Not my thing. All I wanted was for people to see I was actually serious about my studies, fitting into college life, and doing my best to be a decent student.
But some trouble finds you whether you want it or not.
That afternoon, right after my second class ended, my phone rang. Harriet's voice came through, shaky and tearful. "Phoebe, I'm stuck in the alley on the west side of Clearwater High School. What do I do?"
My stomach dropped. "Don't hang up. I'm on my way."
I bolted from the building, sprinting across campus. Halfway there, I nearly crashed into Charlies and his crew, who were strolling back from somewhere, laughing about something. When Charlies spotted my frantic pace and the blood drained from my face, concern flickered in his eyes.
