Chapter 74 - The Fracture That Answers Back

Kael sat on the edge of the medical platform, his hands trembling despite the stabilizing field humming around him. The glow beneath his skin had dimmed, but it hadn't disappeared. It pulsed in slow, deliberate waves — not random, not chaotic.

Patterned.

Intentional.

Alive.

Eliora stood at his side, refusing to leave even when the med-techs insisted she give him space. She crossed her arms and glared until they backed off. Now she paced in a tight circle, her eyes darting constantly back to Kael as if afraid he might vanish.

"Whatever that thing was," she muttered, "it wasn't just a projection. It reacted to you. It… knew you."

Kael exhaled shakily. "It felt like seeing a memory I never lived."

Her steps stopped abruptly."Kael… are you still you?"

The question hit him like a blow.He looked up slowly.

Her eyes weren't accusing — they were terrified.

He forced a breath. "I'm me. But something else is waking inside me. And it won't stay quiet."

Eliora stepped closer, touching his cheek with trembling fingers. "Then we keep it quiet together."

Before he could answer, the door slid open sharply.

Commander Rhyne strode in.

But he wasn't alone.

Behind him entered a woman Kael had never seen — tall, sharp-featured, wearing a long coat laced with resonance-calibrated fibers. Her presence filled the room like a charged storm. Her gaze fixed instantly on Kael.

Eliora bristled."Who are you?"

The woman smiled faintly, the expression too controlled to be genuine.

"Dr. Aerin Solace. Chief Resonance Psychometrician."

Kael frowned. "You're… the one who studies anomalies?"

"Studies, contains, and neutralizes them," she corrected lightly. "When necessary."

Eliora stepped in front of Kael instinctively.

Rhyne raised a hand. "Easy. She's here to help—"

"No," Eliora said sharply. "She's here because she thinks Kael is dangerous."

Dr. Solace's smile didn't falter."Perception can be a useful tool, my dear. But in this case? I don't think he's dangerous."

Eliora blinked.

Dr. Solace stepped closer to Kael, her eyes studying the faint glow under his skin like a scientist examining a rare star.

"I think," she murmured, "he's unprecedented."

Kael stiffened. "What do you want from me?"

She tilted her head, her tone shifting to something darker.

"To understand why something outside reality recognizes you."

Eliora moved to block her view again."Back. Off."

Dr. Solace actually chuckled. "Protective, aren't we? Interesting."

Rhyne sighed under his breath. "They've been like this since the incident."

"Good," Dr. Solace said. "He's going to need an anchor."

Eliora's chin lifted.

Dr. Solace turned her attention fully to Kael.

"When that… Echo appeared, it triggered a resonance spike across the entire district. People reported visions involving you. Meanwhile, your anomaly activated a sequence we've never recorded."

Kael's voice dropped. "What sequence?"

She held out a small device. At its center a holographic sphere spun, fractured into glowing arcs. It moved in a rhythm Kael recognized instantly—

Because it matched the pulse under his skin.

"This," Dr. Solace said, "is the pattern you're emitting."

Kael's stomach tightened."It's the same as the Echo."

"Yes," she said softly. "Which means two things. One: whatever woke inside you is connected to that entity. And two—"

Her gaze sharpened.

"—you're becoming a beacon."

Eliora's breath hitched."A beacon for what?"

Dr. Solace answered without hesitation.

"Others like it."

Kael froze.

Eliora grabbed his hand. "We don't even know what 'it' is."

"We will," Dr. Solace said calmly. "But we must stabilize him before the next phase begins."

Kael swallowed. "The Echo called it 'Claiming.' What comes next?"

Dr. Solace's voice dropped to a whisper.

"Emergence."

The lights in the room flickered.

Eliora's grip tightened.

Kael felt a spark ignite beneath his ribs — a whisper threading through his mind, quiet but unmistakably real:

"We are not done."

He closed his eyes, jaw clenched.

And Eliora whispered fiercely:

"Kael… whatever is coming next, you're not facing it alone."

He opened his eyes.

And for the first time since the Echo appeared, he allowed himself to believe her.

Even as the anomaly inside him stirred again, like an answer.
