Chapter 17 - We Are Cut From the Same Cloth

Undoubtedly, if categorized using the Dungeons & Dragons alignment concept, Hisoka would be classified as Chaotic Neutral. While his thoughts and actions are unpredictable, they are not entirely irrational, and he completely disregards the constraints of social order and moral norms.

Compared to the sheer evil and indiscriminate killing of the Phantom Troupe, Hisoka rarely targets ordinary people. He adheres to a set of rules unknown to outsiders: his victims are either Nen users or special individuals who consciously choose to approach danger despite being aware of the life-threatening risks—for example, candidates participating in the Hunter Exam.

He is enthusiastic about fighting powerful opponents and even more enthusiastic about nurturing seeds with potential, patiently waiting for them to take root, sprout, and eventually grow into towering trees. Although driven by the selfish desire of "preparing more toys for himself," it is undeniable that this method can rapidly stimulate potential, quickly enhancing the power of those with natural talent.

It is for this very reason that Allen neither prevented Hisoka from interacting with Gon, Kurapika, and Leorio, nor worried about their safety. After all, if even he could discern the astonishing potential of those three, there was no reason Hisoka wouldn't.

After resting briefly at the conclusion point of the First Phase, Hisoka abruptly appeared with a half-swollen Leorio, whose face looked like a pig's head, draped over his back. He casually dropped him under a large tree, a look of satisfied contentment on his face. Most importantly, the wild Aura that had been surrounding him had finally calmed down, no longer giving the impression that he might erupt at any moment.

"You seem pleased?" Allen asked, sounding him out.

"Ah~ Because I found a few more adorable little apples. Though they are still quite green for now, they will surely become incomparably delicious when they ripen in the future. Hehehehe…"

Hisoka chuckled maniacally, constantly fiddling with the playing cards in his hand.

"I'm curious, if you ever die at the hands of one of the apples you cultivated yourself, would you regret it?" Allen finally voiced the question that had been bothering him. Although he himself possessed a typical Transmuter personality, he couldn't comprehend the sheer enthusiasm, obsession, and even madness this man felt for combat. Especially how he constantly gambled his life, completely devoid of any fear of death.

"Oh? Should I interpret that as you issuing a declaration of victory to me?" Hisoka's eyes instantly sharpened.

Allen gently shook his head. "No, I'm merely curious; I want to understand the motivation behind your actions."

"Motivation? You'll understand as soon as our battle begins. Because, in a way, you and I are cut from the same cloth. You just haven't tasted the forbidden fruit yet, so some things in your mind haven't awakened," Hisoka said, lightly tapping his temple with a finger.

"The forbidden fruit…"

A subtle violet glow flashed across Allen's eyes, quickly returning to normal. In that brief instant, he seemed to sense something within his body about to break free, but for some unknown reason, it suddenly ceased and completely vanished. The feeling was so strange that he spent the entire subsequent Second Phase in a dazed state, desperately trying to recall and grasp that moment, completely forgetting that he was still participating in the Hunter Exam.

Fortunately, Lupos, sensing its master's unnatural state through their soul bond, voluntarily took charge of the Second Phase. The result was that everyone saw a massive silver wolf first swatting down a Great Stamp with one paw, expertly skinning and gutting it, then using its sharp claws to slice the meat into the required shapes, and finally, using the limited conditions, began cooking a magnificent feast, complete with excellent color, aroma, flavor, concept, and presentation.

In a short while, a rich aroma slowly diffused, making everyone involuntarily drool.

This astonishing sight stunned not only the inexperienced candidates but even the two Gourmet Hunter Examiners. While the world of Hunter x Hunter has no shortage of highly intelligent magical beasts, Lupos's appearance and biological structure proved, without a doubt, that it was merely a wolf. Yet, this wolf had not only mastered powerful Nen but also cooked a meal like a human—a meal which, judging by the aroma, was undoubtedly an absolute delicacy.

"Buhara! Did you smell that?"

Menchi, one of the Examiners, had eyes gleaming with curiosity and excitement.

"I smelled it, yes. That extraordinary aroma. And it looks incredibly appetizing, my mouth is watering," Buhara swallowed the saliva constantly generating in his mouth, his stomach rumbling audibly.

It must be noted that Lupos's cooking skills came from Allen's Cooking profession skill, which he had leveled to 300 proficiency, shared through their Spirit Bond. This meant he cooked at the level of the most elite professional chefs.

Moreover, the seasonings used were several magical ingredients from the magic-infused world of Azeroth, entirely foreign to this world, naturally igniting the intense curiosity of the Gourmet Hunters, who were eager to taste a flavor they had never experienced.

The moment the final dish was completed, Menchi was the first to rush forward, skewering a small piece of the succulent, dripping meat with her fork, placing it in her mouth, and closing her eyes to savor it. After only two or three seconds, she suddenly opened her eyes and loudly exclaimed, "Delicious! Magnificent!"

"Mmm! Mmm! Mmm! I completely agree!" Buhara quickly devoured nearly half the platter, a look of immense satisfaction on his plump face.

In just a few minutes, the feast made from an entire Great Stamp was completely wiped out by the two of them.

Undoubtedly, thanks to Lupos's outstanding performance, Allen, the master, passed this phase without doing a single thing.

The remaining candidates, however, were not so lucky…

With their taste buds thoroughly activated by the rich and delicious meal, the other candidates' undercooked or burnt meat, as well as flavors that were either too salty or too bland, failed to generate any enthusiasm from the two Examiners.

In contrast, the good-natured Buhara at least remembered his duty as an Examiner, letting most of the candidates who presented roasted pork pass. But the temperamental Menchi was different. The young Gourmet Hunter instantly succumbed to her occupational fixation, declaring that, with the exception of Allen, all other candidates were disqualified, even mockingly claiming that what they cooked was inedible even for a pig, which provoked a near-riot.

Hisoka took the opportunity to unleash his shocking killing intent, planning to fuel the chaos and cause an uproar. But before he could find the right moment to act, Chairman Netero descended from the sky, stopping the farce and redirecting the test to the challenge of retrieving Spider-Eagle eggs from a gorge.

While this was also extremely dangerous, with the risk of falling into the abyss, it was clearly much easier than satisfying a finicky Gourmet Hunter.

In a short time, all the candidates who passed the Second Phase boarded the Hunter Association's airship, heading straight for the location of the Third Phase of the exam.
