Chapter 68 - Reputation Value, Future Choices

"Different, yes. I'm referring to your abilities; that's the biggest difference between you and normal humans. But for people like us, except for a few of you, the rest of you don't affect us much. Some of you can fly, but we have our own planes. Some of you can teleport short distances, making you invincible on a small field. But we also have a whole team serving us. Some of you can bypass obstacles, ignoring layers of protection. But honestly, if you don't take my things, it doesn't affect me at all."

"However, these abilities of yours have an impact on ordinary people who rely on them. And that's where the root of the problem lies."

"Look, we're always a minority. We need the vast majority of ordinary people to work for us, not you. If we have to choose, most of us will choose the position of those ordinary people, not yours. As for why, it's simple: interests. The interests they create are greater than the interests you create. So, the key to your problem isn't us, the people in power, but those ordinary people."

"Humans are a very narrow-minded race; they have original sin. It's not me who said this; it's in the Bible. And one of the original sins is envy. Your differences make the ordinary people around you envious, there's no doubt about it. Just like my sister's ability, if I had her ability, maybe I'd be a baseball player now instead of a businessman."

"Look, even I'm envious. Not to mention those ordinary people. Once they think about what you have and they don't, they definitely won't feel good. At this time, if someone provokes them a little, resentment will inevitably arise."

"Sir, can I ask why?" A young man stood up. "Have we interfered with them? Why should they envy us? Aren't they unreasonable?"

"Young man, can I ask your name?" Zhou Yi asked while smiling, motioning for the young man to sit down.

"Bobby, I'm Bobby!"

Having gotten the young man's name, Zhou Yi continued to explain.

"Alright, Bobby. Let me give you an analogy. If, because you're a mutant, you've never been sick and never been to a hospital – in fact, Ororo told me you guys don't really get sick. But your siblings aren't like that; they suffer from all sorts of illnesses. Do you think they'd be jealous of you?"

"Sir, I don't know. I have a younger brother, and though we're not super close, it shouldn't be to that extent." Bobby looked troubled, clearly not knowing what his brother was thinking.

"So, let's extend this hypothesis. You know, even though we have a healthcare system, going to the hospital for illness still costs money. Maybe it's not a big deal for a family. But what about when there's a comparison?"

"Your brother isn't as healthy as you, and while you're running around, he's taking medicine and listening to your parents' endless nagging. Do you think he'd be comfortable? Would he be jealous of you?"

"When your parents are always obliging to your health and constantly nagging at him, treating him like a baby. Do you think he would be?"

Seeing Bobby's expression, unsure how to answer, Zhou Yi waved his hand and changed the subject.

"Sir, if what you're saying is that our differences are the cause of our situation, then isn't there a solution? We don't want to be like this, these abilities are innate, and we can't control them. If it were possible, I really wouldn't want to live this kind of life." A girl stood up, speaking with some agitation. Zhou Yi took a look at the girl; she had wrapped herself up very tightly. Even indoors, with the heating on, she was still wearing a coat and gloves, only revealing a cute little face. However, this little face was full of worry.

"Child, there is always a way. But I hope you'll think about your choices after listening to what I have to say, okay?"

The girl nodded seriously. Zhou Yi could tell that she was truly taking his words as a guiding light. This made him feel a little pressured. After organizing his thoughts slightly, he continued his topic.

"Before this, I said that you have two problems. One is difference, and the other is reputation. Now let's talk about the issue of reputation. I want to ask, who is the most famous mutant you know or have heard of?"

"I'll tell you my answer, it's Professor Charles and a man called Magneto. I know them because I'm an arms dealer, and these two were once the fuse for a potential war, the largest since World War II. And who do you know?"

The students chattered, but what they said was completely unconvincing. The most famous person in their mouths turned out to be Sharisse, which was a joke.

Pressing down with his hand, Zhou Yi suppressed the voices from the students and continued his explanation.

"I believe you all know how unreliable your answers are, right? That's right. You yourselves don't know who is famous in your group, and those ordinary people know even less. But we know some people, but they won't come out to represent you. This leads to a problem: you have no spokesperson. The only one among you who can speak for you is a man named Hank McCoy. Believe me, except for some government personnel, most people don't even know he exists. Perhaps they see him as an actor in a plush toy coat."

"I didn't mean to insult Mr. Hank, I'm just stating a fact. But I still want to apologize to him, because I know this person exists, and he is a respectable and wise gentleman. But you, does anyone know you exist? Does anyone know the good or bad things you've done?"

"No one represents you in public, and no one protects your reputation. Do you know why some politicians use attacking you as a political achievement? It's simple. Because no one will cause them trouble because of it. Ordinary people won't, and we won't. And you yourselves won't either. Your reputation is being trampled on, but you don't defend it. Some mutants even use extreme methods, and maybe you feel it's satisfying, but what's the actual effect? It just makes those ordinary people who pay attention here look down on you again, which is harmful to your reputation."

"Do you know why I'm talking about this? Because there's a solution. Compared to ordinary people, you have the ability to protect your reputation."

"Just like Robert Downey Jr. After he used drugs for so many years, didn't he regain public acceptance with a Superman movie? In fact, you can do the same."

"You have the ability to do things to reverse your image problem and improve your reputation. Although your reputation isn't good now, you can blame your predecessors for leaving you such a mess. But it's not beyond repair."

"So, what should we do?" It was Ororo who asked the question. If there was anyone who was most worried about the future of mutants, it was definitely her. You can't understand how difficult their situation is unless you're in the environment of mutants.

"The method is simple: do it, use your abilities to help people. Reality has proven that humans are happy to accept those who can help them, just like that black guy who flies around in the sky in New York all day long. Doesn't he slowly accumulate his heroic reputation through such means? You know, I recently participated in a fundraising event for an orphanage, and the most requested items by those children were no longer candy and toys, but that guy's figurines. I think making me into a figurine might not be as popular as him. So, the problem lies here. He and you are both guys with superpowers, why can he do it, but you can't?"

"You mean, let us become superheroes? You must be kidding." Ororo's face was filled with disbelief, but Zhou Yi was very serious.

"Why not? This is the choice I'm offering you. Do you want to live as mutants hidden among ordinary people, always in fear, constantly trying to conceal your differences? Or do you want to be a superhero with an extraordinary reputation, upholding justice, enjoying the cheers and support of the people, and taking pride in your differences, even making those ordinary people proud of your differences?"
