Veronica's POV
The kindergarten let out early today, so I collected my son around mid-afternoon. We made it back to the Nelson estate by late afternoon.
Daniel climbed out of the car behind me, craning his neck to take in the imposing grandeur of the family compound. He gave a little nod of approval.
"Pretty impressive," he seemed to think. "Dad's people have serious money. Mom won't have to scrape by anymore."
We headed toward the main house together. Along the way, we passed a servant struggling with an enormous vase. The moment his eyes landed on Joseph, he went rigid with terror.
"Joseph! Oh no!"
The poor man clutched that vase like his life depended on it, probably remembering how this kid had smashed several others just recently.
Daniel heard his name and politely dipped his head in acknowledgment before continuing alongside me.
The servant just stood there, mouth hanging open.
