Chapter 25 - Findings

Kai stands in front of a small building. Fran beside him as she stares at the building as well.

Beside the building under it's own roofing, rows of mail boxes. Just out in the open. Just in front of the small building looks like a mechanics dream. A building just a bit bigger than the place Kai and Fran are standing in front of.

Many people going in and out of it, mostly men. As they laugh, carry supplies, smoke or start drinking a bit. They all seem to be fixing up something inside, obvious from the sound of drills going off or the sound of a hammer clacking loudly behind the white walls.

Fran: "Not as big as I thought."

Kai nods in agreement, as they stand staring at the place. A car, blacked out behind them.

Kai: "I'll go inside. You just wait out here."

Fran: "Why don't we both go in?"

Fran tilts her head as she asks the question.

Kai looks at her then answers.

Kai: "I don't want the mayor of this place to think we want him to be ganged up on."

Kai tries to make her understand.

Fran nods and goes back to the car. Entering the driver side.

Kai goes inside, opening the front glass door that shows the inside from the outside. Kai is greeted with a wall, then he turns left, down a hallway is a woman that stands behind a desk, with a plaque beside it that says, Receptionist, right beside it is what her name is, Annie.

Annie is an old white haired, woman. Her face has heavy wrinkles. with glasses so think it's outrageous to think she can see through it. Her hair styled into a big afro, even though her skin doesn't complement her hair style she has it. And it doesn't look bad.

Annie: "Hello my boy. Is there anything that I can do for you?"

Annies voice is soft, yet it has a scratchy undertone to it.

Kai nods.

Kai: "I'm here to ask about Stone and then about his work life."

Annie: "Yes... Poor Stone. If we had known sooner about his mental health we probably wouldn't have such a tragedy on our cases."

Annie says, with her voice going saddened.

Kai nods again.

Kai: "So would it be possible for me to talk to the mayor and ask a few questions?"

Annie tilts her old head, her afro, following on top of her head.

Annie: "I'm sorry my boy, but the mayor will only talk to authorities if it's about Stone."

Kai nods once more. He then digs into his pocket and pulls out a badge that says he's a detective the same one he used to enter the Stone residence.

Annie has to squint her eyes, even with those thick ass glasses to see what it is.

Annie: "Ahhh. I'll call him and ask if he can come over for you. In the meantime you can just sit on one of the chairs."

Kai looks behind him. Flushed against the walls are four different colored, cushioned chairs that are most likely for guests that'll have to wait.

Black, Blue, Black, Purple.

Kai walks up to one of them. The black one. He sits down.

Annie picks up the cellphone and dials in numbers. After four rings, the other person answers, Annie speaks just quietly enough for Kai to not hear her, then Annie hangs up the phone.

Annie: "My boy the mayor said that he'll be here in fifteen to twenty minutes."

Kai nods.

Kai: "I'll say here till he arrives."

Annie: "Okay."

As time passes Kai stares in front of himself, his eye don't seem to blink to Annie but, that isn't at all true.

The minutes pass and Annie feels like she's had to hold her breath because of the now porcelain looking boy in front of her. That's a bod thing because Annie's age isn't in the position in which she can be holding her breath.

After fifteen minutes pass, someone enters through the glass doors that Kai entered and Kai sees them first because Kai is at the walk, whenever Annie has to try and lean forward to see who it is.

The man that walks in is wearing a brown jacket that looks like it has fur at the collar, but is most likely just cotton puffed out. Jeans and Tims.

The man has a combover with his straight black hair, his eye is black and he's light skinned brown.

He walks down the hallway. Greeting Kai, Kai waves back.

Annie then sees him. A smile appears on her face then she lets out a sigh.

Annie: "Mayor Brown. This is who wanted to talk to you."

Kai stands and then pulls out the badge not wantint to waste time like before with Annie.

Kai: "I'd like to talk to you about one of your employees Stone who sadly committed suicide the other day, if you haven't heard."

Kai's voice never changed to sound sullen he just gave out what happened and didn't sound sad about it whatsoever.

Mayor Brown nods and waves his to follow.

Brown: "Come we can talk in my office."

Kai follows as Brown begins to walk down another hallway, this time, this one was narrow.

The walls felt like they would have been touching him if he moved a tad bit to the left or to the right.

After the hallway, they both entered into an office, that was pretty spacious for the place. Brown went around a desk that was in the middle of the place, and the room was decorated with many different photos. Other people besides himself, that shook his hand and people that were children, maybe his.

The room was decorated brown, to match the desk place. Brown went to a big chair behind the desk. The desk had one photo that wasn't visible to Kai but there was also a big laptop on the desk.

Kai enters fully closing the door behind him.

Brown puts his hand in front of himself, inviting Kai to sit on the only chair in this place that isn't behind the desk.

Kai accepts and sit.

Kai: "Mr. Brown, I'd like to ask about your other employee that you had working on the same day as Stone. If i remember his name was Salem?"

Brown shakes his head.

Brown: "Mr..."

Implying to ask for his name.

Kai: "Kai."

Brown: "Mr. Kai, I would understand if you would like to know how I treated my employees, but I won't just give you the location of one of my others just cause you asked."

Kai: "I'd like to personally ask him, myself if that's okay?"

Brown shakes his head.

Brown: "Salem is a minor, and I'll not give his housing location or anything personal to him."

Kai sighs. Understanding that is true.

Kai then has to take this act serious. Asking a butch of questions that a cop would normally ask if they were to proceed with an investigation.

Kai eventually asks one last question for his own personal investigation.

Kai: "Where meadow did they work on during both Salem and Stone's shift?"

Brown tilts his head.

Brown: "Let me show you."

Brown leans back and behind his side he pulls open a drawer and pull out a map of Guam. He lays it flat on the table, then gives directions right to the meadow that both Salem and Stone were suppose to finish.

Brown: " This is the meadow that they were suppose to cut before Stone decided to call me and say that both of them felt to sick to finish and that they'll do it another day."

Kai pulls out his phone takes a picture, then stands up.

Kai: "Thank you Mayor Brown for your help today."

Brown: "Your welcome, Mr. Kai."

Kai opens the door leaves and walks out the door. Going through the narrow hallway, passing Annie as she waves, he doesn't wave back. Enters the other hallway, to the glass door and right to the open passenger seat of the car.

Fran jumps up surprised at the sudden opening of the door, Kai just hops into the car.

Kai: "Why didn't you lock the door?"

Kai said what genuine concern in his voice.

Fran: "We have a gun in the center console."

Fran lifts the cover, grips the gun by the hilt and pulls it out.

A black Glock 19 Gen 5. One that she holds pointed down with her finger away from the trigger.

She does that just to show it to Kai. After he nods, Fran puts the Glock right back before she starts the car.

Fran: "Salem?"

Kai shakes his head.

Kai: "Mayor Brown wouldn't tell me."

Fran: "So where do we go?"

Kai pull out his phone, then the photo of the area.

Kai: "Go there."

Fran steps on the gas, softly. getting to the streets then drives at almost forty as she goes toward their destination.

Kai just looks at the window at the passing people. Many seem to be wearing dresses if not, They seem to be local walking around with their shirt off.

***: "Mommy Save me!"

Kai hears a voice distant as Fran continues away from it.

The voice sounded scared, very scared. The voice made Kai perk up his ears, but there was one thing Kai saw before he the voice disappeared. A tall lady wearing a hat, walking on the sidewalk with a little boy.

Kai wants to stop but, that not his current investigation.

10 Minutes Later

Both Kai and Fran get to the same place that Salem and Stone were the day that Stone unfortunately ended his life.

They parked on the grass. As they park they see the same thing Salem and Stone saw. The white, wiggly thing. Kai reaches into his pocket and pulls out his badge, then he flips the badge again.

Under the badge is a piece of paper, that reads out words, that Kai reads out.

Kai: "This world has no need for a demon. Return to hell."

As he says that, as if enveloped by flames and dragged to hell it burn, turns to ask then dissipates.

Fran: "What was it?"

Kai: "A KuneKune. This place really is The Den of Cryptids."
