Chapter 33 - Just a Joke

I jump out of the building I'm in onto the street, taking advantage of the fact that no one is watching. I just wanna get this over with I'll go in, ask how I can sign up with the magical girls, and leave as soon as I'm done.

Of course, I've thought ahead about what to say. A magical girl's weapons, magic, and outfit say a lot about her, so what I show will define a lot of things for me.

Obviously, I wanna play a support role. My weapons are divided into short, medium, and long-range categories, but even though I have 3 weapons, none of them make me an incredible fighter or a team's main attacker, leaving me more as a strategic support that I kinda like.

Sure, I can only reveal one of my weapons, and I'll choose the pistol. It's not the strongest weapon, but it's not the weakest either. With a pistol, I can hold my own in a fight.

The problem is the magic. The uniform doesn't have much I can do about my outfit is unique, that nice white one, but I can't change it because it's my standard uniform and that's all I've got.

The biggest difference I can make is to take off the top part, just leaving the dress instead of the white jacket that comes with it. It's a complex outfit, but I don't think it indicates much about me overall.

Basically, right now I'm in my full magical girl uniform and I'm not gonna change anything about it because I don't think it makes that much of a difference.

So that just leaves the magic. What can I tell them? My magic is time travel, and the magical shots from my gun, I'm not sure if those count as magic. Of course, there's the liquid obsession, but showing that would be problematic.

Plus, I don't even know how to use that properly it just happens automatically, just like I automatically know how to use the weapons even though I've never had any weapons training.

For now, I'll just go in and try to say something, anything. If they ask about my magic, I'll try to make something up.

I just take a deep breath and appear in front of the entrance, opening the door and seeing various people walking around some are obviously magical girls, and others are normal humans.

They seem to coexist well here, but I think it's pure stupidity to let normal humans work here. Their minds could be controlled by monsters, and they could become enemies.

They're only useful if there's a magical girl who can tell if they're being controlled, and even then, it still wouldn't be 100% safe.

But something soon catches my attention, and I see that white owl at the reception desk, and it notices me too, and we just stare at each other.

"..." There's an uncomfortable silence as the receptionist in front looks at us. The owl moves its wing as if telling the receptionist to wait, and then flies over to me.

"Hello... you're... that girl from the classroom, it seems I wasn't mistaken, you really did look at me," the angel says, stopping in front of me.

"...Who are you?" the angel asks.

"Just a humble magical girl from an equally humble origin," I respond, a bit more apathetic than I'd like.

"...Can you tell me which angel gave you your powers?" he asks me.

'So he has no way of identifying that I made a contract with a demon,' he seems doubtful as he looks at me.

"I'm sorry, but I can't say that. I hope you understand, I want to protect my privacy," This question of his could be a trap. Of course, I don't expect him to be as smart and manipulative as Hexael, but this question could make me more suspicious.

Since Hexael said there are no other angels on Earth, I'll just leave the mystery in the air.

"I understand, the privacy of a magical girl is important... did you come without registering as a magical girl? If so, you just need to go talk to the leader on the top floor..."

"Since I don't know you, you'll need to inform me of your weapon, magic, and a few other things," the angel says to me responsibly.

'So the magic and weapons of each magical girl are reported by the angel.' This is useful to know it means they don't use any magical form of discovery, they just trust the word of the angel who, in theory, knows each magical girl.

"Okay, thanks for letting me know. I'm heading that way then," I say, passing by him.

"Wait..." He says, making me stop and look at him.

"Is there a problem?"

"Why did you ignore me before?" He asks about why I ignored him in the classroom.

"..."

'Oh, right...' This is a difficult question to answer. If I'm just a magical girl, I shouldn't have ignored an angel.

"I... have social issues and fear causing unnecessary distress or exposing myself too much. As you must know from following Ayane, I have some rather unpleasant mental issues, and I prefer to keep to myself," I use my mental problems as an excuse.

Since I have difficulty feeling emotions and have an unusually strong aversion to physical contact, it makes sense for me to try to stay discreet.

"I see, well I apologize for detaining you. Unfortunately, I don't have much time to teach you things like I did with others you really showed up at a bad time for that,"

"But don't worry, I'll try to help if you need it. The magical girl leader will teach you those things. Any other questions, ask a veteran or someone similar."The angel says, letting it go.

"Also, if you came here, I believe you must know at least some things, which will make it easier for you to learn. And I also appreciate you trying to befriend Ayane she really values the gesture."

'Why does this angel have such a fixation on Ayane?' I wonder after seeing how this angel has so much interest in Ayane it's clearly abnormal, not an equal interest.

It's practically blatant favoritism, as if Ayane is special in a way that others aren't.

"Of course, I do know some things, and Ayane is a really nice and cheerful person. I'm also enjoying the little friendship that's forming between us, even if I may not express many things."

"But Angel, I do have a question could you answer it for me?" I notice some magical girls are looking at me, and with our enhanced attributes, they're no doubt overhearing the conversation.

"You can just call me Septarion, and yes, go ahead and ask your question, and I'll see if I can answer."

"Why do you have favoritism towards Ayane?" I hear a magical girl spitting out her water, and some conversations pause, as if I've said too much, but Septarion doesn't seem to see a problem.

"Oh no, I don't have any favoritism. I apologize if it seems that way. It's just that Ayane has a lot of potential, but she's a bit naive and immature as a magical girl, and I'm giving her extra support to help her adjust to this new life, which can be quite difficult."

'Liar' Angels may be treated as good, but this was a lie. I know it's a lie because Septarion even in Ayane's diary spent a lot of time with her he only reduced that time after she was broken and became weaker.

In other words, the time he spent with Ayane compared to other magical girls was much greater, and he only stopped spending so much time with her when she became so broken that her powers were reduced and her determination was damaged to an irreparable point.

"I see, she really will need a lot of help, it seems... and me?" I question, leaving the angel confused.

"Huh?"

"Don't you think I need help too? I'm just a weak, new magical girl... but I wasn't taught anything," I speak, putting him in a difficult situation. I'm intentionally a bit shaking his image.

"H-Haha, I'm sorry about that... it's just that I didn't know about you..." He speaks honestly, because he really didn't know.

"Shouldn't you have known? I'm also a magical girl, why didn't I receive any support when I needed it?" I speak in an accusatory tone, making the atmosphere uncomfortable.

Several people pause their activities momentarily to observe the scene, while Septarion seems nervous and even sad.

"I'm really sorry... I... should have paid more attention to new magical girls. I didn't even know about you, and... I know that's not an excuse, I'm truly sorry if you had any problems."

"...Haha, it's okay, I'm just joking. I really don't mind that at all," I say, stopping him from starting to bow a little to me. He looks at me confused, as do the others.

"I'm sorry, it seems I'm terrible at jokes. You know I have issues with emotions, and I was just trying something new. I'm sorry if that made you feel bad."

"I guess... that's why I don't have any friends. I'm just a strange girl who doesn't understand boundaries," I say, breaking the strange atmosphere and positioning myself as a girl worthy of pity rather than suspicion.

"O-Oh! Yes! Haha, I understand, it was a joke. It seemed so serious for a moment, I forgot about your issue with emotions and thought you were really judging me."

"Yes, I'm sorry my jokes are unfunny. Actually, I haven't had many problems as a new magical girl. I've only just recently appeared and haven't acted much yet."

"Okay, I wish you good luck," Septarion says with what I think is a smile. It's hard to tell since he's an owl. Everyone goes back to their work, and the atmosphere calms down.

'Not bad...' I did this stupid little act to remove the suspicions Septarion has of me. First, I put the blame on him for bad things, and then I pretended it was just a poorly calculated joke.

"Yes, I wish you luck too, Septarion. I'll be going to the top floor to see the leader, is that okay?"

"Of course, she's a really nice person, just like everyone here. I'm sure you'll make friends regardless of any issues you have they're all very welcoming," Septarion says, and the atmosphere is completely normal again.

I go to the elevator I see, stopping the acting. I may not be as smart and manipulative as Hexael, but I know how to do this well because society favors the smarter ones who know how to use other people's emotions.
