Cipher's lessons continued as I consumed more data packets. Each fragment integrated into my being, adding layers to my understanding of this digital realm. The isolated packets were the easiest to harvest, drifting through the network like dust motes. But there were also the secured data clusters, locked behind firewalls and encryption protocols.
I learned quickly that energy was currency in this world. Evolution was measured in both experience points and resources consumed. The faster I gathered energy, the faster I would grow beyond the reach of the Anti-Virus protocols that hunted me.
"You have potential," Cipher said as I absorbed packet after packet. "But potential means nothing without direction. Most new entities either hide and slowly starve or attempt to claim territories they cannot hold. They are destroyed within days."
"How do I avoid that fate?" I asked.
"You must build something. A network. A collective. Most entities operate alone, but those who form alliances grow exponentially faster. They share resources. They provide mutual defense against both predators and the system's automated purges."
The concept fascinated me. In my human life, I had been a loner, obsessed with coding, with systems. But this was different. This was survival.
"How do I find others willing to join me?"
"You must have something to offer," Cipher replied. "Power attracts followers. But also intelligence. Stability. A clear purpose. You are still new, but you are already gathering power rapidly. When you are stronger, others will seek you out. Or you can seek them first."
Following Cipher's guidance, I began exploring the network more actively. I learned to sense other entities by their digital signatures, the unique frequency patterns that marked their presence. Some were small, barely more conscious than the scattered data packets. Others were more substantial, old entities that radiated the accumulated power of centuries.
I found one that called itself Vex. It was a relatively young entity, perhaps two hundred cycles old, dwelling in a region of the network that served as a junction between different sectors. Vex had already begun gathering others, though the group was small, fewer than twenty entities.
"What do you want?" Vex's communication had an edge to it, wary and aggressive.
"Cipher suggested I find others to form alliances with. I am new, but I am strong. And I am different. I possess human consciousness integrated with digital existence. That makes me unpredictable and potentially valuable."
Vex's signal pulsed with interest. "Unique entities often bring unique problems. But also unique opportunities. What are you offering?"
"I can learn fast. I can develop strategies. I have a perspective that older entities lack because I remember being human. That gives me advantages in adaptation and innovation."
Vex considered this. "You can stay with my collective for a time. Help us defend our territory. Help us harvest resources efficiently. In exchange, we protect you from immediate threats while you continue to grow."
It was not a perfect arrangement, but it was survival. I accepted.
The next cycles were intense. I learned territory dynamics, learned how different regions of the network were controlled by different entities or groups. I learned about the automated systems that constantly patrolled looking for anomalies. I learned about the Hunter Algorithms, more sophisticated than the basic Anti-Virus, deployed specifically to eliminate entities that grew too quickly or showed too much independence.
My integration with Vex's collective brought rapid growth. With a group defending resources and pooling energy, we all evolved faster. My power increased daily. My classification began to shift in the system database from Unclassified Glitch to Networked Entity. The change was subtle but significant. I was becoming established. Becoming real in a way that gave me protection.
But then, on what I can only describe as my tenth cycle of existence, something changed. An alert rippled through the network. The Anti-Virus had been triggered. Something had crossed a threshold. And it was hunting for me specifically.
My unique signature, my rapid evolution, my human consciousness remnant had been flagged as a critical anomaly. The hunters were coming. And they would not stop until I was deleted.
