Chapter 67 - The Crater

They woke slowly, silently, almost reluctantly. The rain had stopped some time ago, leaving behind a cold dampness that clung to their skin and clothes. Saturated with water, the ground had darkened into something heavy and lifeless, as though the earth itself were struggling to breathe. Kenzo was the first to open his eyes. Still half-numb with sleep, he could feel the weight of the previous day's march in every muscle. Around him, the others remained asleep, huddled close together beneath Madame, who had not moved throughout the night. For a few moments, he stayed exactly where he was and stared at the sky. The stars were gone, replaced by a pale, uniform veil. It was not gray, however. This was not the sky that heralded the arrival of the fog. It was simply empty. Far too empty.

The others gradually began to wake. As usual, Naty was the first to stir after him. Ophelia followed, sitting upright at once, perfectly alert despite the discomfort of the night. Lucian woke last, blinking repeatedly, as though still caught somewhere between sleep and reality.

— « It doesn't look like it rained for very long, » Lucian murmured, glancing around.

— « Long enough to make the ground dangerous, » Naty replied as she carefully placed a foot on the soaked earth. « Watch where you step. »

Kenzo nodded. He still sensed nothing. No hearts. No presences. That absence was beginning to feel more unsettling than sensing too many creatures at once.

They set out without delay, continuing south through a region where the trees gradually thinned until nothing remained but a vast expanse of exposed earth, broken only by dark rocks and shallow cracks. The silence was oppressive. Even the wind seemed reluctant to enter this place. They walked for hours, exchanging little beyond what was necessary. The exhaustion of moving without any clear destination weighed on them far more heavily than the physical strain. Every step carried them farther from the forest they had slowly learned to understand—hostile though it was—and deeper into territory none of them knew.

Kenzo walked at the front, his senses stretched as far as they could reach. He searched for the slightest disturbance, the faintest tremor in the air, but nothing answered. Not even the distant, dull sensation that usually warned him of a Void Creature dozens of meters away.

It's as if everything here is dead… or as if something has already devoured it all.

— « Still nothing? » Naty eventually asked, breaking the silence.

— « Nothing at all, » Kenzo answered without turning around.

Ophelia frowned slightly.

— « Me neither. And yet… » She stopped, struggling to put the sensation into words. « …the unease isn't fading. »

Lucian swallowed and tightened his grip around the hilt of his sword.

— « The air feels… heavy. »

They continued until the ground began to change once again. The earth beneath their feet became firmer, almost glasslike in places, as though some overwhelming heat had once struck it with enough force to melt its surface. Kenzo instinctively slowed.

— « Wait. »

He crouched and pressed his hand against the ground. The surface was cold, but there was something unnatural about its texture. It felt like an ancient scar.

— « Look around, » he said.

Naty was the first to notice.

— « The ground is sloping downward… »

She was right. Ahead of them, the earth gradually dipped. This was no ordinary depression. The farther they moved, the steeper the slope became, forming an immense, uneven circle, as though the land had collapsed in on itself.

— « It's a crater… » Lucian whispered.

All four of them stopped at its edge, and the sight before them left them speechless. The crater was enormous, wider than four or five Minor Trees placed side by side. Its walls spiraled downward, carved through with deep cracks, some still blackened as though they had once burned. Despite the daylight above, the bottom lay shrouded in an unnatural gloom.

Kenzo felt his stomach tighten. This place had not formed naturally.

— « It looks like something fell here… » Naty murmured.

— « Or something climbed out, » Ophelia corrected quietly.

Kenzo closed his eyes and focused with everything he had. This time, he felt something. Barely. A faint pull from far below. It was not a collection of presences like the hearts of the Void Creatures within the fog. This was one. Singular. Massive. Slow.

His eyes opened, his breathing suddenly shallow.

— « There's something down there. »

Lucian went pale.

— « A Void Creature? »

Kenzo hesitated.

— « I don't know… but it doesn't feel like the others. »

They began descending carefully, following the natural slope into the crater. Every footstep echoed strangely, as if the ground amplified even the smallest sound. The deeper they went, the colder the air became. Still. Frozen.

Ophelia stopped without warning.

— « Wait. »

She slowly lifted her head, her eyes fixed on something ahead. Her expression had gone rigid.

— « I can see something. »

A shiver ran down Kenzo's spine.

— « A flame? » he asked immediately.

She slowly shook her head.

— « No… not a flame. »

They moved a few meters farther, and then they saw it.

At the exact center of the crater, resting within a perfectly circular hollow, stood what at first appeared to be a gigantic cocoon. But as his eyes adjusted, Kenzo realized that the cocoon was only a small part of what lay before them. The entire bottom of the crater was covered by a colossal network of spiderwebs. They stretched in every direction, layered over one another in thick sheets, forming something like an organic fortress. Some strands were as broad as walls. Others hung like torn curtains, joining the ground to the crater's sides. Together, they created an enclosed structure of hardened silk, almost architectural in its design. Passages and openings could be seen between the layers, as though something had deliberately built a labyrinth around the center.

And there, at the heart of that tangled stronghold, protected behind walls of webbing, lay the true cocoon. It was immense, yet compared to the structure surrounding it, it seemed almost small. Its surface was formed from translucent, organic layers, threaded with dark veins. Slow, regular pulses moved through it.

It did not glow. It breathed. Deeply. Patiently.

With every pulse, the webs around it trembled almost imperceptibly, as though the entire crater were connected to the thing at its center. The world around it seemed frozen, as though even the forest had stopped trying to reclaim this place.

Kenzo felt his heart hammer against his ribs. This was not a resting place. It was a sanctuary. A womb. A fortress built to protect something that was not yet ready to be born… or to awaken.

There could be no doubt anymore. Something was sleeping down there.

And they had just found it.
