The heavy oak doors of the belfry swung shut with a final, echoing boom. The four senior teachers stepped into the room, blocking the only exit. Their faces were calm, their hands resting casually at their sides, but their eyes were completely dead.
"You used us," Lina said. Her voice was low and dangerous. She pushed Mira behind her. "You let the water rise. You let the reflections out. You let Kai turn to glass."
The Headmaster chuckled. It was a dry, papery sound. "We allowed the pressure to build, yes. The cage requires fear to stay sealed. The glass requires sorrow to remain strong. You children provide such wonderful, raw material. Your trauma is the mortar that keeps the deep thing asleep."
He took a slow step forward. "But the sphere was cracking. We needed a catalyst. We needed a student brave enough, and foolish enough, to offer their own identity to the Quill. You volunteered perfectly, Lina."
"You are monsters," Nia spat. She tried to raise her hands, but her blue magic only sparked weakly before dying out. She was too exhausted.
"We are survivors," the Headmaster corrected smoothly. "And now, the sphere is golden. The cage is secure for another century. Your purpose here is fulfilled. Teachers, bind them. Take them to the lower cells. We will need to harvest their remaining memories to feed the foundation."
The teachers raised their hands. Thick, gray ropes of magical energy shot from their palms, slithering across the stone floor toward the students like snakes.
Reyon tried to dodge, but without his shadow, he was too slow. A gray rope wrapped around his ankle. Mira screamed as another rope lunged for her.
Lina didn't think. She just reacted.
She stepped in front of Mira and threw her hands up to block the magic.
But as the gray ropes approached, something strange happened. Lina didn't just see the magic. She saw the words that made it.
Floating in the air, written in dull, gray script, were the commands the teachers had cast. Bind. Hold. Subdue.
When Lina's mind had been wiped completely blank, the golden ink of Kai's true name hadn't just left her. It had soaked into the empty space. It had rewritten her very soul. She was no longer just a blank page.
She was the Quill.
Lina reached out and grabbed the gray magical rope with her bare hands.
The teacher who cast it frowned. "Foolish girl. You have no magic left."
"I don't need magic," Lina whispered.
She looked at the gray words floating in the air. With her thumb, she literally smudged the word Bind.
The gray rope around Reyon's ankle instantly turned into harmless white dust and blew away in the wind.
The teachers stopped. The Headmaster's smile vanished.
"What did you just do?" the Headmaster demanded, his voice losing its polite edge.
Lina looked at her hands. Beneath her skin, faint golden lines pulsed in time with her heartbeat. She looked up at the teachers. The air around them was filled with their spells, written in clumsy, arrogant script.
"You write your magic like you own the world," Lina said. Her voice echoed with a strange, dual resonance, as if two people were speaking at once. "But your grammar is terrible."
She swept her hand through the air. She didn't just smudge the words this time. She crossed them out.
A massive shockwave of golden light blasted from her palm. It hit the four teachers squarely in the chest. Their spells shattered like cheap glass. The teachers were thrown backward, crashing into the stone walls and sliding to the floor, unconscious.
The belfry fell dead silent.
Mira, Seren, Nia, and Reyon stared at Lina in absolute shock.
Lina lowered her hand. The golden light faded from the room, but the golden script remained, swirling gently beneath her skin. She turned her gaze to the Headmaster.
The Headmaster backed up a step. For the first time, genuine fear flickered in his cold eyes. He looked at the giant golden sphere, then back at the girl who had just erased his senior teachers with a swipe of her hand.
"You are not a student anymore," the Headmaster whispered, his voice trembling. "What are you?"
Lina took a step forward. The stone floor cracked slightly beneath her shoe.
"I am the author of this story now," Lina said. "And I am rewriting the rules."
