Chapter 60 - The Eye That Sees Too Much

Kairo couldn't sleep even if he wanted to.

He stood alone in the abandoned training yard behind the compound — moonlight cutting his shadow long across the cracked earth. Everyone else was asleep, exhausted from infiltration, laughter still faintly echoing in the night.

He envied the ease of their rest.

Kairo slowly unwrapped the scroll again. The ancient script shimmered, shifting like mist, responding to his blood. The air vibrated softly as the Mark under his skin awakened in a dull gold burn.

Focus the mind. Silence the heart. Let the Mark drink the world.

He inhaled.

The moment he activated Pure Eye, the world changed.

Wind threads glowed like silver veins.

The trees breathed softly, each leaf pulsing faint life.

In the distant barracks, sleeping warriors were stars of dim aether.

He staggered, gripping his head.

It was like hearing every whisper of the universe at once.

Too much.

He gritted his teeth, refusing to collapse.

Pain wasn't a barrier — it was a language.

And pain spoke truth.

He scanned the camp slowly, trying to narrow his vision — to filter.

Selene's aura flickered inside her dorm like violet flame.

Warm. Soft. Familiar.

It pulled at him.

He looked away sharply.

He couldn't afford attachments — not while he carried secrets.

Not while the Mark inside him felt like a sleeping titan, waiting for a mistake to wake teeth and hunger.

He exhaled, pushing again.

This time, he focused on a single falling leaf.

It became clear — breathtakingly so.

Every fiber, every vein, the dew hanging off its edge.

The world slowed like clock gears turning under his will.

His heart beat once.

Aether sharpened through him like a blade.

Pure Eye — Stage One: Perception.

He could now track movements no human eye should follow.

Hours passed like moments.

By dawn his hair was damp with sweat, breath calm, hands steady.

Mastery wouldn't be quick — but he had taken the first step.

As he wrapped the scroll and prepared to slip away, a soft voice cut the silence.

"Kairo?"

He froze.

Selene stood behind him, barefoot, eyes half-asleep, wearing a cloak over her nightwear. Moonlight caught her white hair like frost in water.

"You're training…" she said quietly. Not accusing — curious.

He forced calm into his voice.

"Couldn't sleep."

She stepped closer, searching his face like she was trying to see into him.

For a moment, he feared she saw the mark beneath his skin.

The scroll hidden under his cloak.

The future he wasn't ready to speak.

"You could have woken me," she said with a tired smile.

"We train better together."

The words hit harder than any blade.

She meant it innocently — but to Kairo, it felt like a warning.

Together.

A path that might not exist soon.

His replies were shorter now. Colder.

Not rude — just distant enough to be missed but felt.

"…I needed silence."

Selene blinked, the smile fading slightly.

"Oh. I understand."

But she didn't. Not truly.

Kairo turned away before she saw the conflict in his eyes.

If he stayed, he might explain.

If he explained, the burden might break her.

And he couldn't let Selene carry anything that belonged to him.

Not the mark.

Not the truth.

Not his fate.

He walked past her, voice low as passing wind.

"Sleep. Tomorrow will be heavy."

She watched him go — her expression softening into something unreadable.

Concern, maybe.

Confusion.

A tiny, imperceptible distance forming where warmth once lived.

She whispered when he was far beyond hearing.

"Kairo… don't walk alone."

But he already was.

Inside his room, Kairo hid the scroll beneath stone floorboards.

Before he lay down, he stared at his reflection:

Calm eyes.

Still breath.

But behind them — a storm preparing to arrive.

He shut his eyes.

The path forward was steep, bloody, inevitable.

Soon, missions would resume.

Soon, more scrolls would be stolen.

Soon, betrayal, corruption, disappearance, and return.

But for now — the world still slept in ignorance.

And the boy who would break it slept too.
