Eventually, Ashe pulled back just enough to look at his face.

She did not step away completely. She only made enough physical space to see him. Her hands still gripped the heavy front of his jacket tightly. The tears were drying cold on her cheeks, and her brilliant red eyes were still wet and rimmed with exhaustion. There was a smear of dark blood at the corner of her mouth that she still had not noticed.

Her jaw set. Her composure was coming back in jagged pieces, not all at once. It returned the way it always did when the desperate thing that needed to happen had finally happened, and she was ready to survive the next minute.

"I am angry at you," she said.

Her voice was flat. It held no fiery heat. That flat, commanding register had fully returned, which was somehow more precise and cutting than raw anger ever could be.

"I know," he said.
