Chapter 151 - Chapter 151: The Sea of Floating Pages

They did not hit the ground. They hit a page.

Lina gasped, rolling onto her side as the breath was knocked out of her lungs. The surface beneath her was not stone or dirt. It felt like giant, hardened parchment. It was smooth, pale, and smelled overwhelmingly of old dust and crushed pine soot.

"Mira?" Lina coughed, pushing herself up. "Seren? Is everyone okay?"

"I'm here," Nia groaned, sitting up and rubbing her head. Reyon and Seren were a few feet away, slowly getting to their feet. They were all bruised and battered, but alive.

Lina looked around, and her breath caught in her throat.

They were not in a cave. They were in a realm that defied all logic.

The sky above them was not made of air or clouds. It was a vast, torn canopy of white parchment, stretching out for miles. Giant, glowing characters of black and gold calligraphy floated in the sky like constellations, shifting and rearranging themselves in slow, hypnotic loops.

Beneath them, the "ground" was a sprawling archipelago of floating islands. Each island was made of stacked, massive scrolls and folded paper. Connecting the islands were bridges made of thick, sweeping brush strokes that hung in mid-air.

And flowing between the islands, defying gravity, were rivers of thick, black ink. The ink flowed upward, spiraling into the sky like dark ribbons.

"We fell into the Forge," Lina whispered, standing up. She looked at her right hand. The raw, red skin where the Censor's mark used to be was healing. The golden word Kai was completely dormant, hidden deep beneath her skin. She was just a mortal girl here.

"It's beautiful," Seren whispered, her eyes wide as she watched a river of black ink spiral into the sky. "But it's so loud."

"What do you hear?" Reyon asked, stepping close to her.

"Not voices," Seren said, shivering. "I hear scratching. Millions of brushes writing at the same time. It's the sound of history being erased and rewritten."

Lina looked out across the floating islands. In the very center of this surreal landscape, miles away, was a massive structure. It was a colossal, black inkstone—the traditional tool used to grind ink sticks. It was the size of a mountain, and it pulsed with a slow, heavy rhythm.

Thump. Thump. Thump.

"That's the core," Lina said, pointing at the giant inkstone. "The Primordial Inkstone. That's where the entity's physical heart is. If we destroy it, the Quill dies."

"Then we walk," Nia said, her voice firm. She drew a heavy, iron dagger she had kept hidden in her boot. "Since our cultivation is suppressed, we do this the hard way."

They began to cross the first bridge of solid brush strokes. The ink beneath them hissed and bubbled.

As they reached the next island, the environment changed. The stacked scrolls gave way to a valley of white jade statues. There were hundreds of them, kneeling in perfect rows, their heads bowed.

Lina walked up to the nearest statue. It was carved in the likeness of a young woman in ancient robes. But her face was completely smooth. No eyes, no nose, no mouth. Just blank, white jade.

"These aren't just statues," Mira said softly, touching the cold stone. "Look at their hands."

Lina looked. The statues' hands were clutching small, glowing golden threads.

Seren closed her eyes, listening to the echoes of the valley. Tears instantly spilled down her cheeks. "They are the people the Quill consumed," she sobbed. "The First Founder didn't just kill them. She rewrote their entire existence. She took their true names and turned them into blank pages. They are trapped in a loop of having no identity."

A deep, rumbling growl echoed across the valley, shaking the jade statues.

Lina spun around.

The river of black ink flowing beside the island had stopped spiraling into the sky. Instead, it was pooling on the ground, rising up and twisting into a massive, serpentine shape.

The ink thickened, hardening into scales made of sharp, black calligraphy. A massive head formed, with two glowing, hollow eyes made of white parchment. It was an Ink Dragon. A guardian of the Forge.

The dragon opened its jaws, and the sound of a million tearing pages blasted across the valley.

"It's made of pure, corrupted text," Nia yelled, raising her iron dagger. "Physical weapons might not work!"

"Then we don't fight it with weapons," Lina said. Her eyes darted around the floating islands. She spotted a cluster of giant, glowing golden characters floating near the dragon's tail. They were the characters for Weight and Anchor.

"Reyon! Mira!" Lina shouted. "Distract it! Get it to turn its back to the floating text!"

The dragon lunged, its massive jaws snapping toward Seren. Reyon tackled her out of the way, rolling across the parchment ground. Mira threw a handful of crushed jade dust into the dragon's eyes. The beast roared, blinded for a second, and whipped its massive tail around.

"Now, Lina!" Nia screamed.

Lina didn't use magic. She used her momentum. She sprinted forward, leaped off the back of a kneeling jade statue, and launched herself into the air.

She reached out and grabbed the glowing golden character for Weight.

The moment her skin touched the text, the character flared to life. It was heavy. Incredibly heavy.

Lina slammed the glowing golden character directly onto the back of the Ink Dragon's neck.

The effect was instantaneous. The golden text burned into the black ink. The dragon let out a shrieking wail as the concept of Weight forced itself into its body. The creature, which had been floating and fluid, suddenly became as heavy as a mountain.

It crashed down onto the parchment island, crushing the ground beneath it. The black ink began to boil and evaporate under the sheer, crushing pressure of the golden text.

The dragon dissolved into a puddle of harmless, ordinary black water.

Lina landed gracefully on her feet, breathing hard. She looked at her hand. The golden character had faded, returning to the sky.

"We can use the environment," Lina realized, a fierce smile touching her lips. "The Quill writes the rules of this world. But we can use its own words against it."

She looked toward the massive, pulsing inkstone in the distance.

"Keep moving," Lina ordered. "We have a heart to break."
