CHAPTER 27 WHEN MEMORY GOES LIVE
Memories don't ask permission to survive.
But when they're broadcast… they turn into sharp blades, slicing straight through the heart.
---
The PLAY button flared blindingly, like an inescapable curse.
Warehouse 9 drowned in cold, white light that pierced every crack in the rusted metal. Giant screens hanging in the air snapped on in rapid succession, forming a wall of gazeshundreds of soulless eyes staring down.
The first sound wasn't words. It was wind. Wind howling through narrow corridors, carrying the smell of damp mold and old metal vibrating with low, groaning echoes, like whispers from hell. The space was unfamiliar… yet achingly familiar to Evelyn. Her heart clenchedan invisible punch to the gut.
Cut to Eclipse Tower. The secondary system jolted awake; the living room screens flickered without warning.
Diego cursed through gritted teeth, voice rough: "Damn it."
Viktor lunged to the console, fists clenched: "He's hijacked the signal."
Evelyn froze. The image showed no facesjust a tiny room, dim yellow light, walls stained with mold. The room before Blackhaven.
Her heart pounded, threatening to burst from her chest.
"Don't look," Viktor whispered, his warm hand settling on her shouldera gesture both protective and powerless.
But Evelyn didn't turn away. She had to watch. She had to face the ghost tearing at her soul.
---
A voice echoed from the screensnot V.S.'s. It was her own, younger, trembling like an autumn leaf:
"If I go with you… will I have to pay a price?"
The male voice replied, low and calm in a way that sent chills down the spine: "No. Just remember… who opened the door."
Diego ground his teeth, knuckles white: "He's editing. Cutting pieces to twist the truth."
Viktor nodded, eyes darkening: "Anything that makes him look bad… gone."
The screen raced forward: A door creaked open. A long, endless hallway. Footsteps pounding, thudding like a panicked heartbeat.
Then Evelyn's choked voice: "Don't call me yours."
In the present, Evelyn clenched her fists until they bled, nails digging deep into her palms. "Stop," she whispered, voice breaking. But the screens didn't stop. They devoured her.
---
Back in Warehouse 9, V.S. stood tall before the wall of screens, eyes glued to every frame, breathing heavy.
"They'll see," he told his men behind him, voice thick with warped triumph. "She didn't leave out of fear. She left because she couldn't face it."
One thug sneered, the sour smell of sweat filling the air: "You're betting the whole city just to relive an old love story?"
V.S. whipped around, eyes flashing: "No. I'm asking a question."
He stared straight into the central camera, smile ice-cold: "Vee… do you still remember this room?"
His words stabbed like needles. Evelyn felt them through the screena pain coming alive, ripping through her insides.
---
Eclipse Tower. Evelyn stepped closer to the screen, breathing hard. Viktor reached to pull her back, but Diego raised a hand, eyes showing rare respect: "Let her."
Evelyn stared at her past self, her own voice ringing outfirm, even as her heart bled: "You're not telling the whole story. You're only telling the part you want."
The screens shuddered, as if they'd heard her. The scene shiftedto a segment never broadcast before.
Evelyn's voice, sharp as a blade: "If you need me to remember forever so you can keep existing… I'm sorry. I'm not obligated to carry that."
Warehouse 9 erupted in chaos. V.S. staggered, face paling for a split second. He hadn't expected thisthis clip had survived.
Diego smirked at Eclipse: "She left a back door. Damn smart."
Viktor looked at Evelyn, something shifting in his gazeno longer possessive, but genuine respect, deep as an abyss.
---
Alarms blared, red lights flashing wildly, the air thick with smoke and burning metal.
"Intrusion!" one thug shrieked.
The warehouse doors exploded inward. Smoke billowed in, carrying the sting of gunpowder.
Viktor and Diego emerged from the hazetwo shadows of pure violence, terrifyingly familiar.
Viktor locked eyes with V.S., voice like ice: "End this game."
Diego stood angled, gun ready, tone razor-sharp: "Or I'll end it for you."
V.S. looked at them, smiling faintly, sweat beading on his forehead: "You got here fast." Then to the camera: "Vee, see? They came for you."
Evelyn's voice crackled through the internal speakersfrom the rear entrance. She was already there, heart racing but voice steady: "No. They came because you're using my past as a weapon."
V.S. spun around, face twistingthe first time he lost composure, eyes wild. "You shouldn't be here."
Evelyn stood tall, cold wind whipping her face: "And you shouldn't be broadcasting things that aren't yours."
Viktor stepped half-forward, shielding her, growling: "Hear that? She's not your stage."
Diego added with a sneer: "And you're not the director."
V.S. looked at Evelyn one last time, voice trembling with rage: "You really think you can escape?"
Evelyn answered, calm in a way that terrified even herself, even as her insides knotted: "I'm not escaping. I'm moving forward."
---
V.S. closed his eyes for a secondraw pain of betrayal flashing through his chaotic mind.
Then he laughed, loud and unhinged. "Fine." He signaled with his hand.
Every screen went black. The warehouse sank into suffocating darkness, broken only by ragged breathing and lingering smoke.
"Phase two," he whispered, voice dripping with hatred, "won't be this gentle."
He melted into the shadows, vanishing through a side exitleaving behind the faint scent of cheap cologne.
Diego started after him, but Viktor blocked him firmly: "No. He wants us split up."
Diego ground his teeth, stoppingrage boiling inside.
Evelyn stood in the middle of the warehouse, exhaling a long, trembling breath. She looked at the two men, eyes glistening but resolute: "Thank you. For not deciding for me."
Viktor met her gaze deeply: "We just stood beside you."
Diego nodded, voice rough: "This time."
In another dark corner of Blackhaven, V.S. opened a new dossier, hand shaking slightly with fury.
The first pae held only:
"PHASE TWO: MAKE HER CHOOSE."
Below it, three names in blood-red:
EVELYN SINCLAIR
VIKTOR VORAK
DIEGO SERRANO
