Chapter 37 - Chapter 36: Flame-Freezing Charm

"Hagrid, you should be able to make bookshelves, right? My dorm room desk is missing a bookshelf." After his initial frustration, he remembered another purpose of his.

"Of course, what kind do you want?" Hagrid waved his hand generously: "I'm very good at making these kinds of small things. Look at these pieces of furniture, I made them all myself."

"That's wonderful!" Ethan Jones exclaimed with delight. He took out a piece of parchment and roughly sketched a design: "This is roughly it."

After reviewing the blueprints, Hagrid declared it a piece of cake: "Give me three days, and I'll go to the Forbidden Forest and select some suitable wood to make one for you. What do you think of cedar?"

"I don't know much about wood, as long as it's durable, that's fine. Also, could you help me buy some portable fire bottles? I plan to use them to provide fire for Little Black when I keep him in my dorm."

"Sure, I'll bring some back for you when I go to Hogsmeade," Hagrid said, making a grand promise.

Having finished everything, Ethan Jones prepared to leave, but just as he reached the door, he suddenly remembered something and turned back, saying:

"Hagrid, could you please make an extra bookshelf? I'm planning to give it to Hermione; I think she'll need one too."

"Of course, no problem."

"Thank you very much, Hagrid."

After he left, Hagrid muttered to himself, "Hermione? A girl? If Ethan and Hermione can use it, then Harry might need it too. Since we're going to make it anyway, let's make four, and make one for Harry's friend too."

Hagrid stared at the little black dog, who was still lying in the fireplace, for a while. He fed the dog, who was sticking out its tongue from the heat, some food that it didn't really want to eat, and then went out into the Forbidden Forest to find suitable trees.

After returning to the castle for lunch, Ethan Jones went to the library with Hermione to study. He planned to give her the bookshelf as a surprise gift after Hagrid finished making it.

"Try it, Hagrid's Rock Cake." In the library, Ethan Jones took the opportunity to pull out a Rock Cake that was as hard as a rock and secretly stuffed it into Hermione's mouth, wanting to see her struggle to bite into it.

Hermione glared at him, stuffed the Rock Cake into her bag, and showed no intention of eating it, dashing his hopes.

Mrs. Pince walked past them, glancing at him several times, and Ethan Jones immediately became quiet.

Suddenly, he stood up abruptly and walked towards Mrs. Pince: "Mrs. Pince, do you have any fire-related spells in the general library section?"

Yes, it was only when he saw Mrs. Pince walk by that he suddenly realized that as the librarian, she was the one who knew the collection best. He was foolish to leave such a living encyclopedia unused and try to find the right spell on his own.

"First year, fire magic is not something you should be learning right now." Looking at Ethan Jones's youthful face, Mrs. Pince flatly refused his request.

"Madam, please, Professor Flitwick said I might have some talent in fire magic, but I don't know any fire magic spells right now."

"I want to learn a fire spell to test if I really have the talent. Please help me." He clasped his hands together and pleaded again with a sincere tone.

Mrs. Pince stared at him for a long time, trying to find a clue in his expression.

But Ethan Jones was telling the truth. Although there was a slight concealment, it was insignificant, so Ethan Jones wasn't worried about it at all. His expression remained sincere, without a trace of falsehood.

After a long while, Mrs. Pince, who judged that he was probably not lying, finally spoke:

"On the right, on the third row of bookshelf number fifteen, there is The Complete Book of Common Household Spells, and on the second row of bookshelf number twenty-three, there is Common Travel Spells."

"Thank you!" Ethan Jones smiled, expressed his sincere gratitude again, and took the two not-so-new books off the shelf.

Judging from the covers alone, these two books do not show much signs of use. The reason they look somewhat worn is simply because they were published a long time ago.

He blew off the dust and quickly started searching through the index.

Finally, he found the spell commonly used by housewives in The Complete Book of Common Household Spells—the Incendio spell, and then found an advanced spell in Common Travel Spells—the Flame-Freezing Charm.

He was overjoyed and quickly copied down the two incantations, carefully studying their pronunciation, spell-casting actions, and other details.

Not only that, he winked at Hermione and wrote on the parchment, asking her to copy down the two spells as well.

Hermione had her own plans, but unable to resist Ethan Jones's constant pleading, she took his parchment and copied it down as well.

Ethan Jones was delighted that she had agreed to his request, so he wrote on the parchment: "After dinner, let's go to the lake to practice these two spells. Professor Flitwick said I have a talent for fire magic, and I want to see if it's true."

Upon seeing Ethan Jones write such words, Hermione's curiosity and competitive spirit were aroused. She paused what she was doing and began to concentrate on studying the two spells.

When it was time for dinner, Ethan Jones had studied the two spells many times and felt he knew them by heart. He put the two books back on the shelf, noted their location, and planned to read these two uncommon books again when he had time.

He couldn't wait to test whether he could cast those two spells. He grabbed some food haphazardly, ate it quickly, and ran to the Gryffindor table, staring intently at Hermione without saying a word.

"You!" Hermione, who was eating slowly and leisurely, felt her face burning up when she was stared at like that and looked at strangely by others.

Hermione, who wasn't thick-skinned enough, had previously allowed Ethan Jones to return to the Slytherin table for dinner because she couldn't stand the way others looked at her.

Now, for the same reason, she lowered her head and whispered to Ethan Jones, "You go to Black Lake first, I'll be there in three minutes, okay?"

"Okay, you absolutely can't be late!" Knowing that it was a bit much to ask Hermione to be as indifferent to other people's opinions as he was, Ethan Jones went ahead first.

These were agonizing minutes. Ethan Jones stood by the Black Lake, suppressing his urge to unleash magic right now, immediately, and instantly, anxiously awaiting Hermione's arrival.

He gazed longingly, his eyes fixed on the castle gate.

After Hermione left the castle, she saw a figure by the lake waving in her direction and jumping around. Upon closer inspection, she realized it was none other than Ethan Jones.

She couldn't help but quicken her pace, and the agreed three minutes were shortened to about two and a half minutes.
