Chapter 1 - Ember Burned

By J. Lindsay

Prologue:

"Today is a nightmare." I whisper as I lace up my black combat boots. I finish, and take a long look in the mirror before using concealer to hide the large purple bruise covering my jaw and the hand print necklace around my neck. I wrap my scarf around my neck to hide those bruises. I walk gingerly through the bathroom door into my bedroom and see the sleeping monster on my bed, snoring loudly, finally content.

"Never again" I whisper softly as I grab my duffle bag from the closet and slowly, quietly, I walk from the room, down the hall, and out the front door leaving everything behind me. I look back up at the cute two story house that has been my home for the past 2 years, and tears fill my eyes as I wish things were different.

"You fucking bitch! Don't you run away from me Ember!" Sebastian screamed at me, grabbing a fistful of my long red hair before slamming me face first into the wall. The pain was overwhelming as I cried out. "Why do you insist on making me do this to you, Em? You make me this monster!" He shouts, then licks a path up my cheek, swallowing my tears.

"Please," I cry, "Please don't do this again, I'll be good, I promise!" The air feels stagnant, but chaotic around me. His arms tighten around me, my breasts pinned painfully against the wall of our bed room. One of his hands slides up my chest and caresses my neck gently, lovingly, before he wraps his fingers around my throat and squeezes so hard I can't breathe. Spots dance in my vision as I claw at his forearm. He keeps me pressed against the wall, yanking up my dress. I feel him reaching in between our bodies and he unzips his jeans and pulls his cock out. "Please" I whisper.

"I love you, Ember. You belong to me. You don't so much as look at another man, or I will kill him and then fuck you on his bloody corpse". He snarls at me through gritted teeth. Without warning, he kicks my legs apart, and bends me forward slightly before slamming his cock inside my pussy. I try to scream out, but his hand around my throat keeps me from emitting any sound. "You're mine…." He whispers in my ear.

I flinch, coming back from the flashback of last night. I know I have to disappear. I've been saving up for this moment for the past year. I walk as fast as my battered body will take me to the bus station. I'll take a bus as close to the airport as I can get, then I'll fly from Georgia to California. From there, I'll take the train to Vancouver, BC. The college I chose is far enough away that Seb won't be able to find me. I dump my cell phone in the dumpster at the bus station and buy my ticket from the lady at the counter. I get on my bus, find a seat, and take a deep breath.

This is fine, I think, I'm starting my new life, safe from that monster. The bus starts moving, I close my eyes and a small smile forms on my lips.
