Chapter 105: The Magician
"This past month, whenever she called me, there was a smile in her voice. I could tell she was truly happy."
Chen Yu listened quietly.
Before this, he only knew that Ling Yue was talented, a rich sugar momma, gentle in personality, and had a bit of social anxiety.
It turned out this was the reason behind her social anxiety.
"That child... she's also very stubborn," Ling Wenhe's tone softened completely. "I could tell that back when she went straight to the Chen family to break off the engagement."
"Once she decides on something, a team of oxen couldn't pull her back. I wished she would just stay a pampered princess of the Ling family, but she seems to admire her mother greatly and insists on killing fierce beasts..."
Chen Yu frowned, sensing something was off. "Uncle Ling, what are you getting at?"
Ling Wenhe paused, looked up at Chen Yu, and gave a stiff, awkward laugh. "Hah, getting old makes you ramble."
"I know your character, kid." Ling Wenhe's smile was incredibly forced, the words practically popping out of his mouth one by one: "If you two are dating, then... just date!"
Chen Yu: "..."
If we were actually dating, I'm pretty sure I'd be leaving this house in several different garbage bags right now.
"Alright, that's enough. They're still waiting in the garden. Don't disturb me while I record my experimental data." Ling Wenhe shooed Chen Yu away.
Chen Yu scratched his head, feeling that Ling Wenhe was acting weird.
Do all old fathers succumb to brain rot when it involves their daughters?
The iron tower in the center of the Capital was the most eye-catching structure in this bustling metropolis.
Cast from dark alloy, the structure pierced dozens of stories into the gray sky. The body of the tower was engraved with densely packed silver runes.
The platform at the spire—a restricted area of the Alliance—was currently occupied by four figures in black robes standing silently.
They were Zhang Li, the Old Hag, and Rose, who was dressed in a Victorian Gothic dress.
Zhang Li's hands hung by her sides, her fingertips subconsciously gripping the hem of her cloak. It was hard to tell if she was nervous or excited.
The Old Hag remained huddled in the shadows.
Rose stood at the forefront, her black high heels perched on the edge of the platform, the hem of her dress lifting in the wind.
She raised a hand to adjust the veil on her hat, her gaze falling on the ceaseless stream of traffic below. The emotion in her eyes was intriguing.
Suddenly, the sound of extremely light footsteps came from the platform entrance.
Zhang Li and the Old Hag whipped their heads around. Their previously relaxed postures instantly tensed, and they bowed their heads in unison.
A middle-aged man in an oversized black suit walked over.
His appearance was extremely ordinary. If you threw him into a crowd, no one would give him a second glance. His face held absolutely no expression.
His hair was combed neatly. When his numb, dead eyes swept over the group, it felt as though he could see through their black robes and straight into their thoughts.
He carried a briefcase under his arm. His pace wasn't fast, yet he carried an invisible pressure. He didn't stop until he reached Rose.
"Lord Magician!" Zhang Li spoke first, her voice filled with unconcealed reverence—even more deferential than when she faced Rose.
The Old Hag bowed so low her face almost touched the floor.
"Apologies. I was working overtime," the man addressed as 'The Magician' nodded slightly.
Then, his gaze landed on Rose, his tone as flat as if discussing the weather. "This is the first plan you've spearheaded since joining the organization. Are you confident?"
Rose turned and curtsied slightly, her originally indifferent tone now carrying a weight of seriousness. "Please rest assured, my Lord. I am fully confident."
"Oh?" The Magician raised an eyebrow and pointed at the iron tower beneath their feet. "Tell me the source of your confidence."
Rose raised her hand, pointing a slender finger toward the foundation of the tower. Her voice was clear: "On the surface, this iron tower is used to repel fierce beasts and shield against the perception of high-ranking monsters."
"But beneath it, an Eighth Order Beast Emperor is suppressed."
"The Alliance uses the rune array on the tower to lock away its power, then borrows its terrifying pressure to drive away beasts within a hundred miles of the Capital. That is how the Capital became a 'Beast-Free Zone'."
The Magician's eyes darkened as he looked at Rose. "How do you know this?"
"The Alliance hasn't exactly hidden the secret under the tower shallowly."
Rose immediately replied, "It is thanks to Zhang Li."
"When she was undercover in Lanjiang, she encountered a woman named Lin Lan. The seal on this tower had loosened before."
"It was that woman who acted to suppress it again. Of course, she paid a price for it."
"Lin Lan... I recall her. She has ruined our plans many times." The Magician's gaze shifted to Zhang Li. He looked her up and down, a hint of approval entering his tone. "A Logia-type awakener..."
"To have the patience to remain undercover in Lanjiang for so long... the organization values you highly."
"Do well. There will be more important tasks for you later."
"Your wish will be granted."
Zhang Li raised her head sharply, a flash of ecstasy in her eyes. She quickly lowered her head again, her voice trembling with excitement. "Th-Thank you, Lord Magician!"
"This subordinate will do her utmost not to disappoint the organization's trust!"
"Continue." The Magician withdrew his gaze and looked back at Rose, his tone returning to its flat state.
Rose continued, "Later, we verified this through our moles inside the Alliance. We confirmed that a beast is suppressed under the tower—at least of the Eighth Order."
"Furthermore, the energy of the rune array has been weakening over the past few years."
Rose straightened up, her speech speeding up slightly, a fanatic glint in her eyes. "I want to summon the Higanbana—the Spider Lily—right here."
"To tell the world that the Bloody Carnation has taken the stage!"
The Magician nodded after listening. He took a black badge from his briefcase. Engraved on the badge was a blood-red carnation.
"Take this. Crush it at the critical moment, and it will mobilize all of the organization's manpower in the Capital."
"The operation begins at midnight. Don't screw it up."
"Yes! Understood!" Rose accepted the badge with both hands, clutching it tightly, her tone firm.
The Magician said nothing more. He turned and walked away, his figure quickly disappearing into the shadows, leaving only a faint instruction behind:
"Remember. The Spider Lily must not wilt in its first battle."
Zhang Li and the others didn't dare straighten up until the footsteps had completely faded. Zhang Li looked at the badge in Rose's hand, her eyes full of envy.
Rose put away the badge and looked down at the Capital once more, her tone icy. "Tonight, let this 'Beast-Free Zone' become a paradise for the Spider Lily."
Meanwhile.
In the courtyard of the Ling family estate, the atmosphere was lively.
Gu Yunxi squatted by the pond, holding a small piece of bread. She carefully fed the koi in the water, letting out the occasional gasp of amazement. "Look at that gold one! It's huge! It's bigger than any fish I've seen in Lanjiang!"
"I wonder if it tastes good..."
Shen Lie had assumed a stance next to the rockery, punching the artificial mountain one blow after another. His fists made dull thud-thud sounds against the stone.
He shouted while punching, "Chen Yu! Look at my Armament Haki! Is it thicker than last time? By the time this break is over, I'll definitely be able to exchange a couple of moves with you!"
Zhuge Jing pushed up his glasses. He was squatting next to a robot, looking up information on his phone while clicking his tongue in wonder. "Sister Yue, is this the legendary Android?!"
"Didn't they say it was still in the research phase? Holy sh*t... look at these lines..."
Bai Han was leaning against a pillar in the pavilion, his head tilted to the side, eyes nearly closed, mumbling, "So sleepy..."
Ling Yue sat in the pavilion, holding a glass of juice which she handed to Chen Yu. "What did my dad talk to you about?"
Chen Yu took the juice and laughed. "Hahaha, Uncle Ling thinks I'm the pig rooting up his prize cabbage."
Ling Yue's face flushed red. "Don't listen to his nonsense..."
Before she could finish her sentence, the tranquility of the Capital's night sky was shattered by a piercing alarm.
"Level 1 Danger Event! Civilians, please evacuate to underground shelters immediately in an orderly fashion!"
