"Oh, I'm sorry, Alex, I couldn't be here for you," she said, resting a hand on her belly as she spoke. "It's my seventh month, and the doctor has asked me to get plenty of rest. My husband usually handles everything, but he's out of town today, and I was just too tired."
"Oh, he hasn't come back yet?" I asked, keeping my tone light but concerned.
"Yeah… the thing he went for will take another day, so he decided to stay the night there," she said, looking down at her hands, a little sad. She clearly missed him, her fingers resting protectively on her belly.
"Oh, don't worry, Shyla," I said, leaning in a little closer with a warm smile. "Why don't you come with us to the hot springs? It'll be relaxing, good for you and the baby. We're all going tonight."
Her eyes lit up for a second, then she hesitated, glancing at her belly. "I don't know, Alex… I'm supposed to rest, and the floors would be slippery there."
"Oh yeah, that's not safe," I said, keeping my tone light but firm.
