Chapter 7 - VII

"Morgan…" Eli tried the name out. It suited him. He thought for a moment before reaching out his hand.

"I'm Eli."

Morgan smiled. He smiled!

Eli could feel his stomach doing back flips.

"Those letters… they were from you." His tone came out somewhat accusatory.

Morgan bowed his head. "I must confess. But you see, I have watched you for so long, and I couldn't bear to not have you know of my existence. I apologise if I have caused any trouble."

There was a moment of silence. Eli didn't know what to say to that, if there was anything he could say.

"I feel the same way, Eli." The look in Morgan's eyes as he said this made him tense up.

"Feel the same way about what?"

His mind was racing, going through every moment in his life that Morgan could mean.

"When you stand up there, at the top of the tower of light. I've seen the way you look down, heard the words you whisper into the wind when you think no one can hear. I feel the same way."

Here, Morgan stopped, as if the emotions that came with the confession were too strong to handle.

"You want to die?" Eli asked, without meaning to, his voice was a whisper, like talking too loud would shatter the moment.

Morgan raised his head and stared like Eli had grown a third eye.

"No. I don't want to die. I want to… god, words are hard. I want to have not existed. I feel empty and without purpose, a burden to the world. But I don't want to die." His eyes grew soft again.

"I felt that way until I saw you. I don't know what happened, or why, but for some reason, as soon as I lay eyes on you, I realised that living was worth it. I know we are of two different worlds… but please, I can't without you."

Tears streamed silently down Eli's face. He didn't know why he was crying. Maybe it was hearing how he felt spoken aloud, or the knowledge that he wasn't the only one to feel that way.

All he knew was that all of his emotions were twisting and turning inside of him and his tangled mind seemed to straighten itself out.

The empty pit inside of him had shrunk.
