Chapter 71 - Metamorphosis: Mystique

The things Eric created were beyond the current capabilities of human technology. His control over metal through magnetism allowed him to create machines with zero error, a feat that alone surpassed human technology.

Error, no matter how you corrected it, was impossible to eliminate entirely. Machines weren't perfect; they were bound by the constraints of physics and mathematics, and those constraints, fundamentally, lacked a perfect data point.

Eric had created many things: Professor Charles's mental amplifier, his steel city at sea, and the mutant-creation device right before him.

This device, which used powerful magnetism to twist human DNA and forcibly awaken their X-Gene, had proven viable through his experiments. However, the device had a fatal flaw: it needed an operator to make it function.

This high-precision instrument couldn't even run on energy, as the electromagnetic force inherent in the energy source could cause errors in the device. Only one possibility could make this machine function at one hundred percent efficiency: a magnetic controller using all their power to manipulate the device's trajectory at near-light speed.

And there was only one magnetic controller in the world capable of such control: Magneto, Eric Lehnsherr.

However, even with Magneto's immense power, activating this device required a massive expenditure of mental energy. Expanding the device's influence would require him to use all his strength. And for a mutant, using all their power was equivalent to death. Their power came from the supply of their body's cells; exhausting their abilities was like draining every last drop of their life.

Eric wasn't afraid of death, but his work was unfinished, and he hadn't yet seen the dawn of his goals, which prevented him from dying at this moment. He had initially planned to seal this device away, saving it as one of his final trump cards. But the appearance of Rogue gave him a new idea.

He was different from Professor Charles. He didn't mind sacrificing a mutant's life to gain an advantageous position for mutants. And in his eyes, Rogue was undoubtedly an excellent sacrifice. A valuable sacrifice to make the future of mutants brighter.

Although Professor Charles' students had disrupted his plans, he was confident he could regain control. To this end, he had dispatched his most trusted assistant. He was waiting, waiting for good news from this favored assistant.

It wasn't long before Eric received a message from his assistant.

"Eric, are you there?" A hoarse, mature female voice came from the communicator. The first impression of such a voice was that it belonged to a woman with a lot of experience.

"Of course!" Eric opened his eyes and responded. "Speak, Raven. I can't wait to hear your good news."

"It might not be considered good news." The woman named Raven replied calmly. "I've searched the entire academy, but I haven't found any trace of the target. It seems our old friend has moved her."

"Raven, time is running out. We need that girl." Eric raised his voice, seemingly wanting to convey his urgency to Raven.

"Alright, give me some time. I need to take a risk." Raven replied lightly. This seemingly frivolous tone, however, put Eric at ease. Because he knew that when Raven spoke like this, it meant she was absolutely confident.

"I'll await your good news!" Eric closed the communication device and began to meditate again. Meanwhile, in the grove near Xavier's School for Gifted Youngsters, a woman with a strange appearance had already begun to move.

This woman had red hair, brown-yellow pupils, and a figure that was alluring enough, but her body was exceptionally strange. A layer of blue covered her entire body, including her limbs and face, the parts that were visible. This was not paint or anything like that, but a real existence, similar to skin. Even at her key points, there were scale-like things covering them.

The reason for explaining this is because she wasn't wearing clothes. Yes, she wasn't wearing clothes, this is important, so it needs to be said twice.

There was no clothing covering her body. This exposed some of her key parts to the sunlight. Although she was covered by strange skin, one could still see some clues if they looked closely. However, she didn't show any signs of concealing herself because of her strange appearance, but instead walked very naturally. As if this problem didn't bother her at all.

And the fact is, it didn't bother her. Perhaps this problem existed a long time ago, but beside Eric, she was no longer troubled by this problem. Mutated and proud, this had become her life's creed.

However, with her appearance, even walking in Xavier's School for Gifted Youngsters, which was full of mutants, she would still attract many gazes, and she didn't seem to worry about her appearance. Because soon, her appearance underwent a shocking change.

It was as if a layer of waves was surging on her skin, and then the change occurred in this wave-like surge.

Her body began to slowly shrink, and her red hair turned into a thick, flaxen-colored student haircut. Her originally curvy figure also became a thin, flat, short appearance. At this moment, she could no longer be recognized as her original self. Instead, she had completely transformed into another person.

A small, thin boy with flaxen hair, wearing oversized clothes and large glasses, looking no older than seven, stood before him.

This was a student from the youngest class at Xavier's School for Gifted Youngsters. Because of his age, he always received the most comprehensive care in the school, not only from the teachers but also from many of the older students.

In essence, they were like a family. And this child was the recognized little brother of this big family. As a little brother, he always had privileges.

Walking from the woods into the garden, then quietly sneaking into the interior of the manor. She seemed unusually familiar, not even needing to ask or look; she found her way to the place she was looking for just by relying on her instincts.

Seeing the little boy sneaking in alone, Scott, who was still correcting papers, raised his head, looking somewhat surprised.

"Alex, what are you doing here? Is something the matter?" Although he wasn't in the best mood, Scott patiently spoke to him. He didn't want to let his emotions affect the youngest student.

"Teacher Scott!" Her voice had also completely changed, sounding exactly like a six or seven-year-old child. "Do you know where the new sister went? She said she would watch TV with me."

"The new one, you mean Marie?" Scott walked over, squatted down, and stroked the child's hair, saying softly, "I'm sorry, Alex. That new classmate went out with Teacher Ororo for something, and she probably won't be back until after Christmas. Maybe you can wait, or let the other brothers and sisters accompany you."

"Really?" She sounded a bit disappointed, as if someone had actually stood her up. "She promised me. Sorry, Mr. Scott, for the interruption."

With that, she scurried off. Scott watched Alex's actions, completely baffled. He didn't understand what was going on, just a little puzzled. Why could that girl named Marie get so close so quickly to the most isolated kid in the school?

However, preoccupied with his own troubles, he didn't dwell on the matter. He just shook his head and sat back down, wearing a sour expression. He had a lot of work to grade; because of his bad mood, he'd increased the students' workload, which also increased his own.

He hadn't graded much when, soon enough, another person walked in. This time, it was a woman. Her status was a bit special; she wasn't a student at the school, but a parent of a student.

Not everyone could accept their child becoming a mutant. Some, out of their own paternal or maternal love, openly accepted their children's changes. And in order to give their children a safe environment, they sent them here. The woman before him was one such parent.

For the teachers at the school, they were very familiar with these parents. Because not many could accept them. So Scott quickly stood up and greeted the woman.

"Mrs. Halder, what brings you here? Sorry, I had no idea you were coming, I wasn't prepared at all." Scott was very embarrassed, because it wasn't easy for the woman before him to come here. She was a single mother from New Jersey, and she needed to give an enormous amount to support herself and her child. Despite this, she was filled with deep love for her child.

So, no matter how you looked at it, she was a mother worthy of respect. And it was precisely because of her great maternal love that Scott was willing to receive her with the utmost sincerity.

"Sorry to bother you," Mrs. Halder said apologetically, adjusting her somewhat worn coat and sitting stiffly in the chair Scott pulled out for her. "There are some things I need to discuss with Ms. Ororo. Is she here?"

"Oh, is that right? I'm so sorry." Scott replied apologetically. "I'm really sorry, but Ororo isn't at school right now. She might be gone for a while! Is there anything I can help you with?"

"I'm so sorry!" Mrs. Halder pursed her lips, looking embarrassed. "You know, some things are not convenient for me to discuss with you. Can I ask when Ms. Ororo will be back? I don't mean any harm, it's just that it's not very convenient to come back and forth."

"I understand!" Scott nodded in understanding. He knew Mrs. Halder's living situation very well and understood that this woman's life was not easy. Taking time to come to the school could very well have a negative impact on her work. So he didn't beat around the bush, because wasting this woman's time would undoubtedly make her life more difficult. Scott didn't think he could do such a thing.

So, he said very clearly.

"Ororo went to Paris yesterday and probably won't be back until after Christmas. If it's okay, I'll have her contact you when she returns, or she can visit you directly, okay?"

"Then I'll trouble you, Mr. Scott!" Standing up, Mrs. Halder bowed slightly, showing good manners. This was also this lady's consistent performance; poor but never humble, both in her upbringing and in her heart, she was truly a noble person.

"No problem, ma'am. I'll see you out!" Scott escorted the lady out of the school gates and onto the bus to New Jersey. It wasn't until he returned to school that he felt anything was wrong. Because everything was normal. His work continued, and for him, the heavy workload might need to continue until late at night.

On the other hand, the well-mannered Mrs. Halder had gotten off the bus to New Jersey at the next stop.

She walked alone into a secluded forest, and waves of ripples surged across her body. Soon, Raven's form replaced the woman's, appearing in the forest. At this moment, she had obtained the information she needed.

"Paris?" Raven frowned. "That's a long way away."
