Chapter 18 - Shadows in the Quiet

The molten glow of the courtyard faded behind her as Aria walked alongside Selene and Riven. The heat still clung to her skin, and the echo of exploding bone shards and spiraling air magic thrummed in her chest. Every step across the obsidian tiles seemed heavier now, the ground still humming faintly from the shockwaves of her magic.

"You handled him well," Selene said quietly, eyes flicking to where Radek had disappeared, nursing his bruised ego. "Radek will challenge you again. He never learns the meaning of humility."

Aria adjusted the strap of her satchel. "I noticed. He's… predictable." Her voice carried a calm she didn't entirely feel, like a mask she wore for the world.

Riven flicked a tiny flame across his palm, grinning. "Predictable? You basically threw him across the arena. Next time, maybe warn me before your 'practice' starts. I almost jumped out of my skin."

She rolled her eyes but laughed softly. "You need to toughen up. This is Ashwright."

Walking beside them felt grounding. For the first time, she didn't feel like a solitary shadow moving through the academy. The camaraderie made the air feel lighter, less like the constant pressure of unseen eyes.

Selene hesitated, lowering her voice. "People are already talking — about your new spells, the way you combined necromancy with elemental reinforcement. Some are impressed, others… wary."

Aria's pulse ticked faster. She'd hidden most of her necromantic work, but whispers traveled faster than spells. "Let them talk," she said, firm, though tension coiled in her stomach. "I didn't come here to please them."

Riven laughed, sparks flicking from his fingers. "And don't blow anything up before breakfast tomorrow. Varra might start charging tuition for collateral damage."

Aria smirked, the corners of her mouth twitching with relief. Despite everything, walking with friends made this moment almost normal. Almost.

By the time they reached the dorm steps, the sky had darkened into deep violet, the volcano's heat softened to a low hum. Shadows stretched across the courtyard, curling and shifting as if alive.

"Don't vanish on me, Death-Touched," Selene said, her tone teasing but serious. "I'll come find you if you do."

"I doubt you'd get far without Riven lighting the way," Aria replied, smirking at both of them.

Riven bowed mockingly. "I am your human torch, always at your service."

Aria laughed lightly, a sound she hadn't realized she'd missed. But even as the warmth lingered, the shadows pressed in once she closed her dorm door behind her.

Alone now, she sank onto her bed, wrapping her arms around her knees. The silence pressed against her like a living thing. Val'kor's words echoed in her mind: "Your enemies will not wait for mastery. They will not forgive mistakes."

Her pulse carried a faint hum from her magic — a reminder of what she was capable of, and what she hadn't yet shown anyone. She remembered Radek's flailing spells, the way her new Bone Shard Volley and Shadowed Bone Lash had cut through his attacks. It worked… but what if I can't do that next time?

Her thoughts wandered to the visions she had glimpsed of the cult: dark rituals, symbols glowing in the shadows, figures moving silently with intent. The Old God's followers were already active. Midterms will test me in ways I'm not ready for.

She clenched her hands into fists, feeling the pulse of magic beneath her skin, and let herself imagine the possibilities. Elemental bursts woven into her necromancy. Bone shards carrying fire, air, and earth to pierce stronger defenses. Her mind raced through strategies, contingencies, and ways to protect those who depended on her.

A soft creak from the corridor made her sit upright. The dorm was quiet — too quiet. No footsteps. No whisper of her friends. Only the echo of her heartbeat and the faint pulse of magic in the walls. She swallowed, shivering, and let herself breathe out.

I will survive. Whatever comes, I will survive.

Her thoughts lingered on Selene's words, Riven's teasing, and the whispers of classmates watching her new abilities. She could feel the weight of expectations pressing down — both her own and those of Ashwright Academy.

Her eyes fell to the floor, tracing the shadows that curled like smoke along the edges of her room. The quiet wasn't comforting. It was preparing her. Something was coming — she could feel it in her bones, in the pulse of magic lingering beneath her skin.

And when it came… she would be ready.

The next morning, as the first molten light of the volcano bathed the academy in gold and crimson, Aria tightened her satchel straps and stepped toward the courtyard once more. The routine of classes, of lessons, and of growing stronger awaited her.

Today… she would start preparing for Elemental Theory, the next layer of her ever-expanding arsenal. And perhaps, just perhaps, she would finally glimpse how all her skills — bone, shadow, air, fire — could be woven together for the challenges ahead.
