Chapter 46 - Shadows Among the Prodigies

Dawn broke over the Greek Village like a sheet of molten gold spilling over marble. The streets were waking, the prodigies stretching their limbs, and the elders murmuring prayers to the gods. Yet in the quiet alleys, two figures moved like whispers—Kairo and Selene.

They weren't wandering carelessly. Every step was measured, every movement a calculated balance between blending in and observing. Kairo's shadow Aether wrapped lightly around him, subtle enough to be invisible, yet enough to keep him aware of every flicker of energy around him.

Selene walked beside him, her aura soft moonlight that radiated calm, enough to ease any suspicion of passersby.

"Keep your distance," Kairo murmured, voice low, eyes scanning. "I can feel Lysandros somewhere nearby."

Selene nodded. "He's… watching. Curious but cautious. Don't give him reason to act."

Kairo's lips twitched—almost a smile—but he said nothing more. Words were unnecessary. Observing, learning, blending—that was the key.

The Plan

The Greek Village was divided into six clans: Zeus, Apollo, Ares, Athena, Hera, and Artemis. Each clan produced a prodigy capable of channeling Aether in ways most mortals couldn't comprehend. The gang's objective was simple but delicate: infiltrate, gather intel, test prodigies subtly, and extract information on artifacts without revealing themselves as dual Aether users.

Kairo and Selene were paired for the Zeus clan—home to thunder and lightning Aether. The shadows they cast seemed to stretch unnaturally long in the early morning light, unnoticed by the villagers but keeping every move under silent surveillance.

First Encounter

A young prodigy with hair like molten gold bounded forward. His aura sparked faintly, bright and hot, a naive but dangerous energy.

"You two," he called, puffing his chest, "don't belong here! State your names!"

Kairo stepped forward, silent, letting his eyes do the talking. His shadow Aether coiled just slightly, enough for the prodigy to feel a subtle pressure on his chest.

Selene spoke lightly. "We're travelers, looking to study your training methods."

The boy's aura flickered nervously. Something about Kairo unsettled him.

Kairo's voice was soft but firm, almost indifferent. "Observe and learn, then leave."

The boy swallowed, unsure. His fingers twitched as he attempted a small lightning burst—but Kairo didn't move. He simply let his aura stretch like a shadowy tether, absorbing the excess energy harmlessly. The prodigy stumbled backward, aura flaring unexpectedly as he realized the discrepancy in power.

Selene stepped in, voice calm. "We're here to observe, not fight."

Kairo didn't add a word. He didn't need to. The boy understood perfectly: he was outmatched.

Aura Farming

Later, in the secluded grove behind the Zeus compound, Kairo allowed himself a brief flicker of mobility training. Selene watched silently.

A small guardian creature—a lightning drake no taller than a horse—prowled the grove. Its Aether spikes glowed faintly, feeding on the storm residue lingering in the village air.

Kairo moved like liquid shadow, silent, precise. The drake lunged, jaws snapping with electricity sparking. Kairo sidestepped coldly, his shadow tendrils wrapping around the creature's limbs to immobilize it without harm.

Selene watched him, impressed despite herself. He wasn't flashy. He didn't shout. He didn't talk. But every move was efficiency incarnate—cold, lethal, and controlled.

As the creature's Aether dissipated into him, Kairo absorbed it smoothly, a silent smirk on his face unseen by Selene. Aura farming was more than survival—it was preparation.

Subtle Manipulation

Back in the village, Lysandros still trailed them discreetly. He hadn't spoken to Kairo since their courtyard encounter, but every instinct screamed that Kairo's control was beyond normal.

Kairo noticed him too, but only as a shadow in his peripheral vision. No acknowledgment. The silent intimidation was enough to keep Lysandros alert but not revealing.

Selene leaned slightly. "He's close."

Kairo's eyes, calm and unreadable, flicked toward the unseen watcher. "Let him watch. Learning from a predator doesn't hurt."

Small Test of Prodigy

Later that day, a child of Apollo attempted to provoke Kairo by calling attention to his shadow aura. "You're hiding something!" the boy exclaimed, fists sparking with solar Aether.

Kairo's eyes narrowed, the first sharp glance he'd given all day. Shadow coiled like a living thing, wrapping around him as he stepped forward—cold, silent, deadly. He didn't speak. He didn't move quickly. Yet the boy stumbled back, overwhelmed by the aura's sheer pressure.

Selene, observing, almost laughed. "You didn't even touch him."

Kairo's lips twitched, expression neutral. "I didn't need to."

The boy collapsed, drained of his overextended Aether, aura faintly absorbed into Kairo's reserves. Subtle, controlled, and entirely non-lethal.

End of Day Reflection

As dusk painted the village in golden shadows, Kairo and Selene returned to their guest quarters.

Selene broke the silence first. "You're… scary when you stop talking."

Kairo didn't respond immediately. His gaze was fixed on the horizon where lightning still flickered faintly.

Finally, he said, "Silence is strategy. Words are unnecessary when power is obvious."

Selene smiled softly. "You make it too easy for people to underestimate you."

Kairo gave a single nod, shadow aura faintly pulsing around his shoulders. "They'll learn… eventually."

And as the moon rose over the Greek Village, the shadows they cast whispered of secrets, hidden abilities, and silent dominance. The villagers still had no idea that among them walked dual Aether anomalies, gathering knowledge, testing prodigies, and preparing for the true challenges yet to come.
